We need MORE of this! MORE of them — they are the top improvisors in SF. They build a story & characters & lively feelings from scratch. The cast pulls you through waves of giddy, pathos, tenderness, laughter, surprise, and forward to edgy anticipation. Extraordinarily good actors and story tellers combined with a fullsome humor. And they love playing with one another — radiating joy when they move the action forward. Now, they need a home base!

They make up characters on the spot, and the characters feel real. They can switch in a moment from a hipster to an elderly person to a child to a foreign language speaker to an alien to an engineer to a celebrity, with perfect body language and voice each time. The humor comes from realistic situations, not from jokes or word games. It’s especially funny when they put each other on the spot (Here’s my poem: why don’t you read it.), and put comments about improvising into the characters mouths. Best of all, it’s never mean-spirited, or slapstick or predictable. That is hard to find, so I’m thrilled to always find it at Improv Playhouse and BATS.

I admit, I’m kind of an improv snob. I’ve performed and studied it for many years, and as a result, when I watch improv, I’m usually do more analyzing than sitting back and enjoying. These players are the crème de la crème of improv in a city that has a lot of it. Lisa Rowland, Regina Saisi, Ben Johnson, Tim Orr, and Rafe Chase are among the most dynamic improv performers in the state (the nation?) let alone our fine city by the bay.
If you’re looking for gags, watch a Whose Line Is It Anyway rerun. If you’re looking to see great acting and watch an amazing narrative unfold in real time, AND have a fantastic time, go to an Improv Playhouse show! You won’t be disappointed.

Wow! No, WOW!!! What an incredible show! The talent, chemistry and execution of this troupe of improv professionals is unparalleled. I was taken on an incredible journey hitting all the major human emotions including roll over laughter and all done on the fly! Truly amazing to watch the characters unfold and develop in real time and with no script! Each member of this troupe is a true superstar! You do not want to miss this show! Absolutely fantastic!
