Plato Hair Design

I moved to San Francisco 5 years ago, and I had no idea where to get my hair cut. While in The Container Store near Union Square, I saw a beautiful haircut on another customer. She sent me to Plato Hair Design, and I made an appointment with Alice. I have been going to Alice ever since.
Aside from Alice’s vivacious and infectious personality (I LOVE her!), she is an architect when it comes to hair. She is a precision haircutter who really understands hair, and an incredible stylist! She has done sleek and clean styles, and more recently more soft and voluminous styles for me — she can do it all!

Linda from Krave moved here and working here every Friday! I rushed to my appointment here just to see her.
The place is smaller and intimate but classy Chinese hair salon and they have white folks too coming here, so it’s a sign that this place is very diverse and non typical Chinese hair salon.

This review is for Plato Huen. He gives the best haircut in San Francisco!
He is talented, creative, friendly, professional, and always gives me the type of haircut that makes everyone notice. I have gotten so many compliments. He knows exactly what will look good, and the end result is AMAZING!!! He really takes his time and listens to what I need done to ensure I leave happy.
The service is pricey, but absolutely worth it. The salon itself is beautiful. The interior was designed well, it feel nice and cozy inside. The products they use are gentle and because they lack the harsh chemical smells of most salon products, the place itself smells great. Plato Hair Design is located Outer Richmond District in San Francisco so there are plenty of street parking available.
I’ve been going to Plato for almost 20 years now and I wouldn’t go to anyone else. I seriously couldn’t be happier with my cut and it is well worth the short commute to see him that’s how satisfied I am. I can’t wait to come back once I grow out my hair.
Overall, I love, love, love this salon and especially if you are like me and have long hair you won’t be disappointed. I highly recommend Plato to anyone who is looking for that WOW haircut.

I’ve got two haircuts from Plato, one was a dramatic, very short haircut, which he did very well. The other was after I grew it out and he layered it. He definitely does more short haircuts, but he does really good long ones as well.
It is an older group of people that go there, usually long term customers. But it doesn’t mean he doesn’t understand trends or styles. You just tell him what you want and he’ll do it, best to match your face shape.
The place is expensive, but since I only get my hair cut once a year, it isn’t a great expense.
After he cut my hair, I won’t let anyone else cut my hair, and I go back to him once a year for a re-​layer and trim. I would highly recommend Plato.

At the recommendation of a friend who’s hair is always elegant-​looking even when we are out walking in windy areas, I went to have my hair highlighted and cut by Alice at Plato Hair Design and was thoroughly delighted with the result.
Alice is that rare combination of artistic, highly-​trained and infectiously warm. She asked enough questions and made some apt suggestions that made feel confident that we were communicating.
Having longish, thick and very straight hair I appreciated her taking the time to make the highlights look so natural, in color and in blending.
And it is always so relaxing to have a head rub when one’s hair is washed, and Alice’s nimble assistant gave me one of the best scalp massages I’ve ever had in a salon. While the place was full, I never felt rushed. Even though I live in Marin, I am coming back here again. The prices were reasonable too.

I had a great cut and style. Plato is an artist. He told me how if he could he’d still cut his hair like I have him cut mine. But hair length isn’t in the cards for him anymore

I was here for a hair perm about a month ago, referred by a friend of mine. The moment I walked in, I saw two hairstylists around late 50 and few senior clients, I was debating if I should leave but I already checked in my appointment. By the time I sat down, I found out that they didn’t have digital perm. The owner Plato described to me about his high technique to perm my hair. Yeah right, very high technique and my perm turned out like the 80’s. At the beginning, the owner Plato was nice to me but after I made a comment about my old fashion looking hair, the owner became sarcastic. I paid $ 180 for a regular perm. Don’t ever try out this place unless you want your hair to look like your grandmother or if you want to get the 80’s look.
I also realized why they only have 6 reviews on Unilocal because most of their clients are senior citizen.

I had a haircut with Plato a few months ago and was happy with it. I have a simple hair style (staight, one-​length) and Plato kept that simple style with a twist of slight layering in front and at the ends all around. My hair grew out really nicely over the months. I would’ve wanted to go back if it wasn’t so pricey. I paid $ 70 but I would hope to pay half of that for cutting my hair. However, for those who can afford, Plato is truly nice, professional and highly skilled. His salon is also clean, comfortable and very pleasant. I would highly recommend this place to those who don’t mind paying more.

Plato and Alice kind of feel like distant relatives of mine — they might as well be because my family and I have been going there for almost 20 years now! Yes, I’ve been going there since i was 4 and Plato is like an uncle I never had. Even after we moved across the bay we still make the trip to have our hair cut and designed by Plato and Alice — that’s how loyal and satisfied we are!
They are both very skillful and professionally trained (check out all the certificates and awards on their wall!) They always do as you request but at the same time they are not afraid to give their own insights when they disagree with your thoughts. Their helper not only washes your hair thoroughly and carefully, but she also massages your head for a brief moment during the relaxing process.
It’s evident that they are both super passionate about their work, and I really respect that. Sure they are pretty pricey, but when it comes to something so personal, I’m willing to splurge for something that meets my standards and fulfills my requests (I’ve colored my hair many times and always got compliments from others!)
They mostly use Goldwell styling products and even have some stuff for sale at their clean, quiet, spacious and artistic shop. Parking can be hard sometimes — it’s either metered or limited residential parking.
For those who care, Plato and Alice are both fluent in English and Chinese.

I used to live in Sunset and was referred to Plato Hair Design by a family friend. Even though I have been living in Oakland for 13 years now, I still faithfully go to Plato because they really listen to what I want and execute perfectly. Great color work. Both stylists are very passionate about their work. Despite having been in the business for a long time, they both treat every job with great attention and excitement!

The best color I’ve ever, ever had. Great haircut, too, and Plato is just the right warm but not over-​bearing personality. They feed your parking meter for you, which is very nice.

Plato is a highly skilled hair stylist with impeccable technique. Some stylists use razors (or god forbid thinning shears) as a quick-​and-​dirty shortcut to a style that then grows out of shape in a week). Not Plato. He has great scissor technique and when he uses razors, works with small sections of hair at a time. He really checks his cuts carefully. And the cuts last a long time and grow out beautifully.
I personally think his skills are rather under-​utilized, as most of his clients are women of a certain age, probably because of the out-​in-​the-​boonies location. But he’s given me gravity-​defying razor cuts as well as perfect bobs. He’s a master. My only complaints are that he has fixed ideas about what looks good on particular people so you need to be assertive about what you want. Another heads-​up: he likes to consult with you only *after* your hair has been washed by someone else. Always found that odd, but I keep going back because no one else can manage my super-​thick, straight Asian hair.
