Worst experience ever! The server is very rude and racial discrimination. I stand behind my boyfriend in the line when we order food but the server ask me to go back to the end of the line. I was confused but he keep saying it’s my fault and refuse to apologize sincerely. I don’t understand. Is this some special tradition of America? I’ll never go to this place again. I wish I could give negative five stars but Unilocal don’t have that. I wish this won’t happens to other people because it sucks. And the food is not good.

This is cafeteria style! The food, is ok. The salad, well interesting. The steak, good, juicy, cooked well, the bread, ok, the potato wasn’t bad, its like $ 2.30 upcharge for the works on the potato. Drinks are NOT free refillable. If you want a decent meal, quick, and at place thats open late, this place isn’t that bad,

This place used to be my go to place for steak when I was in college here, it was still good 5 years ago. But just eating there again today it didn’t taste the same anymore for some reason, the steak still ok with the baked potato and garlic bread but everything tasted bland. It’s still an ok place if u want a good deal for steak(17 bucks for steak garlic bread baked potato and salad) and u r around the neighborhood and don’t want to wait in lines, but I would not travel there just for the food like I used to. If not bc of old time sake I’d have given this a 3 star. Feel a bit sad but time to move on lol.

«Okay» is the word that I can use to describe Tad’s most accurately. Having recently been working in San Francisco Union Square I was looking for something quick and easy that won’t break the bank. Quite honestly it was a little pricey($ 11 for a slightly burned grilled cheese and a small portion of fries) for what I got but this is in San Francisco. All and all the atmosphere was okay, but a bit messy with uncleaned tables, also quite loud as the sound seems to ricochet off the walls. It was very cafeteria style with trays you carry to your table, which isn’t always a bad thing(if your into it). The food was honestly just okay. I purchased lunch for my coworkers who all repeated the same«it’s okay» statement regarding their burgers/steaks. The only real complaint I had was that the dishes all came with a salad, which I declined instead for extra fries, and the fry portion I received was fairly small. Having said all of that the food was ready for my pickup within 10 minuets with hardly any wait time(regardless of was their lunch rush). All in all if your looking for a decent fast meal that won’t be too costly I would recommend it. However I would be cautious bringing anyone else there if they are looking for unique food or a quiet atmosphere.

I have had their Tads Steak dozens of times over the past 40 years. I have never tried their breakfast. I was in the neighborhood at 7:30AM and had the opportunity to try Tad’s for breakfast. They have a great early bird breakfast special for $ 8.99. The service was fast and the portions are ample. 2 pieces of toast of your choice, 2 eggs done perfectly and choice of meat plus the best home made breakfast potatoes in SF. Even the coffee was good. It takes you back to the 60’s. Unfortunately 2016 prices.

This place is great for a sit down, yet self-order diner. Had breakfast here twice and dinner once. For breakfast, there is a server that waits on you. But after 11am, it’s self-order. It has that family owned restaurant appeal which added to the welcoming atmosphere. I got the sourdough French toast for breakfast which was excellent! I had grilled cheese for dinner, which is pretty standard.

Plain steak and a joke of what they call garlic bread. Service was mediocre. The only good thing was the salad and the ranch dressing. Asked the cashier what he recommend, either the pork chop or the steak and he had no answer. No customer service skills.

I guess you get what you pay for. Came here looking for a cheaper steak but was still pretty unsatisfied. Steak was cooked unevenly and my garlic bread was cold when I got my plate. Probably wouldn’t come back but hey, I got steak, salad, garlic bread, and a baked potato for about fifteen dollars.

Went to Tad’s for a quick and easy lunch. Old school décor but kept clean. Staff was nice and the menu well exposed. Ordered the classic Tad’s burger with Cheese, bacon and fries. They give you a buzzer and call you once it’s ready. It took about 10 minutes for my order to be ready. Burger was ok, I asked for medium rare but it was more medium/well-done. Fries were ok but nothing to write home about. Overall a good place to go if you are on a rush and want a fairly priced /size lunch.

Meh. We were in the bay on thanksgiving looking for dinner. We wanted an Irish pub but all the options we found had a set overpriced holiday menu. We were short on time and looked around in the area we were in. The reviews here were decent and there was a check in offer so we decided to give it a shot. First off I know it’s thanksgiving but kick the hobo out. No hobo. I don’t enjoy being hassled INSIDE your restaurant. Ridiculous. This guy was standing inside the door asking everyone to buy him food. When he decided to touch me he’s lucky he didn’t get the crap kicked out of him. If we had time to go elsewhere we would have at this point. The guys ringing people up were pretty brash bordering on rude. I know it’s busy but the attitude seemed a bit excessive. The prices were a bit high if you ask me. This is a glorified diner. The salad was a joke, didn’t eat it. C’mon, at least try to make it appealing in some way. P.J.‘s fat burger @ $ 13.99 was tasty but not worth the price. The turkey & swiss cheese melt @ $ 9 was mediocre. It was fairly tasteless. I think if they added tomatoes and grilled onions it would be much better. The fact that they give you a buzzer and you pick up your own food at the counter and seat yourself gives this place more of a fast food/deli feel than a restaurant. The prices should reflect this imho. I did not try any of the steaks but from what I saw I wouldn’t have one here, I’m way too picky. This isn’t a bad choice but with all the other options in this price range around I’d likely go elsewhere.

Cruising SF looking for a cool dinner spot with 4 friends from out of town… I thought this place looked good so we tried it. Wasn’t what I expected(you order and pay at the counter then they call your number/buzz your pager when your dinner is ready)… But it was good. I don’t need ultra-classy and I don’t mind if my wine comes out of a box though so, if you do, this is not this place for you. Considering SF prices, this was a good meal for the money and conveniently located close to Bart. I’d go back.

I love coming here… My grandparents would sometimes come here on dates, so when i come in it gives me a warm happy feeling. Its nothing fancy but just a great place if youre looking for a bite to eat. Tad’s steak is what i usually order at around $ 16 – 17 bucks. Some say that its not that great but whenever i visit my steak is always cooked super juicy and seasoned awesome. Comes with a baked potato and side salad. The salad is really the only crappy part it usually tastes a little old and wilted. You order at the register and when your buzzer goes off you go and pick up your food. Menu is pretty small too! Breakfast is only served till 12pm.

Came here for their steak as I got off work. I ordered medium rare. The steak wasn’t as juicy as I expected. It was a bit dry and actually tasted more like a pork chop to me as I chew on it. You can order add ons as well to the steak such as mushrooms but it would cost more.

I first ate here in 1971… and the place now is totally different. Workers seem not to friendly,…when I went to pick up my food at the counter, employee was on her cell phone. The food wasn’t that great; you get a flat garlic bread, over cooked baked potato, and it seems like a cheap slab of steak on the plate with no free refills. Definitely not the same Tads Steakhouse I remembered from before. It’s like a cheap fast food restaurant with cheap food that doesn’t live up to standards. I guess that’s why it is not that expensive. You get what you pay for.

Tad’s is a chain restaurant for an average Joe to have an average meal at average cost. If you’re looking for quality cut steak, obviously, don’t come here and then complain on Unilocal afterwards. If you can afford the $ 45 steaks, then go elsewhere. My $ 16.95 steak was cooked and seasoned perfectly and I ate everything on my plate. It was a cheap way to eat some meat while I was touring around the area. Service was good. You line up, order, pay, then take the buzzer to your table and wait for the food. An upscale fast food joint, if you will. Go only if you’re on a budget and you need some hearty meal without breaking the bank.

Straight from the chefs mouth… as my husband and I were waiting in line to place our food order, there was a conversation going on in Spanish between the chef and his co workers. I typically do not eaves drop, but I’m a Hispanic woman, and was able to understand what they were saying and was instantly interested. Let me tell you… it was not a conversation that I wanted to over hear, especially right before I was placing my order :(They said«este gente le gustan mierda». Which means, «these people like to eat shit». Oh yes, that’s just what I was looking for, NOT! Oh, and I witnessed one of the bussers in the back opening ketchup bottles with his teeth. A word to the owner… find a new staff that does not disparage your establishment. And make sure they understand all of the sanitation rules in the food industry. The steak was under seasoned and the bread was flat as a pancake and greasy. BOO!

My aunt and I found ourselves at Tad’s Steakhouse around noon after wandering Powell St. for a half hour(our hotel was in the proximity). I have to say, it is far better looking inside than it is out. My overall experience there was pleasant. Both our meals(I ordered the hamburger steak with a side of a baked potato) came up to roughly $ 30. Might be a little on the semi-pricey side but the portion sizes were quite large(we also ordered two drinks so that contributed to the price). Nothing out of the ordinary in terms of the food. It was enjoyable but not anything wow worthy. Food did arrive fairly fast(under 5 minutes) considering how busy it was, that was impressive. 3.5÷5

Do you know what despair smells like? Would you like to? Can you imagine a world where cheap, questionable meat is served up on plastic cafeteria trays? Would you want to anyway? What’s in a name? Does a restaurant being famous for its longevity deserve further legacy? Will its tenure outweigh the quality of the food? Does continued existence trump flavor? Is that small bowl of iceberg lettuce with shards of carrot and purple cabbage with a ramekin of ranch worth $ 3? What’s worse, a cow perishing only to be served up as a slab of poorly prepared broiled meat on a cheap plate, or a chicken ending its life tasting of something not quite chicken? In fact, is that some sort of fuel I taste on my chicken? Isn’t everything not pork or beef or fish supposed to taste like chicken, especially chicken? Why didn’t my chicken taste like chicken? What gives? Why did I even come here? Was it for the prices? For the namesake? Or simply for the convenient proximity to my hotel? Do I question the overall reviews of this joint on Unilocal? I will answer that one last question: YES.

My wife and I just attended a great performance at the San Francisco Silent Film Festival(The Donovan Affair(1929 Frank Capra that had the dialog done by live actors!) and decided to ride a historic trolley car downtown for some dinner. As we approached Powell street, I recalled Tad’s Steakhouse, just a block from the trolley stop. I had last been there 5 years ago and recalled that it was pretty good, so we decided to try it. It is a classic establishment, founded in the 1950s. The open kitchen has been modernized; the restaurant still has that old fashioned cafeteria atmosphere. You place your order at the counter and then they give you a buzzer, which will notify you when your order is ready to pick up at the counter and take back to your table(self-service). The first thing that I noticed is that the prices seem to have doubled in the past few years.(But then meat has recently gotten much more expensive). Overall, the prices are not really expensive for steak. However, you get what you pay for. We each ordered the TAD’s Famous Steak($ 16.49) which is cooked to order and comes with a salad, garlic bread, and a baked potato. Each topping is an extra charge. Cheese, Bacon, Sour Cream on the potato is an extra $ 2.30, just sour cream and cheese on the potato is an extra $ 1.05. Grilled mushrooms on the steak add an extra $ 1.00 and are worth it. The small salad is very ordinary. The garlic bread is thin, but tasty. The potato was very dry. It is a good thing that we had potato toppings to give it some much needed moisture. We both ordered our steaks cooked medium rare. My wife’s was very good; she said that it was tender and flavorful. On the other hand, mine, while cooked properly medium rare, was more tough and not very flavorful. I was not impressed(hence the 3 star rating). Overall, it was quick and convenient, but the food could be better.

It’s been quite awhile since I’ve been to a San Francisco steak house. I was on my way to Blondies for a slice of pizza when I walked past Tad’s and had to stop in. It’s basically fast food steak. You can watch them grill out for you! I loved places like this when I was a kid and lived here and nothing has changed. I ordered Tad’s Famous Steak and I wasn’t disappointed. I asked for medium rare and that’s what I got. It was tender, juicy and perfectly seasoned. It came with a little tossed salad, a baked potato and a good sized slab of garlic toast. I added on grilled onions and mushrooms which were also quite good. The restaurant itself is clean and spacious. Even the restroom was nice and clean. From the outside it looks like a dive but it’s certainly worth coming in. I recommend Tad’s for both the food and the experience. It’s a San Francisco tradition.

Kann man machen. Muss man aber nicht. Mc Donalds flair.
