Got ourselves some empanadas, the staff is great and so is the food. Small seating area(about 20). They have guava juices and watermelon(plus others). The sauces are a great addition to your empanadas and would recommend the basil/cilantro one.

Everything is good about this place except the huge queue during lunch. Tacos, tamales, enchiladas. You name it ! They bring fresh n warm chips out to the table during lunch. Their bar is also pretty good at margaritas although a tad expensive. Go late during lunch hours if you can to beat the queues.

We arrived around 330PM on a Saturday and the place is set up like this: you walk in, read a large menu on the wall, order your food, pay for it, sit down and wait for it to arrive via a food runner. I’m not sure if this set up changes for dinner. That said, Tropisueño was great! We were a little confused on the ordering process at first but one of the workers quickly told us what was up. The food came out quickly and was delicious. I had the beef enchiladas and my boyfriend had the chicken quesadilla, both were great! You also get a bowl of tortilla chips when you sit at a table. I would recommend Tropiseuño if you want very casual Mexican food with fast service.

Came here at 7:30, ordered food then waited an hour and a half for it to arrive. ONTOPOFTHAT, only half of us got food. After waiting for a full two hours, we finally were able to flag down our waitress to ask about our order. She had not come to check on us since taking our orders. We then found out our order was not filled because their printer broke down. Then they still made us pay for drinks. This was terrible.

After checking out a pop-up Etsy fair we stopped here for a bite to eat. My bestie and I were thrilled to see it was GOOD! Honestly it wasn’t 5 stars good but a consistent«if I am ever in the area again I’ll eat here again» good. I had the combo platter with a chicken taco and cheese enchilada. The taco was more authentic with cabbage, meat, and onions(no onions for me). The enchilada was great. The typical beans and rice accompaniment went well. The chips were going to be the death of us though lol. My bestie loved her meal but she DID say she was so hungry a leather boot probably would have been ok that point. I believe she had a combo plate as well. I’m rarely in SF but if ever in the area again, I’d like to come back and try their build your own taco bar. Now, it was kinda loud and dinner service does NOT start until 5:30. So an early dinner is not possible. Keep that in mind when making plans!!! I dont see how this place could disappoint other than the hours issues :)

Overall, a good experience except for the fact that their happy hour, which they advertise on their website as going from 4−6pm, actually ends at 5:45pm. If your last call for happy hour is at 5:45, then put on the website that it ends at 5:45! It was super frustrating to get there trying to make happy hour, only to have no one help us for 10 minutes, then be told that happy hour is over. The service was pretty poor, although that can be forgiven with our large group. The food and ambience was great, and free chips and salsa is always a plus.

Surprisingly good and fast. There was a huge line but it moves fast, they are a smooth running operation. One friend held a table while the rest of us waited maybe 10 min. I rodered a chicken quesadilla with everything and the chicken was grilled, moist and delicious. Maybe one of the best I’ve ever had. Can’t comment on the rest but everyone enjoyed their food. Definitely a lunch time FiDi type place.

I’m guessing most of the great reviews are for lunch. I went for dinner on a Friday. I was busy, but I counted 15 tables for two severs. Needless to say, they forgot stuff, it was almost impossible to get water, etc. Chips and salsa were pretty good. I got the house salad, which was huge. I ate like half. The dressing needed to be better, but was fresh. My entrée was totally unimpressive. Their rice tastes like dirty dish water. Retried beans are runny and just taste odd. The enchilada tasted off and the steak was unseasoned and tough. I’ll never be back.

Hip atmosphere and friendly staff. A few friends and I had a great time over chips, guac, and authentic Mexican food. This restaurant is in a quirky walkway between two busy streets but it was very easy to find. It gets busy during lunchtime as it’s next to many office buildings. Dinner, too, can get busy. But definitely worth the wait! I’m coming back.

YAAAAAS Ok, the lowdown is that you order your food, cafeteria style, and then brawl it out for a table. This place was PACKED when I went, and none of the reviews I had read talked about how this place is run. I had the pollo tinga in my taco and it was SOGOOD. SOFLAVORFUL. I almost didn’t need to put one of their various sauces from the super awesome sauce bar. I will say that they are a little disorganized — they served my vegetarian aunt a chicken tostada, forcing me to then go vy for the cashier’s attention to get that fixed.

Just went to tropiseueno yesterday, and after being away for a year was still very impressed with them! Service is top notch, the second you sit down from counter service you get a very friendly worker bringing a bowl of fresh made tortilla chips where you can HELPYOURSELF to a fully loaded salsa bar, and… Wait for it, endless cut limes! Dying. We got: torta Milanesa(3⁄5)−− meat was hard as a rock. Carne asada street tacos(5⁄5)−− just add lots of lime. Shrimp burrito(5⁄5)−− it truly is as big as your face! Carne asada burrito supreme(5⁄5)−− again, your face! They also have amazing outdoor seating, it’s right near union square but far enough so you’re not trampled by angry shoppers looking for the next sale as you eat.

Nice chips, salsa — not as great as chevys, decent service. Guacamole is very overpriced for what you get. Dishes were not clean, wait time for dinner was 20 minutes at 8PM. Appetizers were not substantial, very much like tapas. Enchiladas were mediocre at best. Overall, pricey and not worth the trip. Oh, and lollipops at the end were probably the highlight of the meal.

Came in recently to order my staple Super Shrimp Burrito and saw that they serve everything in plastic food bags now! These bags, filled with your toppings, simmer in metal bins all day, releasing all that plastic goodness into your food so it can go into your body! Awesome! I order shrimp because it’s cooked to order. The other meats are pre-prepared. Imagine how good it would taste if it was all grilled to order… The salsas keep me hooked. The hot orange one is a truly unique salsa that sets it apart from any other taqueria, although I’ve noticed it seems to get more watered down with each batch and the consistency changes from time to time. I wonder if they’re trying to improve it or sabotage it… Still, it’s the only burrito place around my work, so I have to go here for my fix once a week. That food served in warmed plastic irks me though…

What a darling spot for Mexican food, outdoor seating, bar and an open counter for salsa dips! Their fresh chips are delightful with the salsa selections that you can pair it with. I took favor in their generous portion of Albondigas. A homely soup wth plentiful chunks of meatballs in it. Share it because there are other delectable entrees on the menu to choose from as well. Chile Relleno was mightily feasible. Tacos were of the norm. Nice layout and spot here.

I was hoping to have a better experience after reading the reviews prior to coming in for dinner. My dinner was nothing impressive and my margarita was full of ice. I ordered chips and guacamole which wasn’t too bad but when I ordered my chicken with rice and beans I honestly didn’t get much taste from any of it. The chicken seemed dry and not enough meat just mostly bones. The staff is very friendly and helpful so that’s a good thing. Not sure I would come back after having a meal with a lack of taste.

The fresh guacamole was very good. They have a salsa bar which we enjoyed! Try the green salsa, man, that’s some good ass salsa! They serve micheladas(it’s like mexican bloody mary’s?) which are very good while having authentic Mexican food :)

LOVE this place… been going there kind of regularly for the past year and the service is always great, drinks are great, atmosphere is great! It is A MUST for Happy Hour! It can get a little crowded(as most popular places in SF) no matter what day it is, so plan ahead. My dad, who is not a Mexican food lover tried some take out I brought to him and he said it was the best Mexican food he has tasted — this coming from a man who is VERY picky says alot. If you haven’t tried this place ever, you HAVE got to go! If you have tried it, you MUST love it and you gotta go again :) If you have tried it and didn’t have a good experience, remember everyone has an off night(eventhough I have not experienced this there at least in the past year that I have been going there) so go back and give it another shot! Their house margarita is my favorite margarita, but all of their drinks are really good and not too strong or too light — JUSTRIGHT. The server/bartender Tony is my absolute favorite staff person there… super sweet, attentive and always has such fun positive energy. Most of the staff there even remember my «usual» LOL — makes me feel right at home. Prices are pretty standard/comparable for the area and lots of fun SF places around to enjoy after dinner and drinks.

This was a fantastic find. Just steps out the back exit from Marriott Marquis, close to Yerba Buena gardens and MOMA. The guacamole is excellent albeit a little small. The chips are light and crunchy and not too oily. The salsa bar is impressive with quite a selection. The food was quite good. The carne asadas were solid. The mole was pretty good. The kids quesadillas were good. The fish taco came out soggy… that was the only negative. Order at the front and find a seat. They food comes out pretty quickly.

I recall when Tropisueno’s doors opened in this windy lane. Initially, I dismissed it as another trendy upscale Mexican restaurant with upscale prices. Eventually I noticed that Tropisueno consistently draws a crowd. So I gave in to curiosity and ended up having dinner here. The ambience is surprisingly impressive. The venue is well-kept and very clean, yet somewhat rustic with some raw wood accents. There are also a few alcoved booths with curtains for a bit of privacy. It is a rather large space with an expansive bar and an exposed kitchen. It didn’t feel spacious at the time, because it was a full house. They offer outdoor seating, but Yerba Buena Lane catches a lot of cross-wind, so I imagine those seats are only occupied on warm days. We were presented with menus and complimentary chips and salsas. The chips were served warm, not too oily, thin and crisp. They were accompanied with a trio of salsas, which included what I believe was a spicy chili salsa, salsa verde, and a habanero mayo-looking one. Surprisingly, the orange-colored habanero-mayo salsa was our favorite due to its creaminess. Usually, salsa verde is my favorite. There is also a salsa bar, but I completely overlooked it, because everything was juicy and flavorful. We completely polished these off while waiting for our entrees. Entrees come with Mexican rice, tortillas, and beans. We chose black & refried beans. $ 16 Pollo Asado — grilled chicken on bone, zucchini, mushrooms, squash, peppers: The plate includes an entire chicken leg. A very thin crust formed on the outside, covering some very juicy thigh meat. It sat on top of the zucchini, squash, and peppers, which were delicious, but just a touch soggy. Even the black beans and rice were tasty filler items. $ 17 Tampiqueno — Niman ranch beef, thin-cut grilled carne asada, w/beef barbacoa enchilada, guacamole: The carne asada was juicy and full of flavor from the meat juices and intense seasoning. It was topped with uncut grilled scallions. The enchilada was covered in tangy salsa and queso fresco. The Mexican rice and refried pinto beans were topped with a scoop of guacamole, and absorbed some of the beef juices as well. Everything was excellent. I just wish it had a little bit more guac. Since dining here and enjoying the food, I feel enticed to possibly return for lunch or happy hour. The menu is a little different and prices are more affordable. For lunch, the restaurant operates as a taqueria-style cafeteria. Margaritas, ceviche, and tostadas for happy hour sounds pretty good, too.

Fun, lively atmosphere with cheap prices. I was expecting it to be a little upscale for lunch based on photos but it was very casual. You order at the front, pick your own table, and the servers will bring your food along with a bowl of warm chips to you. There’s a large variety of salsas that you can serve yourself. I got the super quesadilla with carne asada($ 9). It was packed with delicious cheese and large enough serving size I could only eat half of it. It was amazing! My boyfriend got the super burrito with carnitas($ 10). The meat was so savory and tasted great with chunks of pineapple. Overall I’d definitely recommend this place!

The service is always good, but the food is always lackluster. Came here with a friend who wanted to try this place. I knew from a prior experience that it was so-so that time, so I wasn’t hopeful. With good reason. The portions of some dishes are smallish, many of the flavors just not authentic tasting. The drinks are good, at least there’s that. Music can be too much at times.

Visited this place for my second time last night on a busy Tuesday. I left the restaurant somewhat disappointed. Mostly disappointed in the food. Food: I was so disappointed in the food :((please note that this called for a sad face) We walked in here expecting amazing Mexican food, but it was mediocre. The salsas all tasted the same. Maybe my tastebuds are broken. The taco was just okay. The enchilada was also just okay. I guess what we paid didn’t seem to be worth what we got. Enchilada/Taco plate…12.95 Pinot Noir glass…11 Tampiqueno…17 Corona…6 ~$ 60 with Tax/Tip/SF Surcharge Service: The service was great. They’re always busy during dinner time so I knew we’d have a wait. They take reservations but can only make them online. I accidentally canceled my reservations, so we had to wait for about half an hour for a party of two. The hostess and are server were both very friendly and accommodating. Our server tried making small talk with me which showed a lot of effort on her part, most servers don’t really take the time to do so. Atmosphere/Location: Driving to downtown is always a pain. But parking at the 5th and Mission garage makes things a bit more bearable. Tropisueño has a very fun/laid back vibe, with latin music blasting at full force, and everyone chatting it up. It’s somewhat on the smaller side so it has a cozy feel to it.

Tropisueno ruined my expectation for chips & salsa! I can never see them and taste them the same way I did! And my self-control had been seriously tested.(It failed.) It is valued and delicious eat in the middle of downtown SF, I heard it is also a good and efficient spot for lunch. Truly best chips and salsa, and it is free and unlimited! We came on a busy Friday happy hour, very crowded but the outside seat was nice. Ordered nachos and it was really delicious and huge! After happy hour, we ordered chicken soup and a combo plate to share. The portion was gigantic – or maybe we just ate too much chips and salsa: P The cocktail Jamaicazo is AMAZING!!! The alcohol wasn’t too strong, which to some might be bad, but for a lightweight like me I LOVEIT. It was also really refreshing! Now I keep thinking about those chips & salsa… need to go back again! I will gladly run 10 miles just so I can stuff 3 bowls of them next time.

I’ve had Tropisueno bookmarked for awhile so I was really looking forward to finally trying them out. There weren’t any reservations available through their website at the time we wanted but we ended up getting a table at 7:00 p.m. on a busy, Wednesday night. The food and ambiance is easily 5STARS — I enjoyed everything about my house margarita, the carne asada tacos I ordered, and I loved the whole vibe and décor. However, what left much to be desired was the service. I know we didn’t have a reservation, and that the restaurant was busy, but we were told by the hostess that they needed our table for a 8:15 p.m. reservation and that we would have to be done by then. I have NEVER been told this at any restaurant and was amazed at how aloof the hostess was about the whole thing. I was having dinner with an old friend and didn’t want to rush with dinner, but I honestly felt like our whole experience there was totally rushed. Will I be back? Possibly — I did enjoy the food and drinks and it wouldn’t be fair to not give Tropisueno another chance, but it’ll be difficult to not keep this first experience in mind.

I was meeting an out-of-town friend for a low budget early dinner. He lives in Chicago and loves Mexican food(his wife does not). It was between going here and going to Don Pistos(I have never been to either). This was closer to my office and near his meeting so we got there at about 4:50pm on a Wed. night. The hostess took my cell number and said there were a lot of reservations and she wasn’t sure if we would get seated at 5:30 when they open the dining room for dinner(but no problem at all as it turns out). We squatted at the bar and had a couple margaritas(good but too much ice, the salt they used is a bit smoky and good). We were served some of their thin, delicious and WARM chips and a trio of salsas. The service was a little spotty at the bar — we had to ask a few times to get some water –and the bar quickly filled up. I got a text at 5:30 on the nose and we were seated. The waitress(Crystal) «explained«the specials, not sure what kind of country bumpkins usually eat here, but I do not need an explanation of «Chile con Queso», but she was off and describing it as melted cheese, etc, etc. My friend had the ½ chicken and loved it enough to say if he ever came back he would get it again. I got a combo plate of a chili Colorado enchilada and a chicken tinga flauta. Cyrstal suggested the green sauce for my enchilada(I had ordered it with Mole) I THOUGHT we agreed to go with her suggestions but a small taste of the mole on the side(that is not how it turned out — I got the Mole and no taste of the green sauce). What was weird was that a lot of the food around us was coming out very quickly and being served by workers with disposable bright purple gloves on — it was just weird, and not so appealing(our food was not served by purple gloved hands). Frankly the happy hour food coming out at the bar looked better, so that is what I will do next time. My food was good but not hot. I didn’t see the bill.(Thanks Keith!)

Also nichts für’s romantische Date.

Miam miam miam. One sentence in English: I would fly back to San Francisco just to eat all the barbacoa tacos I could fit in my belly and then I would get some to go because in America we can.
