Do you enjoy saying hello to people only to have them stare back at you blankly? Come to West Portal! Do you enjoy the likely possibility of getting hit by a car while out on a stroll? Come to West Portal — Drivers love to accelerate into you as you are in the cross walk! Have a dog? Well great — the friendly people of West Portal love to come running out of their houses to tell you not to have your dog poop on government own land — as you stand there with the poop picked up in a bag! Walk your dog in the busy city street say the fine people of West Portal! Yay West Portal! People here suck, are living in another era, have no idea what kindness is, and need to get off their high horse. This place is lame by SF standards.

If you live in the sunset chances are you’ve taken the L muni to here then onward to the city. If your picking someone up best to come down off Taraval and park alongside the library away from the trains.

This is an amazing small off the beating path neighborhood. One of many that make SF so great. If you want variety and diversity in food and culture this neighborhood has it. From restaurants to bakeries to desserts and yes its got a Starbucks. Add in banks, salons, dry cleaners, comic book, toy, local mom and pop shops and other stores right on West Portal Ave. You spend months eating at the different places here and not get bored/tired of the food variety. Spending almost 3 decades bouncing in and out of the area I have noticed that there is so many people from different back rounds that come through this area. West Portal Station is a large hub for people in this and surrounding neighborhoods to head downtown. For many this is a gateway to into other neighborhoods like the Sunset, Ingleside, St Francis Woods via the Muni. You can get from Stonestown to downtown on one train. Also if you know this neighborhood well it can lead you into shorts cuts(through other districts) to the freeway and other parts of the city taking«side streets» and avoiding the traffic and busier areas. Now living here isnt the cheapest but also not the most expensive in the city. Since this neighborhood isnt huge its very easy to walk around in. Parking is the only issue like with many SF neighborhoods. This place doesnt have a great night life or is the tourist must see but a small quiet relaxing neighborhood with great food(some of my favorite Sushi, Pizza and Chinese places are located here) minus the chaos of traffic that can happen sometimes. PS Yes Ann S. I am taking your advice about writing more about the city.
