Red A Bakery has quickly become one of my favorite little spots. It’s affordable and a no-frills destination for delicious Japanese inspired, Hawaiian BBQ. Their bulgogi, BBQ chicken and kalbi are finger-lickin’ good. The couple who runs this place is very sweet and always extremely friendly.

Came here for lunch, it was pretty packed they have about 5 tables each seating 4 people. We ordered a loco moco, short rib combo, and spam musubi. Everything was very good and we didn’t have to wait that long at all maybe about 7 minutes. Spam musubi is 2 dollars each. The prices were pretty average as far as hawaiin places go.

The musubi is delicious and so was the egg tart. Then hubby goes to use the restroom which requires walking through the kitchen and says we shouldn’t eat any more of the food. The back was filthy. I spent the next few hours waiting to vom. Clean it up guys!!!

I kind of stick out like a sore thumb when going into here… lol My son who loves the egg custard treat wanted to get some because Grandma was treating him… more like spoiling him. They have a variety of Asian foods and pastries to choose from. Never have been really disappointed by any of the food. Parking can be hard to find in this area.

My go to bakery place for bulk good bakery items. I was having a birthday party and wanted a variety of cakes, egg tarts, and other treats. Reasonable prices with a great selection to choose from. Their pastries aren’t too sweet, so it’s good for people who don’t like their pastries too sweet.

Red A is the best! They have a lot of great things to offer. They have been my go to place for party trays of Hawaiian BBQ and chicken katsu. They have the best musubi! The rice, meat, sauce ratio is always perfect. And what’s a party without cake?!? They also make great cakes! I went in with a cake design idea for my son’s 3rd birthday and it came out great! He was having a construction themed party and the owner reassured me that he will do a good job. The best part about this place are the prices! I basically bought a sheet cake with custom design and it was less than $ 100! They have never disappointed me or anyone at our parties!

I wanted Spam musubi and I’ve been on a kick where I only want to try new places. When I saw Red A Bakery was on DoorDash( ), I decided to get lunch delivered. We placed our order on Sunday, October 4th around 12:50pm. Our delivery arrived less than an hour later. Prices below are what I paid using DoorDash. *Kalua pig($ 8.95) *BBQ seafood combo($ 9.95): mahi mahi, shrimp, steak, short rib *Spam musubi($ 1.95 ea) x2 *Hawaiian bbq chicken musubi($ 1.95 ea) I got the combo and both musubis. The fish and the shrimp in the combo were perfectly fried. I’m glad they cut a hole in the take out container to prevent everything from getting soggy. The short ribs had a subtle smoke and good flavor. The beef was a little salty, so you definitely have to eat that with some rice. The combo comes with two scoops of rice and one scoop of macaroni salad. The musubis hit the spot for me. The spam could have been seared a little longer, but it had the salty meatiness I was craving. The chicken was tender and smoky. The roommate got the kalua pig plate. It doesn’t come with cabbage, but the pork had good flavor. This plate also comes with two scoops of rice and a scoops of macaroni salad. Good cheap option for Hawaiian food when I’m too lazy to leave the house. Even with DoorDash’s mark up, the prices are still a good deal!

Not bad. Stopped by with some friends because apparently this place is known for their spam musubi. It’s an interesting place that serves Chinese bakery goods for ridiculously cheap but also Hawaiian meals. It’s run by Cantonese people, so definitely an interesting mix. The spam musubi, though very, very cheap, ended up tasting okay. The spam was the most tender spam I’ve ever had so it had that going for it, but there was just way too much rice, and the rice was pretty meh. Seaweed was on point, flavor of the sauce was a little too subtle for me. The place was also objectively just… very disgusting. Tons of flies lurking around the middle of the store… good god, we had to wait for the spam musubi and just standing in the room with flies buzzing around you isn’t the greatest warm up to a meal. tldr; okay spam musubi, but place was pretty dirty — if I come back, I might get pastries to go, that’s probably the best way to approach this place

It is a Chinese bakery that also sells Hawaiian BBQ. Sounds very random but they are awesome! Prices are very good, especially because of the epic portions they give you. For example, they give you about 3 layers of chicken in the chicken katsu rice plate. I’ve tried a bunch of their rice plates and they are all good, huge portions, and inexpensive. I’ve only tried the BBQ chicken sandwich so far and it is one of the best things I’ve eaten. The musubi are okay. Huge rolls, but too much rice. If they made them smaller or season the rice a little and it will be perfect. The Chinese pastries are good, but not as good as my gotos in Oakland chinatown, but this may be my new goto for pastries in SF. However, I like trying oatmeal man Taos from any pastry shop that makes those, and I have to say that these folks make the best.

There is only one dish that I’ve tried here and I really don’t want to share my hidden gem but it’s time people learned about the GARLICSHRIMP that these people are making. *fans self* The seating is okay, plenty of smaller tables so you can eat comfortably with a small group. The wait time is usually quite quick and they make delicious baked goods as well as the BEST and most affordable garlic shrimp($ 8.25 for a serving + rice + macaroni salad). Treat yourself to this little slice of heaven, the people here work hard and make great food c:(although the spare ribs or beef can be a little dry, you’ve been warned lol)

I really love this place. I try to rate places based on what they set out to do. This place really accomplishes its goals. It’s a total guilty pleasure and a great pick-up on the way home after work. Price: 4.5 stars, totally good, cheap deals Service: 4 stars, look… it’s not like going to Gary Danko, okay? Still, they’re very sweet and helpful. Ambiance: 3 stars, it’s not much, but it’s not bad at all. My favorite part(not sarcasm) is the ever-present group of old dudes chillin’ at one of the corner tables. Food: 4 stars: chicken katsu is nice and crunchy(with the carbolicious delight sides of rice+macaroni salad+rice) and the various musings are my faves.

Dont be fooled by the ratings and take a a lady here for some authentic hawaiian treats. I suspect this rating is result of their katsu sandwich which has a very high(taste+portion)/price number. It fulfills that niche circumstance when you are hungry broke and eating alone or with maybe one other equally hungry broke guy friend. It is reminiscent of a McChicken sandwich from McDonalds but larger and of slightly higher quality. With that bit in mind, eat away friend. Eat away.

Really decently priced filling food. I enjoyed the BBQ mix plate and they have it to me in a to go which was smart because for nine bucks I could feel two people. It was well cooked and flavored meat so what more can you ask for. Great café feel lots of older people eating pastries and talking a very communal Spot.

As a Hawaii transplant, I must note that I have a certain bias here. I walked past this place while hunting for good dim sum and saw a sign saying hawaiian food so I had to step inside and check it out. While none of the food was particularly good, I am giving this place a few extra stars simply because there are not many places you can buy multiple types of hawaiian style musubi. This place offers chicken, beef, katsu and spam options for your musubi. They also have a handful of plate lunch choices and various baked goods with tropical flavors like pineapple and coconut mixed in. Again, not the greatest place out there and I probably won’t be coming back, but I did appreciate seeing more hawaiian style food up here in SF.

Their spam musubi is SO good here! Like. Really really good. We also ordered their rice plates [all to go], and weren’t quite as impressed with it. the rice plates were a little bit lacking. But the spam musubi tho. Parking can be kind of difficult, so I don’t know that I’d be back very often, but hey — if you’re craving spam & you’re in the area, stop by!

When you are driving along Clement Street, and you look ahead, you see a sign off the 2nd floor saying ‘Hawaiian Style BBQ’. But when you pull up front, it says, ‘Red A Bakery’. So is it a Chinese bakery downstairs and a BBQ place upstairs? Nope, in true Asian«all-in-one» fashion, its a Chinese BBQ bakery… err a bakery that uses Chinese BBQ… err…just read on. When I first stumbled upon this establishment over 5 years ago, it blew my mind. I mean WTH? I’m Hawaii born and raised so of course the ‘Hawaiian Style BBQ’ drew me in. But after walking past the front door, I was overwhelmed by old Chinese men talking among themselves in Cantonese, drinking tea and coffee, eating Chinese pastries. Where is the«local kine grindz»?? I walked to the counter and looked above. to my amazement, there were pictures of BBQ plate lunches and katsu(breaded and deep fried pork or chicken) sandwiches, just like back home. Was I dreaming? How can this be? At first, I wondered how this Chinese bakery can put out some local Hawaii plate lunches. I mean… really, can they make a mean mac salad? What about the kalbi? Would the BBQ chicken be grilled chicken smothered with teriyaki sauce like at other so called Japanese(but actually Chinese run) restaurants? Hmph! I ordered the standard to measure any drive-in restaurant back in Hawaii — the mixed plate. Its called mixed plate, because well, its a mixture of a variety of meats. Some have BBQ and katsu combos, while the BBQ mixed plate is a mixture of BBQ chicken, BBQ beef(thinly sliced pieces of meat) and kalbi(Korean short ribs). Of course, it MUST have 2 scoops of rice and a scoop of macaroni salad. Why 2? Because 1 scoop isn’t enough! Oh and the macaroni salad should NOT have any crunchy stuff like pickles or celery in it. That’s just gross. So anyway, I ordered the BBQ mixed plate and waited. Meanwhile I thought, do these guys run out the back door to a Hawaiian restaurant that actually makes these? Just the thought of a Chinese bakery making Hawaiian BBQ plate lunches still bewildered me. About 5 minutes later, I hear a «Hallo hallo???» Oh uh, I guess that’s me. So I get it and my eyeballs pop out. It looks just like back home! Even had the shredded cabbage. Whoa! THISISNUTS! Let me tell you, I don’t know if I was super hungry or what, but I finished it off in record time. Over the years, I’ve tried other dishes and they were pretty solid. The BBQ pork sandwich was a little chewy, probably because they use more fatty pork portions(to save cost). The good thing in that sandwich though, is that they put picked radish in it. Winnerz! Flash to May 2014, well today’s date. I walk in there and figure yeah, I’ve been here, done that. Let me get«my usual». I look up and its different. Yup, now they have a new menu. Now only 2 things require a new menu — new management or new prices. Ok same people, so that means they raised their prices. After coming home and opening up my BBQ mixed plate, I realize that they cut down on the portions too. Higher prices for less food can’t be good. I can’t recall the original prices, but figure they raised the price on everything. Can’t blame them, I mean 5 years is quite a long time to have the same price. From looking at the photos from other reviewers, the spam musubi was $ 1.50(now its $ 1.75) and my BBQ mixed plate was $ 7.95(now its $ 8.75). So now I’m torn. I’m bummed. But they know that I have no choice. There are few places in San Francisco that have Hawaiian plate lunches so I guess I gotta take it or leave it. Way back when, I would give this place 5 stars. The BBQ side was good and their Chinese bakery side was not bad(I’m Japanese so don’t hold me to it though). But now, based on the new prices and smaller portions I give it 3 stars. I’d probably still come back,…just because.
