It’s been a while since we were here, but I can still remember how amazing the food was. It wasn’t very busy, the place was clean, service was excellent. I ordered french toast with crème fresh. It was amazing. The bread was sweet, chewy and moist. It was cooked perfectly. The crème fresh was a perfect addition. It was garnished with pomegranate seeds, which added a perfect little tart pop.

This is one of the most delicious places in town. I’ve never had a dish here I didn’t like, and the lighting and interior are mellow, simple and pretty. Perfect for a romantic dinner! Currently it is usually very easy to get a reservation or to walk in, but I hope it gets more challenging soon, because everyone should be eating here! If you’re used to having trouble parking in the Mission, FYI there is a lot of parking(including a big paid lot) on the side streets across Potrero, next to the hospital & behind the Walgreens.

Cold, empty, terrible music and sad food… The décor was really nice — marble countertops, and wood benches, nice metal table tops(cold though) The server was very pleasant, but the food … oh the food… we ordered many dishes to share, probably ¾ of the dishes on the menu. The first to arrive was a radish and bone marrow butter plate — literally 5 radishes(with root on) they were very woody tasting, not crisp and fresh… and the bone marrow butter tasted like unsalted butter. The fava bean salad had litterally 5 fava beans on it. The ½ crab entrée took no effort on their part as the crab was good and the customer had to do all the work cracking the crab… The desserts were inedible — an espresso crème brûlée tasted like they forgot to put sugar in it and the angel food cake was dense(?) Too bad this adorable restaurant isn’t any good.

Solid place for dinner but Weekday nights were a bit dead(we came in May). There were only 2 tables of clients. it may be due to the are in which the restaurant is situated. I would recommend– Bavette with piopinno mushroom, wild ramps(with greens), and fiddlehead ferns. Lots of exotic ingredients in the accompaniment which makes it fun to try and the Bavette steak is very good(often served as menu du jour in Paris) Fried artichokes — well done. Not too oily. Tender but because of the preparation of quick frying it, it doesn’t have the overly artichoke flavor that offen comes with steamed artichokes. Skip — Chilled asparagus soup — too asparagus tasting that this starts to taste like an asparagus smoothie Grilled halibut salad — the greens didn’t necessarily go with the halibut. Reminded me of a monk’s version of a halibut dish. The dishes are well thought through — would recommend this place if you haven’t tried it. Probably on a weekend night. Oh. Very reasonable corkage for half bottle wines here!

I like new places focusing on fresh ingredients and creative dishes with a menu good for sharing. The restaurant is super cute, causal and great for a small group of date night. The service could use some attention and be a bit more attentive, took a while to get our waiter to our table and get our order in and wine opened. Not a fan of of the metal tables, looks like a cafeteria and lacks class. Gnochi: we liked the flavors, loved the mushorooms, but the frying made them more chewy and less tender as gnochi can be. Oyster bignett: one of the worst dishes I’ve ever had, we couldn’t taste the oyster, and it was too tough, hard, nothing about it was airy and light or like a bignett should be Steak Tartar: nice, classic dish, could use more flavor Cod: very small portion, even if I was eating it on my own, the fish was tiny, the sides were nice, too much greens and not enough flavor, too flat and bland Carrots: unevenly cooked, some were hard, some overcooked, again lacked flaovor The nice part, they didn’t charge us for the corkage, so we had a very nice wine with our meal that made it much better! I hope they improve, a very nice addition to the neighborhood!

I actually dined here a while back last year and never got around to writing a review, but that is not going to stop me from writing about my sad birthday dinner here. Dinner overall was just average. Not memorable, so it’s hard for me to bring up specifics. All i remember is that portions were small. What I do remember VERY vividly: We were wrapping up my birthday dinner with two desserts that we ordered. Halfway through dessert, our waiter comes out with my birthday surprise — a plate with a lit candle on it. Nothing else is on the plate — just the sad, lonely candle. It was embarrassing and awkward. Not sure how I was supposed to react. Maybe the waiter meant to stick the candle in one of our desserts and he forgot. But at that point, you might as well have not given me anything. That would’ve been better. The memory still haunts me to this day.

Browsing Unilocal pics en route to dinner proves problematic if you don’t cross reference it with the restaurant’s latest menu. Such was the case with Sous Beurre’s enticing Wild Mushroom En Croute; I had my heart set on its flakey puff pastry crust, as documented by other Unilocalers, but it was not on the menu. The only mushroom dish available was Black Trumpet Mushroom Cassoulet, which I ordered because I love when a dish is built around hearty veggies. Only three stars for this dish because the elements I thoroughly enjoyed — vegetable confit of parsnips and baby carrots — were sparse, while the elements I could’ve lived without — butter beans and tasteless mushrooms — were served in abundance. French & Californian influences produce perfect hybrids of elegant & casual evident in Sous Beurre’s atmosphere, service, & cuisine. A lovely dining experience that, although underwhelming this time around, undoubtedly deserves a second glance.

TLDR: Loved this place but bad service and a bug = 2 stars I really wanted to love this place. Very cute when you walk in. Quiet. My husband and I thought we found our new date spot. It’s pricy for what you get. But I like small portions. Wine just OK. I still would have given 4 stars because we don’t have many French options in the area. The service is slow, which I actually didn’t mind. But then we found a bug on our salad plate. The staff was more worried about how to safely release the snail into the wild than the fact that we had consumed food that may have contained a few friends of his. I understand these things happen but there was no apology and we were charged full price on the salad. For the price I expected better.

We had reservations at noon, arrived early, and was seated immediately. It helped that it was(surprisingly) pretty empty. We already knew what we wanted so once the waiter came by, we ordered right away. As we sat at the table and waited, I went from not hungry to super hungry. 30 minutes passed and our neighboring table(who ordered after we did) already got their food and started eating. How is it possible that we still didn’t? The waiter came by a few minutes after, apologized for the delay and offered us coffee(which was nice but it could’ve happened sooner). It took nearly 40 minutes for our food to finally arrive. Food was enjoyable, but I’m not in love. And with a 40 minute wait after ordering? Ehhh, I don’t see myself coming back anytime soon. BRUNCHCRUNCH($ 13) [+] sous vide hash brown had a nice soft boiled egg inside(yes, inside!) [+/-] but it got soggy pretty quickly since the egg was inside the hash brown [+/-] bacon tasted like any type of average bacon GRILLEDBRIOCHEFRENCHTOAST($ 12) crème brûlée batter, satsuma orange, pomegranate, walnuts, chantilly & maple syrup [+/-] the flavor was all in the cream and syrup [-] not sure I ever really tasted«crème brûlée» [-] all the flavors listed(orange, pomegranate, walnuts, etc.) were just dumped on the french toast, not incorporated in the french toast flavor NOTE: Menu items change daily.

Date night consisting of dinner and a show brought us to our reservations at Sous Beurre Kitchen last evening. Walking in off the street, Sous Beurre looks vastly unlike any other place on the block, both fitting the name/theme greatly and making it stand out a little like a sore thumb. Despite all that, we had a lovely, albeit pricey, dining experience. THEHIGHLIGHTS. + Beautiful interior with marble counter-tops, exposed shelving, two full storefronts converted into their restaurant, and a fabulous open bar + Friendly, quick, and efficient service — not once did a glass linger too long on our table or a dish take too long to come out ~ Drinks seem to consist mostly of wine, beer, or cocktails made with a choice few liquors(didn’t see much else option-wise) ~ Portion sizes are quite small for what you pay for; our steak tartare was good but filled up about 1⁄6 of the plate we received ~ Tables are a few inches too close together than I prefer(but at least I got to hear the anecdote about ‘never buy telescopes from THAT girl again!’) For the record, our two entrées were phenomenal — but again, very small portions(if you’re fine with that kind of thing, I highly recommend the): + BLACKTRUMPETMUSHROOMCASSOULET w/VEAL SWEETBREADS($ 30) + SLOWSEAREDDUCKBREAST w/LEMON CONFIT($ 28) The duck was literally just two slices of breast, which was surprising, but it was so delicious, that we didn’t walk away too annoyed. On top of that, the small plate of desserts we were brought after requesting the cheque were impressively good(especially their truffles). It was a steep bill in the end, and I don’t think we’d be in a rush to return based on location/cost, but you’re in for a real culinary treat here — foodies would probably be ecstatic about this place!
I went for dinner. Unique, inspired dishes. French with a twist. The Cornish game hens were delectable as well as the bread salad that came with it. Other great dishes include the mussels in a velvety butter sauce and the scallops with zucchini ribbons– Yum! Service was also fantastic. Now I have to check out the brunch now!

I really, really wanted to love this place because it is two blocks away from my house. This whole French-Southern combination is so not working for me though. Came in on Wednesday for the $ 1 oysters — a friend and I each had 12. Solid flap jacks and you can’t beat the price. The mignonette sauce could have packed more flavoe though. We shared the roasted bone marrow and slow seared duck breast. The bone marrow was an awful combination of Southern and French cuisines. The cumin and lamb«pancetta» hid the delicious fatty flavor that usually comes with bone marrow. I’ll be going to The Cavalier soon to eat bone marrow done right. I also had difficulty with this bone marrow because it wasn’t cooked as much as it could have been, and the lack of a marrow spoon to eat it with made it very difficult to pry out of the bone. The duck breast was cooked well though and had very good flavor; I enjoyed the vegetable arrangement that came with it as well. The ambiance of this place is very cute so it is worth coming back to every now and then… I’ll just make sure to steer clear of certain flavor combos.

Oh my word, delicious, mesmerizing, impeccable service-all in all a wonderful meal. After drooling over the menu for a month or so I got the chance to visit this establishment with a friend visiting from the East Coast. It was a Monday, it was raining, this was just what we needed. We asked to be seated on the food bar, where we could watch the meal preparation by the chefs and my, was that a great choice. We saw how meticulous they were with the dishes and how much effort they put into each one. We ordered a bottle of red, the steak tartare, slow seared duck breast, a side of brussel sprouts, the cheese plate for dessert, and I ordered a salad which is no longer on the menu. The service was impeccable, never an empty water glass for long and very attentive with menu questions. The hostess was also accommodating in our seating request and when I called to inform her I would be a little late for the reservation due to the rain and our horrible driver getting lost consistently. The wine went perfect with both of our meals and sitting on the Chef’s Table we were tempted to get everything offered since each dish look divine. We started with steak tartare and boy was it delectable, the flavors were inciting and the presentation was pretty. The duck breast was by far the best dish out of the ones we had ordered, perfectly cooked, the veggies were done well, and the presentation was great. The salad had a bit too much dressing for me but thats how I usually feel. We had to get the brussel sprouts after when we saw them being made and the cheese plate since we had so much wine left in the bottle. We almost ordered another dinner just to try what was coming out of the kitchen… so tempting! All in all I will definitely be back, I’d have to say this is my new favorite restaurant and I’d like to try everything I can on the menu. From what I saw the whole roasted hen looked perfect for two people, possibly three depending on what else you order. The steak looked great as well… I mean, lets get real, everything looked amazing and if you’re in the mood for french food you should check this place out. If it’s your first time/if you’re only with another person, try sitting at the Chef’s table if it’s open-usually its for a large party and has a specific menu but you never know if you don’t inquire!

Walked here from the Mission. Good way to get our steps in. Cute place, damn good food, great service. I ordered: LEPETITDEJEUNER Mt. Tam cheese, warm baguette, seasonal jam, house cultured butter & fruit+side of hash browns with béarnaise Lemme tell you, my mauf has still not recovered. Never had hash browns that good! The béarnaise was amaze. The baguette was so yummy with that cheez! Creamiest dairy masterpiece I. Have. Ever. Tasted. Fruit was fresh and delicious! Just wow, so damn good. I’ll be back, and shall return with family, friends, and repeat!

Wow, we just had an amazing brunch at Sous Berre Kitchen! So wish we had checked this place out much, much sooner. Such an inventive and sophisticated menu but without an air of pretension. My wife had the Le Petit Dejeuner(Mt. Tam cheese, warm baguette, seasonal jam, house cultured butter & fruit). It’s like an elegant little European breakfast, every component just superb in quality. I had the Brunch Crunch(sous vide hash browns, soft boiled egg, house-smoked bacon, apple mustarda & béarnaise) and it was epic. The soft boiled egg is encased in a large hash brown ball(kinda like a scotch egg) and lathered with their house béarnaise, it’s absolutely decadent. The bacon was perfectly cooked, just lacking a slight bit in flavor. The apple mustarda was quite tasty too, a perfect blend of spicy and sweet. Just a dazzling set of flavors in one entrée. The aesthetic is very modern but with old world French accents. Service was friendly and attentive. Really solid. Hope to return to try the dinner menu in the not too distant future.

I came here with coworkers after work for some drinks. The bartender was wonderfully sweet and our drinks were delightful. We also ordered some tartare and bread. Food was okay; we weren’t super impressed but then again we just wanted drinks and bar noms. The décor inside is nice and staff is friendly. However, for the price, I’m not that impressed. I would definitely come again to try actual food. If they did a happy hour for drinks, it would be a great spot after work. I just wouldn’t pay that much for casual drinks after a long day at work. Little side story: as we were enjoying our drinks at the bar, another customer came up to the bartender and said, «Excuse me, but I just saw a rodent run from the kitchen into the bar. We would like to just pay for our tea and leave.» Unfortunately, we had already started eating our tartare when the lady saw the rat. That also adds to my «meh» feeling towards Sous Beurre.

Eating alone at a French bistro is rather sad, n’est-ce pas? I mean you can eat sushi alone or a burrito, but a meal en Français seems more appropriate as a tête-à-tête experience, at least that’s what I learned from Audrey Hepburn movies. Jamie W. was otherwise engaged at a community meeting last Thursday, and believe me, I had every intention of getting a solitary bowl of menudo at Tio Chilo’s. However, when I got off the 9, I gave this place a passing glance and was a bit surprised how empty it was. Granted it was just shy of 6PM, but I thought at least the bar would be a hub of activity. But no, it was as still as a tomb. The interior was inviting in warm hues and looking very Left Bank(photo: ), yet here it is taking up two storefronts on the Mission’s most eclectic thoroughfare, 24th Street. I tentatively walked up to the empty host station presuming I would be turned away without a reservation. But no, she walked up and greeted me warmly offering either a table or a bar. Feeling too guilty to take up a table, I took up residence at the end of the bar where I had a good view of the staff busily preparing for the dinner rush. Chris the bartender handed me the smallish but stylish French Provencal menu with eight starters and seven main dishes(photo: ). The starter was a slam dunk, but I was perplexed since their fabled roasted Cornish game hen was nowhere to be seen. I heard it was amazing. So it became a choice between the $ 29 Sous Vide Rabbit Saddle and the $ 30 Braised Veal Breast. He explained the differences in patient detail, and we both agreed the veal would be the heartier selection I was Jonesing for. Before that came out, I first had a cocktail, the $ 12 Negroni Sbagliato, just the refreshing respite I wanted right off the bat with the Campari-like Cappelletti, Dolin Dry Vermouth and Cocchi Torino(photo: ). Chris made a very smooth elixir indeed. For my starter, I went with the $ 14 Fig and Heirloom Melon Salad with honeydew and fennel sliced thinly and soaked in sauternes; mixed with fromage blanc, nasturtium and micro sorrel; and topped with Mission figs(photo: ). Light and tasty, it made me think that the French dishes were sifted through a California cuisine mindset. I’m not sure that was the intention of chef/owner Michael Mauschbaugh, but it was working for me. When the veal arrived, it felt like I transported from Napa to Provence, as it came with perfectly prepared sweetbreads, fricassée and chervil with a Bordelaise sauce(photo: ). It was definitely an entrée to remember, a highly creative execution with a savory richness that didn’t overwhelm. I finished my Negroni, so Chris set me up with the $ 10 Beer & Shot which was exactly that, a HenHouse Beer from Petaluma and a glass of Amontillado Sherry(photo: ). Mix in your gullet with appropriate abandon. Dessert now appeared necessary at this point, and I went with both barrels and ordered the $ 12 Passion Pit, wedges of passion fruit cake, elderberries, fromage blanc ice cream and candied passion fruit seeds(photo: ). Sure, it was decadent, but sometimes I just deserve a meal fit for Charlemagne. FOOD/DRINKS — 5 stars… stellar plates and cocktails, lighter French fare than other bistros but genuinely satisfying AMBIANCE — 4.5 stars… Parisian by way of Napa but cozier and more modern in tone SERVICE — 5 stars… great job, Chris… thanks TOTAL — 5 stars… nice find in an unlikely location amid all the taquerias and coffeehouses

Great place. Went there for dinner on a holiday. Got there around six and we were the only ones in there. It was nice to get the personalized service. Within minutes it started to fill up with laughing and happy voices. We ordered some sparkling wine to start the celebration. Later tried the blend Domaine du Pouy Cotes de Gascogne 2013 which was inexpensive yet a very good red. The menu is pretty small and changes frequently. So all the pictures you see posted here may be gone when you get there. Doesn’t matter though, their food is all good. I tried the seared local squid appetizer and also the Pissaladiere which was lamb, olives, and cured radish. For the main had the braised veal breast. All dishes were exquisite. For desert shared a light cake with raspberry. Don’t recall what it was called but it was also very good. Their busiest nights are Th-Sat. Closed Sun.

I just really love the Mission. You can walk from Philz, to a taqueria, to a fancy little French restaurant. This place is totally hidden, and, location-wise, feels out of place once you walk in. An open kitchen, bar, high ceilings, mood lighting… feels very classy but not pretentious. Honestly, the perfect spot for a first date. European style, so tax and tips are included in the menu price. The menu changes, and I tried the mussels which were pretty good. The sauce was heavier than I would have preferred, but that didn’t stop me from devouring the entire plate. We had a reservation for 7 which I would recommend, since it was pretty full for a Thursday night. Surprisingly we had to wait a long time for our food… not a big deal, though. Even though the tip is included, the wait staff is still very kind and diligent. Our group sat and talked for probably than 2 hours and we felt no pressure to leave. Tons of street parking which is always a plus.

The appetizers and desserts we had at Sous Beurre Kitchen were delightful, but the entrees did not hold their own. Service was good, and the space was pleasant. Note that prices on the menu(and listed below) are all-inclusive of taxes, fees, and tips. Hope this trend takes off! I’ll start with the good and end with the not-so-good. === GOOD === * Salt cured trout salad with crème fraîche, mizuna, dill blossom, cucumber + dill vinaigrette — $ 14 Had the whole meal been like this salad, it would have been a 5 star meal. This dish used a reliable combination of ingredients but somehow made it taste even more amazing than usual. * Terrine of stone fruit sorbet with crispy red rice + quinoa — $ 9 Beautiful and tasty! The sorbet was bursting with fruit flavor, and the crunch on top made it extra interesting. * Bread with cultured butter — $ 2 Delicious. I’m glad that a restaurant with«beurre» in the name delivered on good butter! * Rabbit + guinea fowl pâté — $ 12 The pâté was smooth and flavorful. It had notes of fruit too. I tasted banana, which is a bit unfortunate since I hate bananas. Others tasted stone fruit. Unfortunately, it suffered from the«not enough crostini to go with the pâté» problem that seems to be a common affliction among restaurant pâtés. === OK === * Moules à la crème — $ 19 The mussels were a bit puny and shriveled, but the sauce was predictably good and the kind you mop up with bread. === MEH === * Truffle stuffled guinea fowl with garlic sausage, garbanzo beans, borage, squash blossoms — $ 32 Again, not much truffle flavor. The fowl was a bit under seasoned, but the garlic sausage was good. * Whole black rock fish with cherry tomatoes, padrons, corn, lemon confit — $ 65 My friends got this and reported that while the texture was perfect, the fish was seriously underseasoned. * English pea wild rice crêpe with chanterelles, truffled crème fraîche, pea sprouts, mint — $ 24 Very dry, with nothing to hold the filling and crêpe together. Not much truffle flavor.

My boyfriend made a reservation in this Sour Beurre Kitchen-French Restaurant for my birthday dinner because we thought they would have foie gras(my favorite appetizer). Unfortunately they didn’t serve foie gras this evening, which was very disappointed me. It made me felt that we came to the wrong place for my birthday dinner since my goal here to try foie gras. But it was okay, I would still like to try other dishes too so we stayed. Interest point: Sous Beurre has this interesting idea that tax and tips are included in the prices listed on their menu. Service: The staff was wonderful! I got a candle on my beautiful dessert plate so I could make a wish on my birthday. Our waiter was warm, friendly, and attentive, but he was taking care of 6+ tables, so sometimes took him a little bit longer to serve our table. Anyhow, food service ran smoothly and efficiently(because there was another staff helped to carry out the food) until dessert which took more than 20 minutes to receive. Appetizers: Our first appetizers was Moules A la Crème($ 18, big portion), it served with local cove mussels, garlic, cream and grilled bread. The mussels tasted very good and fresh. The garlic cream sauce was just good that you could dip with grilled bread. It was a good start actually. Second appetizers was Pissaladière($ 15), it served with Lamb ’ Pancetta’, quail eggs, cured olives & radish. It was a so amazing dish, just couldn’t wait to say that. ^_^ I loved this dish so much, it tasted/looked like a mini pizza with four small slices but so much better than pizza because the quail eggs and cured olives, Lamb ‘Pancetta’ made it tasted just perfect. It made me happy back, and felt that I did come to the right place because I got to try out this dish. Entrees: Pan Seared Rockfish($ 28), it was served with foie butter, haricot verts, yellow wax beans, almonds & Seaweed butter sauce. Rockfish with foie butter tasted very good, juicy and rich. The haricot verts and yellow wax beans were cooked just right. They were tasted very good with almonds & seaweed butter sauce. I loved this dish. Guinea fowl($ 26), I don’t recommend to order this dish. The worse dish for the evening, there were two garlic sausages tasted weird and truffed breast were very chewy too. Bad dish overall and it was with very small portion too, smaller than these appetizer dishes we ordered. Dessert:($ 9) Straw & oats: A delicious crumble accompanied with sweetened strawberries, and frozen strawberry yogurt. A really great way to end what was an amazing evening. Only complaint: it was iced cold, felt like too much ice in the frozen yogurt(perhaps they added extra ice into it). Stone fruit granite: It looks very pretty but tasted so-so, and it was too icy. It was an okay dessert for us. Overall, it is still a very good place to dine and try out other dishes, and again, not Guinea fowl.

I’m very lucky to have the No1DP as my bf and culinary partner-in-crime. He took me here the evening after graduation. So the following review will be dedicated to him for all the love and support he’s given me from beginning to end. Actual dine-in date: March 19. Menu changes monthly. CONCEPT: Sous Beurre Kitchen(«in butter» in French) serves Provençal-style(south of France) food. The restaurant strives to be affordable by having the a-la-carte options no more than $ 25(though the $ 25 plates take up half the menu) with a tasting menu for $ 85⁄5 courses with additional $ 30 wine pairing. Additionally this is one of the few restaurants that the menu prices are all inclusive, tips are not accepted in lieu of having the staff receive a living wage and substitutions are politely declined. VENUE: The restaurant looks and feels like a kitchen ripped out of Provence and placed into SF from the walls and the open kitchen to the plates and silverware served. SERVICE: Since tipping is abolished, there is no incentive for one waitstaff to serve throughout the dining experience. At least three people served our meal — with one of them the sommelier serving one of the small plates. During the soup course the primary waitstaff realized late into the course that we weren’t served spoons; spoons were brought out and each person that was involved with serving our food up to this point apologized profusely for their mistake. It then becomes the collective responsibility of the front-end staff to ensure a good dining experience for all involved. The No1DP and I did March’s tasting menu with wine pairings. Although I have the list that contains the wines served with our meals, I forgot how the wines tasted so I apologize for no wine commentary in this review. 1. Raw Bay Scallops(consome, celeriac timbale, mustard greens, salmon & trout roe) w/Gerard Bertrand Cremant de Limoux Rose«Cuvee Thomas Jefferson» 2012. The celeriac is actually what gives the dish its creaminess as it is baked in a timbale mold. The consome creates the broth that is soaked with the mustard greens and trout roe, while the scallops and salmon roe are above the mashed celeriac. The celeriac has a taste and feel of polenta though slightly lighter. I love scallops and most dishes involving roe and this is just another unique way to combine them into a dish. It’s best to mix the celeriac/salmon roe/scallop mixture to make the soup more creamy. 2. Rabbit Rillette Tartine(piccoline olives, little gems, radish, quail egg & gaufrette) w/Domaine de Pouy 2013, Bourdeaux Blanc. Using Google entrée #2’s name is descriptive of the dish — an open-faced sandwich(tartine) of rabbit pâté(rillette). The little gems resemble the center heart of the romaine lettuce in which the rabbit rillette is spread. The olives are diced into little pieces, the quail egg is tiny and sliced in half and the gaufrettes are served like chips. Though each ingredient stands out on its own as being excellent in quality, I can see how this descriptive title is used to mask that it’s just a sandwich of rabbit pâté. Though it does make for a good picture due to the tiny proportions used in this plate. 3. Onion Soup(bone marrow, baguette & comte) w/Le Cirque 2011, vin de pays de Cotes Catalanes. The No1DP saw this strip of fat and immediately gave it to me; he’s not too fond of rich«beef fat». The bone marrow was cooked in its own juices with plenty of onion. It was also on top of a croûton-style bagette with cheese. There was an explanation as to how this dish was created but I forgot all of the details as I was entrenched into finishing all of my fat. 4. Pressed Breast of Pheasant(turnip, wild mushrooms, spelt risotto & jus) w/Hecht & Banner 2010, Languedoc. Spelt is a high-nutrient, high-fiber wheat with moderate amount of gluten. This is used as the risotto analogue though this does not affect the final taste; I just thought the grain was«nutty». The wild mushrooms complemented the nutty risotto and the pheasant was tender and not too«gamey». This was the second time I had pheasant served as a risotto and I prefer this version to the other version I had a few years back. 5. Apple Mille Feuille(pistachio, pastry cream & ginger) w/«Cidre Leger»(Fuji Apple Cider, Dolan Dry, Cardamaro, Oregat). There were two alternating layers of sliced apple with the mille-feuille pastry. There was a good proportion of apple to pastry and the dish itself was not too rich or sweet. The one drink I do remember having was the cider and I thought it was too heavy for this delicate dessert. I seldom go to French restaurants, much less experience a good French restaurant. The key to experiencing a good French restaurant is to be aware and appreciate the more«subtle» elements and flavors of a dish. As the No1DP had more experience in the European cuisines than me, I appreciated being the culinary«student» for the day.

Spectacular value based on first world standards. Great spot for a first date 8+/10. The menu prices are all inclusive containing taxes and tips. Very smart move to avoid un-called for bad ratings from douchebags for discounting the place for nitpicky experience spots based on their PMS cycle(that I’m also humanly guilty of at times). Food: Amazesticles overall –Chicken liver mousse, one of the smoothest and most savory I’ve had, much duck fat involved and you don’t want to know exactly how much –Foie gras salad, the salad was whatever but the foie gras was perfectly buttery in texture, and the pheasant duck pieces were adequately fragrant –Bavette steak au poivre, awesome spinach purée, great skirt steak flavors at medium rare, personally thought the peppercorn encrusted on the side came too strong at times –Wild mushroom en croute was more of a miss, puff pastry was too bland, spots of mushrooms were too salty, preparation was lacking in that the dish did not come together well, notably so when I got some large crystals of salt(thank goodness not meth) in my mouth. –Kay standard desserts Service: –On point Ambiance: –Casual fine dining, perfect for tinder dates 8+ on hotness scale and 6– on potential crazy

Casual yet classy… with high quality dishes. It was a bit disappointing when they ran out of the foie-ly salad and stuffed trout, but I’m not gonna ding’em for that cause I know I’ll be back to try that next time. I ordered a flight of rose and… Oysters — I can slurp these all day Mixed Green Salad — simple, but with quality ingredients you can taste Quail — yummy Bavette Steak — very satisfying Lamb — lighter than I’d expected with delicate flavors I enjoyed every dish and would not hesitate to order again. At the current price point, food quality and service, I think this place is a big winner. Prices are ALL inclusive; my check didn’t even have a spot to write in gratuity — just sign and done. Props to Unilocal and Unilocalers for this great find and thanks to SBK for delivering an awesome meal.

Absolutely wonderful. They did a great job with the space — so charming and warm with a rustic feel. I just felt at at home — cozy feel reinforced by the friendly staff and great food. We live a few blocks away and were thrilled to hear of the opening especially after seeing such rave reviews after only 7 weeks. A friend had michael(chef) cook for her dinner party through kitchit last year and loved the meal so were eager to try out his restaurant. All sort of came together nicely. The starters — oysters Fuji apple and Brussel sprout salad(WOW!) i was hesitant from photos online. seemed bleh and ordinary but the flavors were delightfully paired! what a refreshing dish. The sunchokes provided a little crispy texture then a smokey flavor from the paprika with the apple. Yum! One of my favorites. Mushroom en croute — mushroom pot pie more or less and also good. Boudin blanc — another delicious surprise. Sausage not to be missed. Mains-I didn’t think they were QUITE as good as he starters but it may have also been the fact that I was starting to fill up by this point. Rack of lamb, Bavette steak and quail were all good but not quite as thrilling as the starters. Overall great service. Love that the tax and tip is already factored into the listed price and so payment is super easy. We had a great time and will return to try the spring tasting menu! Excited to have a local gem.

4.5STARS Me: «Can we go to Sous Beurre Kitchen for my last meal?» Mr. NSS: «‘Last’ meal?» Me: «Yah, my ‘last’ meal.» Mr. NSS: «Babe, you’re getting your wisdom tooth extracted NOT being executed…» Ok, so I was being a little dramatic but the last time I had my wisdom tooth extracted by Dr. Hyde, my face looked like a blowfish that got punched in the face, and I couldn’t talk or eat for a week. If the same thing was going to happen this time, I wanted to enjoy a damn good meal beforehand. After rescheduling our reservations 7 times(I’m sure I was on the reservationist’s last nerve), we finally made it to Sous Beurre Kitchen’s(SBK) brick and mortar which opened in early February. SBK started out as a pop-up in a café, and the chef only had a panini grill and a small oven with no grill or hood to work with. They’ve come a long way since then. SBK serves rustic French cuisine. They have two menus: a la carte or tasting menu($ 85). All prices listed on the menu include both tax AND tip. So what you see listed on the menu is what you pay out the door which I found very reasonable. No additional tip is accepted. Beer, wine, and loophole cocktails only. No hard booze. Our waiter recommended a great rose and a red which were just $ 9 and $ 10 a glass. * ~ * F O O D * ~ * I missed their February tasting menu with foie and uni(*sad pouty lip*) so we ordered a bunch of items a la carte to share. A P P S *Barren Point Oysters($ 3 each): *Chicken Liver & Heart Pâté Mousse($ 7): *Steak Tartare($ 12): *Wild Mushrooms En Croute($ 15): E N T R E E S *Duck Confit($ 23): *Bavette Steak Au Poivre($ 25): *Pacific Coast Bouillabaisse($ 25): D E S S E R T *Chocolate Buttermilk Glacee($ 8): The apps and entrees were composed of top notch ingredients, simply and classically prepared. For the most part, all the dishes were perfectly executed: well-seasoned(not too salty), well-balanced, and well-cooked(tender, moist meats). I had not one, not two but six favorite dishes: the fresh, meaty oysters, the velvety smooth pâté, the raw beefy goodness of a tartare, the richly flaky mushroom pot pie, the hearty cassoulet with crispy, tender duck confit, and finally, the carniwhore approved steak au poivre with duck fat potatoes! The bouillabaisse was my least favorite dish, not to say that it was bad though. It had fresh mussels and clams, and the black cod had a nice crisp skin but the crostini was burnt to a charcoal and masked with an aioli. The burnt taste lingered. Sadly, dessert was very disappointing. The chocolate glacee(ice cream) was served melty and was too bitter. The accompanying marshmallows were hard and gummy. * ~ * S E R V I C E * ~ * The staff was wonderful! Our waiter was warm, friendly, and attentive. The manager(?) delivered some of our dishes and checked in with us several times which was nice touch. Food service ran smoothly and efficiently until dessert which took 20 minutes to receive. * ~ * A M B I A N C E * ~ * Just like the food and service, the dining area is simple, warm, and rustic. Great for solo dining(chef’s table or sit at the bar), date night or a group dinner(one communal style table). * ~ * P A R K I N G * ~ * Difficult street parking. Be careful, some nearby streets are sketch at night so walk in pairs or a group. I now look like a blowfish that’s been punched in the left side of the face several times but at least, I had a damn good ‘last’ meal at SBK!
