No frills Mexican food, standard rice + beans + entrée platters. Nice blended Margs. Good service.

This place is awesome. Me and 7 other people showed up at 10pm on a Saturday and it was packed inside. But the service was out of this world and the food was awesome. We ran out of chips & salsa… boom! Someone showed up with more. Ordered a drink… Two minutes later bam! It’s on the table. Usually in this environment I’d expect a tired, grumpy waitress and waiting around all night for food, but no, they were super nice and food came out at a good pace. Beyond all this, the food was BANGIN. I got a burrito with stewed chicken and damn it was good. I know your nervous not going to your usual spot in the mission. Maybe your friends are relying on you to come up with something good. It’s okay. This is where you want to be.

So much on this block has changed. I am so happy PA hasn’t. The posole is great, the fajitas are great and the staff is great. Tip well! They work hard and keep prices reasonable where new businesses on the block haven’t. Mmmm salsa.

A decade ago I was a regular and this restaurant was my happy place either with a huge group of friends out on the town for the evening or with a smaller more intimate group of best friends or favorite boyfriends. It never disappointed in terms of yummy food and drinks and a fun/relaxed atmosphere. Any Mexican restaurant I visit to this day, the food and drinks are benchmarked to my favorites here. Today I returned with my children and though I wish they weren’t picky eaters that is my(fingers crossed(temporary)) current plight in life. Two things of note, my fond memories were validated and of bigger note, my finicky young eaters absolutely LOVED the food. My son even went so far as to say their rice was better than cake and pizza. I love the food here but I do love the occasional piece of cake or pizza and though the rice was great for me I’m not sure it would be better than cake. Well you get the idea, this is a fun, affordable and delicious Mexican restaurant today and 10+ years ago. Very reliable and worth the wait on weekend evenings.

Wonderful. Hard to believe that in SF it’s hard to find genuine, sit-down, Mexican food with a full bar & outdoor seating but this place has it all. Love it. Excellent service. Come support this great small business establishment.

Great spot! 5 stars for food, 4 stars for ambiance, 4.5 for service. We ordered the prawn fajita and carne asada burritos. Fantastic! In fact, my bf said it might have been his best burrito ever. The wait staff was also great. She was quick and the guy was great at clearing our dishes and completely wiping down the counter immediately. Overall, impressed! It has a dive bar feel. Not my favorite.

Four of us were here on a Tuesday night around 8,30pm and there was a 25min wait. This place gets pretty full. The host and waitress were nice and attentive. We went to Blondies bar next door, good place btw. Food was better than average(too bad Rondalla is still closed) but the prices are HIGH. The guacamole is fresh but lacking, no tomatoes or much cilantro. More flavor here please. it’s a pretty old, run down establishment which is another reason why I’m wondering why their prices are SO high. The original margarita was tasty. You’ll get less expensive and delicious Mexican food at Pancho Villa Taqueria or even La Corneta.

A bit crowded, but still amazing. There is always art on the wall and every now and then live music entertainment. Great service and great Mexican food. The quesadillas are delicious. However the nachos are odd, they are a bit dry and soggy. I’d still recommend you try out this place, I enjoy it.

I have been here over the years. I recently went back while visiting SFO and ate here. I just had a quesadilla but the tortilla seemed homemade and everything was amazing. The atmosphere is very casual but upbeat. Our server was very attentive. We really enjoyed it.

Old-school«LA Mexican-style» spot with decent margaritas, great combo dishes(taco, beans, rice) and a festive environment with the occasional Latin musicians serenading. The crispy taco is of course a safe bet are the enchilada. The salsa is just so-so, like most places in SF, and this is tragic as salsa is the backbone of Mexican cuisine. Still, a lovely place for a group night, often a wait, but patience is a virtue.

Delicious! Excellent customer service. As soon as I walked in, we were greeted by the bartender. He shows us our table. Our server came up the table, introduced himself and asked what we wanted to drink. Our waters were delivered seconds after and our margaritas arrived shortly after. I got the strawberry margarita and my date got the peach one. DELICIOUS! 15 minutes later I got my burrito and my date got the Fajitas. The food was delicious, the customer service was phenomenal and the dining area. I will be back again. Go Tigers!

This is the sorta place you probably went to with your family growing up in California. My husband and I have been coming here for years. The staff has been basically the same during that time, and they’re great. The food is tasty, not mind blowing or very creative, but it’s the bottomless thin, warm tortilla chips and pitchers of margaritas that are easy to go nuts on. Also, they’re not on the menu, but a person can request a «skinny margarita»

A festive atmosphere. Solid Mexican food. Great salsa. Strong margaritas. I actually love the salsas here. I, along w several coworkers, would come in after work just to do chips, salsa, & pitchers of margaritas. Service is good, too. Fast & friendly. We’ve sat at the bar, ordered margaritas & lunch, & were served everything in about 5 minutes. Drinks right away, followed by the grub. Of course, table service on a busy night is going to take longer. But we never feel neglected or abandoned, & the staff stays well humored. Hang in there. The grub… Old school Mexican. No frills, but authentic. Large plates & portions. The entrees themselves go between being bland to good. It’s hit or miss. For a lot of bang for your buck, this is a good spot. In a neighborhood that is downright overridden w hole in the wall taquerias, this is a rare & welcome full sit down Mexican restaurant. First come, first served. The wait can be long, it gets packed, & crazy, on busy nights & the weekends. Nurse a margarita, enjoy your company, & have a good time. 3& ½ stars.

My husband and I used to frequent Puerto Alegre at least once a month, but life got busy and we haven’t been there in a while. Cut to a two weeks ago when I was walking down Valencia St. for a community project and I looked up and saw the Puerto Alegre sign painted on their building. My mind(and stomach) immediately went to their crunchy, shredded chicken tacos and margaritas. My husband and I both had the evening off and I suggested we go to Puerto Alegre and he was so excited! He had the enchiladas and I had my usual mentioned above. We had such a lovely time enjoying our meal and the service was great — as always. LOVETHISPLACE.

After walking by this place numerous times and seeing so many people eating there, we finally came in to give it a try. Let’s just say the outside is wayyyy cuter than the inside. Wasn’t gonna let this stop us from eating there, plenty of ugly restaurants in SF with great food. Although the prices didn’t match the restaurant. Wayy overpriced for what it was. The chips and salsa were the highlight of our dinner unfortunately. They didn’t have any agua frescas last night. I had to drink Coke… Yuck. I had the fajitas and the bf had a chicharron plate. My fajitas had so little chicken, the plate could have been vegetarian… He barely ate any of his food if that tells you something… Dessert time! Flan?! Nope… They didn’t have that either… This place was a major disappointment, we spent $ 40 and didn’t even have a cocktail. Definitely sticking to Tacolicious and waiting next time. Don’t bother coming here. I will say our waiter was attentive and pleasant, she was the only star :)

5 stars !!! This place is where me and my girlfriend go to get the best Mexican food in the city. Margaritas are strong and tasty. Plus the food is always good. But what keeps us coming back — the amazing service. Family owned and operated. And if you frequent Puerto often– family is exactly what you feel like.

My boyfriend loves this place — and I can see why — the services is amazing, endless chips and salsa and the margaritas are great! To me — there are so many Mexican places in the Mission, that it will take me forever to find a favourite — but this place was pretty good. The food was quick, and delish. And the service was spot on. We had the nachos, quesadilla platter, and two margs each. Price wise — was pretty good! I’ll defo be back for a «cheap and cheerful» after work drink and snack!

The peach/strawberry margarita is Super Delish! Not to sweet, hint of lime, just right! I had the chicken mole plate and the mole was really good. Had a little bit of a kick to eat and I really like the rice they use. Their salsa is the also really good. Tangy and it goes we’ll on everything. bI could drink it.

We went here after going on the wild SF walking tour of the mission district. Our tour guide recommended it and we were greeted promptly and there was even live music! The chips and 2 salsas they served were excellent.:.The frozen strawberry margarita was heavenly and the burrito was probably the best burrito I have ever eaten. The service was mediocre– not bad but not great either. We will definitely be back when we are in the area!

A solid choice for home style Mexican food amongst a bevy of hipster/fusion/upscale eateries that has stood the test of time. You’ve probably stumbled by here too, maybe after a night out at the bar with pals or shopping. Perhaps, like me, you pass it all the time and never have given it a second look. However, Puerto Alegre is worth a second glance. Sure, it might not have artesian water or fancy pants ingredients you can’t pronounce(I’m assuming you know enough Spanish words to make it through the Mission and in a legit Mexican restaurant), but the food is good. It ain’t fancy – in fact, it seems a little dingy amongst all these new flashy spots. But, have a seat and savor one of the places that is truly the Mission. Everything here was pretty good. Not great. Service was kind of slow for a weekday lunch lull time spot(4 pm), but the waitresses were nice. The salsa that came with the chips was excellent. My fajitas were cooked nicely and I enjoyed my meal. The flan for dessert wasn’t very good, but I’m a harsh flan critic. Prices are good for the area(all things considered), portions just ok. I like this plucky, unassuming little spot and it looks like it could be a lot of fun for happy hour.

Well we’re group of 4 for today’s lunch. I ordered prawn burrito, asked it for super spicy but it came with red sauce on top of the burrito and inside it had stiffed with jalapeño. I was expecting a spicy Mexican sauce inside. I really didn’t like it with the jalapeño inside. Disappointed. My friends ordered chicken fajitas, chicken enchiladas and one ordered chicken burrito. Everyone agreed that the seasoning was way too less. Food was very average. Don’t expect a good mexican food here. Their complimentary chips and salsa tasted old and they used canned tomato for salsa. No spicyness in the salsa.

When I’m in San Francisco, this is where I go for my fix. This is my happy place and I thank G. for introducing me to it. I could probably eat here every day… Yea, I can get a cheese enchilada, guacamole, chips, salsa and a margarita in NYC, but, I’m sorry to say, it just doesn’t taste the same(yes, I realize there’s a stereotype that one can’t get good Mexican food on the East Coast and I’m playing right into that, but hey, we all know it’s a little bit true, right?). Here, at Puerto Alegre, the food is superb and well, almost magical. My usual dish? Cheese enchiladas. Hands down the best green and red mole sauce and I have a tough time deciding between the two sauces. The guacamole has a slight amount of heat and no tomatoes and is the perfect accompaniment to the Classic Margarita, which is nice and strong(it’s difficult to not order two margaritas). I have enjoyed stuffing my face here many times and always get giddy knowing that I can come back.
