Herbivore

I normally love this place because it has a great variety of gluten free vegan options and the food is usually good. However, customer service is lacking. Marinara and alfredo sauce are not, in fact, the same thing (unlike what I was told on the phone today). The young lady answering the phone this evening was not at all knowledgeable about the menu. In the grand scheme of things, it’s not the end of the world, and I’ll continue to order from here often… I just really hate marinara.

Good service, tasty tasty food, and a huge menu. I’ve so far visited twice (2 consecutive days — hey I’m visiting!) had the savoury crepes, and the breakfast burrito, both delicious. I’m going to go back to try the ramen soup. Must try if in San Fran.

I love love LOVE their coconut soup!
The broth is simply delicious! Normally it comes with tofu, carrots, mushrooms and kale, but I’m deducting a star because I’ve had some surprise ingredients in the soup at times I didn’t really care for. It’s nice of them to replace an ingredient with another if they’ve run out, but I wish they would mention it upon ordering.
Anyway, still good and I’ll keep ordering.
I have also tried their vegan Caesar salad and vegan meatball sandwich and both were very good as well.

Wa wa woo wa doesn’t get better than this. Best meal I had in SF on my 2015 trip.
Of course my waitress is the cutest cutie pie of all time. And that smoothie with soy milk hit my G spot. That smoothie «be hittin’ all the spots that you ain’t even know was there.»
Then I get some dank green salad. It ended me. Vegans rejoice for this spot.

A little disappointed. Price increased, quality slightly decreased. I ordered a philly cheesesteak with rosemary potatoes. I was craving warm carby goodness. Although the fake beef and veggies inside the sandwhich was pretty tasty, I personally found the vegan cheez on the philly to have an off putting taste-​I would pass on this next time. The rosemary potatoes were the biggest disappointment, because fried potatoes are pretty hard to screw up, and sadly, half of the potatoes were burnt, with half of those to the point of being inedible. Bleh. I have to say though, the ketchup was the best I’ve ever tasted, but alas, ketchup does not a meal make.

Herbivore is my most favorite vegetarian/​vegan place to eat at in San Francisco!
I came here about a week ago on a double date, and as usual, I got the cheese steak sandwich. And I added on the soup of the day which was cream of broccoli soup. YUM! Eventually I’d like to try more stuff, but my boyfriend and I both love getting the cheese steak, so we refuse to do the cute «halfsies» things couples do.
All in all, great place to eat at. And service seemed great. At least our waitress was super nice. She even took our picture for us!
I will definitely be returning here on my next day off!

Walked over to this little restaurant from my B&B in the Mission District for a quick bite to eat. It was a very casual place and seemed pretty popular.
I wanted to try the phillo dough pie but they were out of it so I went with the banh mi sandwich. It was supposed to come on french bread but arrived on focaccia which ended up being a little soggy on the bottom. However, it still tasted pretty good.
I was sitting near the front door and a homeless man walked in and served himself some water from the jug and glasses sitting on the front counter without anyone noticing so my OCD kind of kicked in at that point, but maybe he was a regular :-)
If I lived close, I’d probably give it another try as there were some interesting things on the menu.

nicht sehr hübsch, aber freundliches personal (müssen sie ja auch wenn sie trinkgeld wollen) und unsere salate waren großzügig und absolut lecker!

Small, overpriced portions leave a hole in your wallet and your stomach.
Ordered the pesto tofu scramble for nearly $ 12. It came with about ¹⁄₃ cup of scramble and maybe ¹⁄₃ of a regular sized potato’s worth of home fries, leaving me hungry enough for a whole other order.
Avoid stingy restaurants like this when you have plenty of choices.

I feel so sad, I used to really like this place. So, we went tonight 10÷27÷15, the place was a ghost town. I ordered a quesadilla and my friend got pesto pasta. I took a bite of the quesadilla and spit it out. It tasted like slime and glue. My friends pesto was very bitter but edible. I changed the gross quesadilla for a salad and it came soggy and drenched in sauce. This is a vegan restaurant that can’t even make a good salad. I get the impression that the cooks don’t know what they’re doing, don’t actually eat the food themselves and are throwing things together blindly with no regard to food presentation.
I’ll never go back. There is no way they’ll stay in business with so little traffic and so many good options on Valencia.

Good: Great concept and good food.
Bad: Terrible staff and mediocre inventory management. One night they were out of beets, sprig roll wraps, and mushrooms.
Whaaaaaaat? You serious? (They were. How embarrassing.)
Staff needs to be purged for higher quality/​friendlier/​attentive/​whatever people.
Great concept, hence the stars, though I would never give my recommendation until every facet of the business is upgraded.

First time eating at this location and it was nice how we were able to seat ourselves and immediately were greeted by a waitress with our water. We didn’t have to wait a long time for our food, even though it was pretty busy.
I ordered the breakfast crêpe filled with spinach and mushrooms and what not, topped with pesto sauce (sauce of your choice) and a side of potatoes. I wasn’t crazy about the potatoes but boy am I craving the crêpe! I highly recommend it! Their tofu scramble was also delicious, and not plain how I imagined it would be!
The waitress kept filling our glass of water without us asking, which was nice. The only downfall is that they only had one restroom for both genders, which you can’t complain since the location is rather small.

I came here for brunch after my epic failure to get a seat at Foreign Cinema… which is a common theme in my life as a San Franciscan. It looked nice and they had seating available, I didn’t even realize it was a vegan place.
For food, we got the southwestern scramble, and the green salad. Let me just say that the presentation is really good and the colors are very appetizing. For a vegan place, the food is pretty yummy. A little salty at times, but it’s pretty healthy if you watch what you order. What I like best was the clear coffee mugs which was nice.
My only complaint is the service. It took 15 – 20 minutes for them to take our order which was disappointing, but they prepped the meals pretty quite fast.
Again, not a destination place for brunch, but if it’s a last resort, you won’t regret it.

Let me first add that I have been coming here for 6+ years… today I called in an order: «One cheesesteak sandwich please» when I arrive I hand over my card to pay then I receive a signature receipt for $ 26.92. «Uh, sandwiches are $ 8.25» I told server Karla. She immediately snapped and said: «YOU SAID YOU WANTED THREE!» I told her clearly I wanted *one* I always come here and order *one*— then she explains in a rude manner that it will take over a day to resolve this and that Francisco; a manager, will call me about it. I am so unhappy about the way I was treated today I doubt I will be coming back. You can get a super awesome vegan sandwich at Ike’s for the same price and you are treated with respect. Very disappointed, we have very few vegan places in town as it is, this is no way to treat a loyal customer. Goodbye Herbivore!

Vegetarian paradise.
I got the avocado/​mushroom sandwich and it was extremely tasty.
Interior is cute, nice seating area outside in the back.
Minus one star because the waitress was a liiiiitle surly.

With a name like herbivore, you’d think this place would have awesome salads. Think again! I ordered a simple green salad and it came to me missing several of the things that were listed in the menu like garbanzo beans, carrots, even the most simple salad ingredients.
And to top it all off, the salad was green and slimy. GROSS! Not coming back here again.
Also, the music that the kitchen was being played in the kitchen was full of really annoying ads blaring throughout the restaurant.
When I went to sit outside there was a swarm of flies in the patio.
I love the Herbivore in Berkeley, please help this restaurant be better. I’m never coming here again.

This menu truly has something for every appetite ranging from soups, salad, noodles, pizza, sandwiches, burgers, wraps, and fresh juice. The food portions were just perfect, and the menu was surprisingly affordable! The spicy rice noodles were tasty, but I felt as if I were simply eating spaghetti and tangy marinara sauce. There was very little spice, and hardly any vegetables, mostly all sauce and noodles. The pad thai had an overwhelmingly creamy peanut sauce. It was almost a peanut yogurt consistency. To be fair, upon ordering the waitress warned that it was not the traditional pad thai. A friend ordered the garden salad, which was very large, but had hardly any dressing. When asking for a little more, we were charged extra!
I love that they offer such a diverse menu, but the food was not enough to bring me back a 2^nd time.

It’s been almost a year since our last review and we decided to give Herbivore another chance.
It is unbelievable to us that Jayner is still employed after all this time. Who is he is related to or servicing that is connected with Herbivore? The kid is so disinterested in providing any type of service other than that which he provides to either the owner or the manager that keeps him employed.
Great food, but never going back again because of Jayner. Seriously, we are not letting any more of our money contribute to his wages.

This is my first time at this location, though I’ve been to the one in Berkeley.
Herbivore touts a very large, diverse variety of food-​100% vegan!
They use Daiya Cheese, and Gardein Products, which is always a win in my book!
This time around, I tried the Basil Pesto Ravioli and the Phyllo Dough Pie.
Entrees come with a side salad, which when tossed in their Dijon Dressing, is actually really delicious! The Basil Pesto for me left something to be desired. I think their sauce is lacking an important component that makes it ‘Pesto.’ I think either a lack of seasoning or ‘Cheese’ flavor did it. The ravioli itself though was quite good. It was filled with dark leafy greens, such as spinach, and other vegetables. It comes with some garlic bread, which gives the meal that complete hearty ‘Italian’ comfort.
The winner, however, was the Phyllo Dough Pie! I’ve never eaten one before, and to be honest, could not begin to describe exactly WHAT Phyllo Dough Pie is or what it really is suppose to taste like. It’s just not something I’m familiar with and it really is a foreign food to me. But I took a chance and I’m glad I did! It had a super flaky, crispy crust, and it was served with a Roasted Red Pepper Sauce that was soo delicious! It was piping hot and would ooze out marinara, tofu ‘ricotta’ and daiya cheese that just melted in your mouth. Mmmmm… it’s like a flaky crispy lasagna. It’s also served with a bit of steamed kale on the side to give it a freshness or flavor.
Overall, it’s a cute store, with minimal décor. There’s like 3 tables out back in the patio, and one in front. Service is hit or miss-​very minimal and don’t expect much interaction, despite the fact that there weren’t many people there. Prices are pretty good, for the fact that they use quality ingredients and have big portions.
