The Metal Works beginners class I took with Emma was really fantastic. It was my first time working with metal for jewelry making and it was so eye-opening and informative. I liked the small class environment for in-depth learning. I hope to sign up for a future class again, it’s well worth it and opens up your creative soul!

Inventive and fabulous!, this artists’ pedigree goes back to the Beat Generation to the current Modernist movements, every piece is one of a kind. It’s a family owned studio where you can learn and, or be involved in the creation of your own piece. I treasure every piece I own.

Dan made our wedding rings. He worked with us to merge material from family rings into forms that blended the river of life theme with the material and ideas we presented. He was a careful listener, a gifted and innovative designer. The results surpassed our hopes. The rings are treasures. Unique pieces of art that are worn. We received many, many compliments on them.

Modern art jewelry with a San Franciscan Aesthetic. Daniel Macchiarini is both artist and shopkeeper, and an absolutely lovely person too! We happened on the shop on a walk around North Beach and were delighted to find the perfect and unique artisan crafted, high quality wedding band.(We bought the ring.) The artists have a nice selection in the fun shop, and make custom pieces as well. Support our artists and independent shopkeepers, and go see Macchiarini Creative Design.

I went to Dan for an engagement ring based on the positive reviews here, and I was thrilled with the results. Dan listened carefully to my input, and throughout the process was enthusiastic and thoughtful. The result is absolutely stunning… yellow gold and spiral-cut tourmaline, entirely mined in California, hand-made and simply gorgeous. I wanted a ring that felt personal, not something made by a machine using overpriced stones from questionable sources. What I got was a piece of true artwork and craftsmanship. Best of all, she said yes! I’ve posted a photo of the result, not sure how to include it with my review:

I just dropped in quickly to get a ring sized and Dan was really helpful. It was 10 $ and 10 minutes. Thank You!

I went here for my wedding ring because they were just about the only place in the bay willing /able to work with wood, plus it’s a really neat looking shop. I gave them a drawing and they worked with me to make a ring similar to my design. Although the first one wasn’t quite on the mark, mainly because of a miscommunication, I think, with the lapidary, they started over and made me a new ring. I ended up with a pretty, hand-crafted wood, tourmaline & silver ring, that included natural elements that were important to me. You can see the picture of it in the photos section.

Although I’ve considered posting reviews on Unilocal before, I have never felt compelled to shout from the rooftops about how marvelous a buying experience was until now. My fiancé spotted Macchiarini’s –a treasure of a shop in North Beach – while strolling down Grant Street. We had been on the hunt for a jewelry shop to custom make our wedding rings for quite some time. Macchiarini’s turned out to be the perfect place. We do not consider ourselves«modernists» but Dan, the owner of the shop and creator of a huge and impressive collection of modernist jewelry, didn’t mind. He listened to our ideas about the kind of rings we wanted and worked with us until we had exactly what we wanted. He also gave us a great price(half of what another shop in NB wanted to charge us). Not only are the rings gorgeous, but we also have a whole video and snapshots of our participation in the ring making process! Dan took us through the whole procedure – choosing the metals and stones, modifying the wax molds, «pouring» the rings, putting the melted metal in the centrifuge, buffing them out, EVERYTHING! There is no way we would have received this kind of unique experience anywhere else. How many couples can say that they poured their own wedding rings? And they were cast in the same mold, a nice symbol of our future together! Dan seriously made this experience amazing. Five stars is not enough!
