I had the fish katsu and sashimi combination omg it was SOOO good !! The fish was fried perfectly, super tender and juicy. They give huge portions and the waiter is very nice always checking up on us.

Ordered tempura, sake shashimi, crazy roll, and taravel roll. All were good… except for the sake shashimi, it was realllly cold, not frozen, but firm and the rolls were on the small side. But then again, the prices weren’t that bad either. So you get what you pay for.

We came here at around 1 in the afternoon on a Saturday and they weren’t busy. We had so many tables to choose from, but by the time we were done(around 3), it was packed. The rolls here are pretty good! I will always come back here for more sushi. Their hamachi kama(fish neck) is so yummy! Don’t hesitate to try! It may be expensive and sound a little weird but you must try it!

Restaraunt has reasonable pricing, and food is average to good when it comes to sushi. BUTTHESERVICEISTERRIBLE, our waitress(older Asian lady) never made eye contact, barely waited for us to finish our sentence to turn around and run off and when our food was ready she literally left it at the corner of the table rudely and walked off while on the phone. Didn’t even place it in front of my guest I brought to dine with, and sitting in a four top table with just two people that was extremely noticeably rude. I highly Don’t recommend this place if looking for a good dining experience. Xo #SFFoodEnthusiast

The experience was okay, but they were super nice. I’m not sure if I would come back because the portions don’t match the prices, but the food tasted good.

Great atmosphere and owners, really appreciated the personal levels of approach when it came from the owner of the restaurant. The owner is an explosive gentlemen who makes you feel welcome, however I felt that the menu was not really well known by some of the staff. I had asked for Walu/Waru/Escolar/Butterfish and told it was not on the menu. Upon the arrival of my sashimi platter, chirashi, and rolls, the chirashi clearly had Butterfish. Quality of the sushi was actually amazing considering the price and having those little polaroid pictures and drawings around the restaurant helped kill the wait time. Will return soon, thank you for the experience!

I liked it. There was a steady flow of customers on a Sunday night. We had to wait about 3 minutes while they cleared the table. I thought they managed the flow well. The miso soup tastes like miso soup, so all good there. The sashimi platter looked nice, but it wasn’t the most flavor full. Definitely the low light of our meal. We got the philly roll, Hawaii roll, and the Alaska roll. All though not super impressive looking, good sized and all really tasty. very good avocado. We also got another roll I’ve forgotten the name of that had smoked salmon skin that was also very good and had a yummy teriyaki sauce on it. The smoked/charged salmon was particularly good. Very reasonable price. $ 45 for the lot.

It was good, nothing special. I was once told by a great chef, «You can always tell a good japanese restaurant by their miso.» Had I listened I would not have ordered another thing. Oh well you live and learn. They skimp on avocado, ordered extra avocado and had about 3 slices of a half. The rolls were very loose and kept falling apart. There was only 1 server but she tried. Unsure if I will return.

We originally tried to go to Tazaki for sushi but found it was closed for the christmas holiday which really sucked. I’m so happy it was closed or else we would have never tried Sushi Zen! Oh man… I can’t wait to go back. I ordered the bento box with fish katsu and sashimi. They give you 6 fat pieces of sashimi and even accommodated the fact that I don’t like red tuna. I got 2 yellowtail, 2 super white tuna, and 2 salmon. The fish katsu was also amazing. You can tell they used really fresh red snapper and a very light batter to make it super crispy. The fish itself was really light and so tender. I’ll definitely be back because this place has excellent quality and quantity for the money you spend.

4 stars for their lunch specials! This place brings me back to high school(go Mustangs!!) where we would travel long and far(lol) and up and down those hills… anything but high school cafeteria food or beanery right?!(just kidding, shout out to those chocolate chip cookies from the beanery!!) Their lunch bento box and sushi roll specials are awesome! They’re pretty big portions for the price. Their rolls can often have more rice portioned out than I would like, but it does the job to get that craving fix. This place is a pretty standard neighborhood Chinese-owned Japanese restaurant!

Amazing for some bomb-ass sushi rolls! Been at this joint a couple of times and everything was super impressive. This place definitely did me justice when I was craving yummy sushi. All the rolls I’ve tried have been ONPOINT! The following are the ones I’ve tried: –Crazy Sushi(crunchy texture made it AMAZING) –King Kong –Lazy summer roll(can I say Fresh?!) I’ve also tried the grilled squid with mayo… a must order when I’m there, I always crave it and they make it so good! Overall, this is my Go-To place for some awesome sushi when in the Sunset District. I always find a seat here and no wait. The service is great, so no complaints here!

Dinner time food was good. Sound was loud both inside the restaurant and outside(due to muni trains). Regular prices of sushi so relatively expensive. It is near the other sushi place up the block sushi raw. I have now been to both. I can not tell a major difference in quality.

A pleasant find in the Sunset/Parkside. I live in the area, but I never really noticed Sushi Zen until my friend sent me a snapchat one day. It’s a small place that seems a bit hidden away between the two neighboring buildings. I got a table for three during dinner time. I often check Unilocal reviews for food recommendations; sadly, the most popular suggestion was the LUNCH special. However, we did try the super dynamite roll as well as the winter wonderland roll. As far as specialty rolls go, both are priced very well for what they give you. I believe they were in the $ 7 – 9 range. From past dining experiences around the city, they could have easily charged $ 10+ for the rolls. Both rolls tasted fresh and were accompanied with delicious sauces drizzled on top. I personally liked the super dynamite roll a little more because it was spicy. Sushi Zen offers good quality at good pricing and I would love to try the lunch special one day. The restaurant has given me a brighter outlook on Sunset district Japanese food, masking years of eeehhh or mehhh from tastings around the area.

Typical sushi restaurant in San Francisco. The restaurant staff seemed annoyed whenever we waved our hand at them. I sat near the door and when the owner noticed my hand up, he screamed«CAN I HELPYOU?!» Sir, I’m not going to scream across the restaurant lol. Sushi Zen is a small restaurant but it seems like the waiters couldn’t handle their customers. They took over 10 minutes to give us our bill. Be aware that this place is located right next to the Metro, so don’t be surprised when your seat vibrates as a train passes by.

Went here with friends and ordered four rolls. Decent quality for the price($ 28) and the fish was relatively fresh. I would definitely recommend the rock n roll, the best out of the four. The eel in it was great. Overall, good place to get decent sushi at a reasonable price.

I came here for dinner, order some rolls and sashimi. We had the butterfish, which tasted extremely off. It was rubbery and fishy tasting, obviously not fresh. I asked the waitress to take the dish away as it was not edible. The owner comes out and tries to explain that the fish is fresh and that I don’t like it because I’m not use to the taste. Seriously? I’ve had sashimi all my life and plenty of fresh butterfish. I’ve never had butterfish taste so off that I had to spit out. As an owner, it’s rude to make it seem as if your customers don’t know what they’re talking about just cause your food isn’t fresh. The one star are for the waitresses that are very friendly and attentive. I wouldn’t come here ever again.

I came here sometime in 2013 and left unsatisfied, never wanting to come back here again. Couple days ago, I happened to stumbled in here again forgetting about my first experience. After stepping in and realizing which restaurant I was in, I decided to give it another chance. My bf and I ordered a couple of their special rolls and the uni sashimi. Rolls were okay, but the quality and color of the fishes seemed off and didn’t taste fresh. There was a piece of fish bone in one of the pieces that I ate which took me by surprise. The uni was light in color and looked bad. I took a small bite and it was foul and gritty, the most disgusting uni I ever tasted. We immediately told our server and with the chef’s permission, they took it away and didn’t charge us. I’m honestly surprised I didn’t get food poisoning from here, but I rather not risk it and will avoid this place. Let’s just hope I’ll remember next time.

I wish they have more dinner bento box options. I think all they had was tempura as the 2nd option? I like being able to choose either sashimi, california roll, or even another meat entrée for my 2nd choice. I was disappointed by that. BUT the guy who greeted me was super sweet and welcoming, he even gave us free ice cream on the house. Hmm… They might have better lunch menu, I will try that next time.

My go to sushi place! I hate how if you want good sushi it’s either too expensive or the wait is almost an hour. At Sushi Zen, that’s not the case. I don’t have to wait AND I can afford it. If you love salmon like I do, I recommend the Sunset Strip and the British Colombia roll. Those are definitely my favorites.(Around $ 11 each) Love unagi? The King Kong roll and the dragon roll are pretty good. They have decently priced lunch box and dinner specials as well that I have tried and liked. Overall, I don’t think you can go wrong with anything here. I will come back again and again to fix my sushi cravings.
