Okay, so I have to practically do the jitterbug to stay out of peoples’ way. So, I’m treated(mostly) like a second class citizen as a non-Asian person. Don’t mind the person selling phone cards, just politely jostle by, issue a smile if necessary. It’s true, you may get bumped or shoved or barked at, but in fairness, that is their culture and they may very well do similar to one another. But you know what? It’s a nice store. I like their produce, if I weren’t fixated on buying more organic I’d get more here; they’re produce like green bell peppers and nappa cabbage always look exquisite! Ripe, large, clean. They are also likely to have a harder to find item, on a day when I really needed a yamaimo(or Mountain) potato — I don’t know what Chinese people call it, only Japanese — I was glad to find it and I wish I’d had the few extra bucks to try the more exotic fruits that piqued my curiosity. I often find a unique item in their store and sometimes they have exotic produce before the other stores have caught on. And that’s just the inside, I rarely poke around the HUGE bins of produce on the outside of the store. I’m very interested in other cultures and don’t mean harm. I recognize that non-Asians may not adjust well or even behave rude or ignorantly themselves, I honestly try hard not to add to that reputation! They keep a selection of cold items too(tofu, soy milk, regular dairy, meats) and that’s always well stocked with basics. Then the shelves are littered with another small selection of basics(ramen, canned mushrooms, powdered goods, coconut milk, etc), a few of which I have a tendency to fall in love with and then come back for more, patiently waiting in line behind people with a lot more produce or who blatantly cut in front(if you’re an old lady I will forgive you, but otherwise… hey!). I’ve been rung up many times by cashiers who didn’t speak English, but I don’t mind and they were very friendly, plus I pay in cash. When too many had cut in front of me one day, another Chinese woman spoke up in Cantonese on my behalf, so it’s not all bad or like everyone is looking to shun you for not being Chinese. Just be bold. For the sake of food, I always manage it! I also like the Vietnamese food they sell in one corner, tasty stuff, FRESHLYMADE, very affordable, and the women whom I’ve spoken with are always affable and fluent in English at the café area. They were kind enough to excuse me for asking if they had dairy in certain dishes because I’m lactose intolerant. They have a cute set up with tall chairs and little tables, you can even watch Asian cable television — it’s a nice respite and break from your day-to-day. It’s true, you may get bumped or shoved or barked at, but in fairness, that is their culture and they may very well do similar to one another. Consider it an adventure!

This Asian Grocery Store is very rude. They sell produces but also lease out the front corner of the store to sell phone cards and another part inside the store to sell meat products. There’s an employee outside the store where the produce stand is and she’s yelling at people to buy or leave. Then she will invade your safe space and loom over you while you are looking at the produces. I’m a fast decisive shopper and she was yelling at me while I was trying to pick out 4 – 5 bags of avocadoes in a fruit bin. Of course it was hard for me to hold so many bags and there weren’t any shopping baskets so I places 2 of the bags on the top shelf while I grabbed 3 more bags and she was yelling at me to hurry up and make a purchase or get out of her way. My mom was at the other side picking out other fruits so we could make this a speedy shopping trip. Needless to say, after yelling at me 5 times… I decided not to make any purchases and told her it was due to her rude attitude. She continued to yell at me as I was leaving to cross the street. It was embarrassing so I went back into the store to ask for a manager or the store owner and they were just as rude as her. I DONOT recommend going to this store. In fact, due everything you can to avoid it. I thought I was saving time to shop at a small local store and avoid lines at the big stores since it was 5pm but next time, I’ll just shop at Safeway with all the other people getting off work. The owner of the store told the employee to stop yelling at the customers and the employee wouldn’t stop. She was like a mad dog. Think of Old Yellow on rabies. She was completely CRAZY!!! I am also CHINESE-AMERICAN and I can also speak CANTONESE as the previous person who wrote a review about their BADCUSTOMERSERVICE. It appears to be a pattern with this store that they provide BADCUSTOMERSERVICE to ASIANS!

Wow! I was a bit surprised that they had a miniature Vietnamese restaurant inside this place right next to their miniature Chinese supermarket. Looking into the kitchen area… I was also very surprised on how clean it was… more so clean then the supermarket! Another astounding thing is how huge their menu is! I ordered a grilled pork/shredded pork over rice with egg over rice and a fancy pork /shredded pork on rice rolls. Amazingly… very very good! One of thee best I’ve tried in the city and I never thought it would be from a «supermarket» per say. I will definitely be back and try their other items like their pork rolls and phở… YES…this«supermarket serves phở! WOW!

First, I am not writing about their deli section, I am writing about the store in general. While they do have an assortment of vegetables available for sale, it’s nowhere near as extensive as some other grocery stores in the New Chinatown shopping district on Clement Street. Also, their selection is not as fresh-looking and leaves a lot to be desired. Their main draw, however, seems to be the phone card sales counter, which is right at the entrance to their store. Another thing that really bothers me(and my mother-in-law and my wife) is that their service at the cashier is V-E-R-Y S-L-O-W… They don’t really seem to care that there is a long line queued up and that people are trying to get their shopping done and get home so that they can start dinner. On many occasions, when my mother-in-law has shopped there because she couldn’t find a particular item elsewhere, she had to endure a long wait in line. Every time I pick her up or when she returns from her shopping spree in New Chinatown, I often hear her complain about the wait. The same goes for my wife. When she’s gone there, it’s because she was looking for a particular item that she could only find there(or, rather, it was something that she liked, but didn’t find an equivalent elsewhere). Her comment was that the cashier was not only an old person, she was very slow and didn’t seem to care. There was one person who did the restocking, and that person was also an older person who struggled to keep up with the customers’s demands. A man who stood by and didn’t do anything to lift a finger to help was apparently the owner(from what she surmised). The bottom line is: If you’re in a hurry, want something fresh, want wider variety, want decent customer service, THENDON’T GOHERE! Those are qualities that are severely lacking at this place and has few redeeming qualities. I’ve not eaten from their hot deli, and I’m not impressed with its appearance, either. They don’t have anything that I’d want that I could find elsewhere with more decent quality and customer service. Chinese business-owners like this need to get a clue: YOUNEEDTOLEARNWHATCUSTOMERSERVICEISANDNOTTAKEUSFORGRANTED!!! Having said that, I want anybody who is reading this review to know that I am Chinese-American and I do speak Cantonese, and I am qualified to make this statement. So no hate comments or e-mail or whatnot. I know where I’m not shopping at next time!

They have Vietnamese sandwiches here for about $ 3.25 that are decent. In addition to the grocery/produce.

I found that Asian businesses on Clement St are not represented on Unilocal. In my pioneering review, I want to mention that Vietnamese sandwiches there cost $ 2.95.
