Some friends and I came to this restaurant for some late night pie. Although we arrived a full hour before the closing time, our server was observably less than enthused to see us. She was unhelpful and extremely cold during the course of our ordering process. Our pies weren’t terrible, but certainly were not worth the $ 5.50 price point. Whenever I asked the server what her favorite pie was, to get an idea of what was most popular, she informed me that she is gluten intolerant and therefore doesn’t eat the pies. Rude staff, below average food, and expensive. But… I didn’t see any rats, so two stars.

Food is average at best. The workers are untrained and sometimes, like today, total assholes

Paid 20 $ for an orange juice and the chicken bites. Unfortunately the orange juice was the only thing that I was able to consume. The chicken was not cooked all the way. I immediately checked when the first bite I took was like chewing on gum. The chicken meat was pink and very undercooked. I tried eating other pieces but nothing got better. I don’t usually leave reviews but I had to because I was definitely feeling sick from the couple of bites i took. if you do plan to give this establishment a try, please check before leaving that your food is all the way cooked. I ordered to go so I had to just throw my food away):

We walked at 7:45 and they had a sign stating they wouldn’t start serving food again until 8:30p. The girl behind the counter reluctantly took our order and rushed us. Basically order or no food for you. We should have just left. The girl who took our order was cleaning then grabbed our food to bring it over. Did not wash her hands. Disgusting. The Mac and cheese was only supposed to be sharp cheddar yet it had a blue cheese after taste? Mold? We took a few bites of our 30 dollar meal and left the rest. The food was inedible. Living so close I’ve been here a few times and it’s been eh, but tonight put the nail in the coffin. Never again.

I live about 100 feet from Pig & Pie. Really frustrating that they can’t get it together. I just ordered the meatball sandwich with french fries to go to eat at home on a Saturday night while I’m studying. Soggy fries. Small meatball sandwich. Somehow both were cold and stale in the literally 20 second walk to my front door. I’m tempted to go back and ask for a refund. It almost seems like they just threw some shit in a bag because they figured I wouldn’t be back. But I live right next door. I would go here every day if the food was great. You can tell they put some thought into the place. The beer selection looks great. The menu looks great. Why is the meatball sandwich so small? For 11.50, shouldn’t I be full? It’s a meatball sandwich… not a slider. It’s tasty. The recipe is good. But what’s up with the portion sizes? Why are the fries so bad? Fries are easy. Why not make them great?! I understand rent is expensive but if you worry so much about your margins, people aren’t going to come. And if they do come, they aren’t going to return. I’ve been here a dozen times over the last year or so but I think this is going to be my last.

Be very careful ordering anything to go from this place. My girlfriend and I were actually looking forward to trying this place and it was a huge disappointment. To start, the sauces provided had significant amounts of MOLD growing inside. Next, the fried chicken was nothing special, I’ve had better at KFC. Also, the chicken wings were terrible, we threw them out. And lastly, the fries were completely soft. Moreover, one could tell that all of the people working there clearly did not want to be there. Won’t be back ever.

I like this place for the warmth & late night eating. And the pie is divine! And I like Casey, owners brother, he’s a great asset. Only thing I haven’t completely enjoyed was the poutine. I’m Canadian and I’m having a hard loving the way it’s made. Good curds though.

DONOTORDER to bring you a burger from this joint. Either the kobe burger was made too quickly(the meat was still alive) or their courier service for the delivery was slow. The buttermilk chicken salad was also, wait for it… SOGGY!!! Either way I will never waste that much money on a soggy burger(even if it was free). I have had so many great things from this restaurant that it saddens me to have this experience. Four stars for the sweets options, 3 stars for the soggy food.

Time: 2:27pm/56°F cloudy Purpose: A written proposal for a nearby business needed to be sign. It’s been a while since I’ve been back. I mostly just buy pie slices and nothing else, but Mission Pie got me tied up. Never had a formal sit down meal here till today. Ambiance: Place has wood paneling here and there for the most part. It feels like old school nostalgic setting. Couple of high communal table with plush stool. Rest of place sit about 35+ surrounding with old school vintage decorations. Counter area showcase pie of whole/slice and vintage condiment tins from way back, and some pickled jar veggies. A storage bin fill with toys for families with kids. Wooden crate storing vinyl are actually for sale. Nothing really stood out as far as décor goes. Just hipster eatery playing music like Nina Kraviz and alike. Not sure about first date for this place. However, it can be great if both people are in to this type of atmosphere. Staff: Solo girl up front does multiple duties of cashier, host, server. Didn’t seem to be happy with current job position. Facial expressions tells me otherwise. My whole transaction with her probably less than 15 words in total. Dropping off my order without a word proceed to walk away. At that point, I didn’t bother with her. Quick look and my order is complete exactly what I had order. Not sure if bf break up or something bothering her at the time, but show some decency. You’re check comes from paying customers. Cleanliness: Grade B, table top had oily film residues. Utility cart against wall with tubs of dried dishes emitting food waste smell. Not exactly what I had in mind, or want to see when hangry. Look like it was left over from lunch time judging by the patrons at the time. Pretty stack up and full. Eats/Drinks: Original dog $ 5/add $ 2 for combo deal w/side soup of day black bean. Soup had a good spicy and hearty taste on first spoonful. Black beans smashed with sediments floating on top. You’ll definitely get your fiber needs for the day with this bowl. Hot dog was good especially with toasted buns. Hate that feeling with cold bun that split apart in middle while stuffing with fixings. Didn’t happen here and bun slightly toasted to perfection. Had a choice of two free toppings, so I went with grilled onion and sauerkraut. Dog was cold or luke warm, it was tongue juggling hot. Scalding my upper roof of mouth. Juicy and plump bite after bite a burst of natural juice oozing out. What caught me by surprise is the presentation of dog. Where other fail miserably, but P&P manage to get it perfect. This dog had volume and it shows. Main Features: Kobe burger, English breakfast, brunch. Products/Services: Pies/à la mode, house made lemonade, bottled/tap beer, beer drink, beer float, assorted can/bottle soda, sides/salads, plates, on a bun, bratwurst, poutine, banh mi, brunch, vintage vinyls($ 100+ qualify for 20% off), takes plastic(no minimum). Punch Lines: Old school décor, wood paneling, décor leaves something to desired, pleasing flavors, drool-worthy, special bargain, always buzzing, budget-watchers, imaginable toppings, laid back, well-prepared, kids friendly, light bites, lively atmosphere, can’t go wrong, nothing out of the ordinary, interesting takes, more than adequate, kept it standards. Tradeoffs: A step above average places of American diner with a hipster vibe. Décor makes you feel value wise. You’re coming for both food and ambiance any more forget about it. Final Thoughts: Old school retro feel to make you feel somewhat of reliving the past. In reality P&P offers traditional American eats long with some not so tradtional in a hipster joint. Without wooden paneling and vintage decorations, its as plain as a fast food joint. However, the pies are no cheapo, its made from scratch with each pie looking apart from the rest. Just not sure if its made in house or deliver by local bakery(mission pie)? Bottom line, a good deal to be had if you don’t mind

Came for lunch. Ordered the pork and veal meatballs, mac and cheese, and roasted cauliflower. I thoroughly enjoyed all my food — in particular the mac and cheese and meatballs(cauliflower was only okay, I’ve had better roasted cauliflower elsewhere). I normally actually don’t like meatballs so this is a pretty big deal. I think the secret is that because it is a blend of pork(higher fatty content) and veal(very tender) the meatball itself comes out to be succulent and juicy compared to other meatball counter parts. Service is really so-so. Nothing stands out in particular. You bus your own table. Definitely need to come back and try out the pies to see how it is!

Perfect place to grab a beer or slice of pie. The employees were very friendly and the pie was selfish. They had 5 different kinds, so of course my friend and I got two to share, a slice of butterscotch and a slice of the honey quince. I liked the quince better – perfect crust, not overly sweet, tender fruit – while my friend liked the butterscotch, which was a little too sweet for me. They have a good beer selection too, about 20 local taps. Not sure how the other food is, but I would definitely come back if I had a sweets craving!

Who knew it could be so hard to find dessert in the Mission on a Monday night? Mission Pie was closed. Humphry Slocombe just happened to be closed early that specific night. The closest dessert spot on Unilocal was Pig & Pie across the street, so we decided to try it out. It’s definitely more of a savory spot than a dessert place in my opinion. The pie selection was limited to just butterscotch, chocolate bottom oatmeal, sweet potato with marshmallows and honey poached quince. $ 5 for a slice of pie, extra $ 2 for a scoop of ice cream. We got a slice of the BUTTERSCOTCHPIE($ 5 — 2⁄5), which ended up being way too sweet. In retrospect, we probably should’ve expected that. It definitely needed a thicker crust to help balance out the massive amount of butterscotch filling. Unfortunately the crust was incredibly thin, but the whipped cream helped a little. Milk or tea(or even water) would definitely help with the sugar overdose too. The filling at least was more of a pudding texture rather than thick and sticky like normal butterscotch. We also got a CHOCOLATECHIPCOOKIE($ 2 — 2⁄5), which was just okay at best. It was a decently sized cookie, but definitely not worth the $ 2. The texture was kind of on the old/stale side. Honestly, I don’t think I’d be back again. Maybe for their normal food, but not for their pies.

Great food! A really comfortable and welcoming atmosphere. We came here on «Family Night» and really enjoyed the community vibe. The food was great. We had the fried chicken salad, the pork shoulder, and the Mac-n-cheese and all were excellent. I also thought the beer selection had a really nice variety. I especially appreciated the fact that you could get a full or a half pint of beer. the food was very«parent friendly», in other words I could easily eat my dinner with one hand while holding my baby in the other.

Had some time to kill before a bread making class across the street at the La Victoria so stopped in for a quick pregame. Inside it’s a little rustic, wasn’t too busy, and had plenty of seating. I’d say it’s good for groups. Had this local saison to go along with a slice of WHITENECTARINEPIE. The pie was pretty good, good crust, good fruit, cool unique flavor. It just missed that WOW factor. A solid 3.5 star pie. Maybe if they gave a little bigger slice or topped it with some homemade whip cream or even paired it al a mode with Humphrey slocombe ice cream? Yes please! For having the word PIE in their name, I was surprised there were only about 2 – 3 pie flavors. Couple beers and a slice was under $ 20. I’d probably come back if I was in the area. 3.5 stars.

I think the folks behind Pork & Pie have stolen my idea of a restaurant: homemade comfort food, spiced up with the ancient techniques of preserving foods through fermentation, pickling or canning. Or, maybe they too have read Sally Fallon’s book Nourishing Traditions and are now on a mission to bring people back to the way folks have cooked in the past. Anyways, what they have created here is a warm and hospitable space… or should I say nourishing space? On our visit we ordered the buttermilk fried chicken plate and the all-spice braised pork shoulder. As accompaniments we ordered a side of sautéed greens, the roasted rainbow carrots and the German-style potato salad. Our friends also ordered the Poutine(think animal-style friend à la In & Out Burger). I have to say, the dishes ranked from excellent to ok to not so nice… a bit of an unfortunate hit & miss. For example, I loved the braised pork shoulder and also really liked the buttermilk chicken bites, especially when eating them with their homemade BBQ sauce. On the other hand, the German-style potato salad was not good at all… and as a German I feel I have a right to say that ;-) Nevertheless, I really like the concept of the restaurant as well as the atmosphere. I’m a big fan of homemade food as I grew up in rural Germany where my family made a lot of use of the foods we’d grown in our orchards and vegetable gardens. However, when it comes to the flavoring of the foods, I felt that there’s still room for improvement. But hey… we should always have something to improve upon, right? Note: we came here with our friends who have two kids. They like coming here, especially on Tuesday nights, as then this place becomes a large playground for families. Therefore: if you like it child-free, avoid Tuesday evenings!

The décor is minimal and no-frills. The paint is peeling off the tables and the seating is in need of a little love. There was some art on the walls that was definitely done by kids. I like that touch, but the walls are a greenish grey and a little unwelcoming. The mix of aesthetics is a little strange, they used to have posters with cuts of meat up. Ordering was strange. You can get a sandwich and the sides are $ 2 extra, no biggie, if you are paying attention. The cashier taking the order asked us if we would like fries, soup, or salad with our meal never once mentioning the up charge, she tried to sell it to us as part of the meal when it wasn’t. «Would you like fries with that?» it was not, but rather by framing it as a choice, had my boyfriend convinced they were part of the meal. I told him there was an up-charge for sides and it wasn’t included.(I didn’t mind paying extra but the way it was presented made us feel duped so we didn’t get it.) She asked for a name I said Deedee since my name can be hard to pronounce for some. After the order, I get some water from the pitcher. «Edie?» The waitress says, but not very loudly, we raise our hands and he gets his beer. No biggie. Our food arrives. I got the spinach salad with a pickled egg, a slice of bacon and a sprinkling of pickled onions, a good dish with a lot of strong flavors. Delicious but still feels a bit over-priced at $ 9. He gets an Italian sandwich, but it’s kind of messy so he wants a fork to pick up the bits that fall out. There was only one fork in the basket, so he goes up to the cashier and asks for a fork. She tells him that he’ll have to go to the other tables to look for a fork because she doesn’t have any and she would have to get them out back. So he says ok and then is put in the awkward situation of having to go up to other tables, with patrons at them and look for a fork himself. Half way through the meal the cashier comes up to the table reaches over us while we are eating and throws down silverware into the bucket, no warning, no excuse me just a crash in the middle of the table. And the table is in the middle of the floor so she could have walked around or said excuse me or something, nope. Remember when I said that my meal was strong? It was also salty. So I took a huge gulp of water that tastes terrible: a mix of chemicals and a very strong metallic taste. I make him taste it. He grimaced. I drink water from his glass and it was fine. I think the glass was dirty. We used to go here when they first opened. We liked it when it was more sausage and pie and fewer options. We also liked how it was open late especially since other late night options are mainly burritos. There were even some memorable moments with the owner who seemed genuinely cool. But after this experience we won’t go back. The food is good, but the FOH staff seemed tired and irritated with us, and we are friendly, easygoing people. Which doesn’t make me feel like I want to spend my time and money there.

Disclaimer… I’ve only had pie here. Disclaimer…I was informed that their pies are no longer made by the legendary Esa. Sigh. That was why I came; but I stayed & tried 2 pies anyway. OMG. On this particular Saturday, I’d had Bacon Bacon for breakfast, & I had dinner plans w friends later. But I needed a little something in between. Pie for lunch? With dinner plans later? Why not? It was Saturday after all. This is what the weekends are for. I REALLY planned on just nibbling on the pie. But this pie was friggin amazing. Just friggin A-MAZ-ING. Coconut chess pie. Holy crap. Lemon pie. Same. This pie was so good that I thought I was in the south. It felt like I had been transported to the south via my tastebuds. Serious. The down home very southern south, where they make pie like it’s a religion or something. This pie was amazing. Creamy. Flaky. Perfection. The lemon had some tartness. The coconut was very sweet, possibly a bit too sweet. The portions were not on the generous side. But damn it, they deserve 5 stars anyway. It was that good. I consequently ate too much. Before a big dinner w 7 others… Couldn’t stop. Just a glutton. Have I no shame?! I believe that one of P&P’s pies is SF’s answer to NYC’s Momofuku Milk Bar’s Crack Pie. I really do. It’s just a matter of which flavor. I’ve only tried the 2, but am more than happy to try more. Now I’ll have to. Damn it. 5 stars.
