I come here frequently for their dim sum. Even though the shop is a hole in the wall, it seriously is the BEST dim sum around. I don’t even go to dim sum restaurants anymore. This place satisfies my cravings every time. Their xiu mai and shrimp dumplings are a little bigger than what most restaurants serve so I get pretty full off of two orders. They also have really good milk tea for only a buck something. Oh and their onion bread is really good too!

Haven’t been here for a few years because my memory of this place was mediocre at best, but to my surprise, the dim sum was delicious! It was soft, tasty, and meaty. Just the way I like it!

My go to place for takeout dim sum.
This small Asian bakery has large section of good dim sum, and other Chinese breakfast/​brunch food items. You can’t beat the price. And everything is always freshly made.
A warning though: I always end up leaving with more food than I plan for. For a lot of items, they have a buy two get one free, or buy four get one free. Anytime you purchase that item, they remind you that buying another piece will get you get a second piece free. I end up always saying yes. It’s not really a bad problem having a little extra.
If you’re ever in the mood in the mood for dim sum, and would like to skip the bustle of the restaurant, and flagging servers down, and this is the place to go.

Just ordered a bunch of stuff and as I was paying, peeked into the kitchen… I just can’t bring myself to take the chance to eat what I bought. Not this time.

Hole in the wall Chinese dim sum to go shop. Really good price. This is my go to shop for cocktail buns, Chinese donuts, shrimp dumplings. The rest is mediocre Chinese dim sum food.

I was craving dim sum. I’ve had New Hwong Kok bookmarked for some time, so I decided to finally drop by to pick up some food. It was Saturday, September 26^th at 11:30am. I grabbed take out for lunch.
I love variety, so I had a hard time narrowing down what I wanted. Good thing there was a lady in front of me that kept asking questions and adding to her order. It gave me time to decide on what I wanted.

15. Sticky rice bun: one bag 2 roll ($ 2.90) — although their sign says $ 6.80?

Everything was solid. The dumplings are a good size, so you feel like you’re getting your money’s worth. Lots of shrimp in the ha gow (shrimp dumpling) and ha cheong (steamed shrimp crêpe). The shu mai was meaty. The sin zuk gyun (bean curd meat roll) and wu gok (fried taro cake) were huge! I have fond memories of eating sticky rice buns as a little girl, so these were definitely comforting. I ordered a shark fin dumpling out of curiosity. Not sure if it’s the same type of dumpling they use for the soups, but there’s not shark fin in it. It’s just meaty.
If there’s no time to actually go out and yum cha, this is a good alternative. Especially on a lazy morning.

Really cheap and pretty delicious dim sum. Tastes pretty good and while you know the quality isnt the absolute best, it definitely does the trick to satiate a dim sum craving at a really good price.

New Hwong Kok in S.J. is slightly different than the other location. menu is also in vietnamese and the staff speaks it also. milk tea is also in the house.

Considering that this place is a hole in the wall and the prices are CHEAP, it’s a good place for a quick dim sum fix. There’s people solely rating this place on their milk tea, and their $ 0.50 increase on the tea. And I have to say that’s ridiculous and unfair to this RESTAURANT business (aka it’s not a milk tea shop)

I’ve been coming here since it’s opened, and it’s always a great snack. They have a large assortment of dimsum, soups, and porridges. My favorite items are the shrimp tofu and ragoons. Their milk tea on the side is a nice extra since it’s only $ 1.50.

I always went here back in high school to get their dollar milk tea. Dollar milk tea and dim sum never disappoints.
I never ate here properly but today I came in with my best friend for brunch. We were definitely not disappointed. We shared an order of chow fun, crab rangoon and deep fried shrimp crescents with milk tea. In the end we were extremely stuffed.
Everyone keeps complaining about the price change with the milk tea but personally I don’t mind. They need to be making money somehow and it’s not like the milk tea is terrible. The milk tea is actually really decent for its price.

MILK TEA REVIEW. 4 years ago when I was in high school, this was literally THE place to be. No job = no money so the dollar milk tea here was our life all the time. The milk tea was definitely worth the dollar, comparable to any other boba place’s plain milk tea. Nothing too special, but it got our cravings fulfilled. However recently I’ve gone back and their tea is definitely a lot different. For one, they had a bunch of them already made and stored in a fridge, so when we ordered, she opened the fridge and handed it to us instantly. I can’t describe the taste of it, but it just wasn’t working… + they raised it to $ 1.50, not a huge change, but no one likes carrying that extra 50 cents. I haven’t tried anything else here, honestly but would probably come to try their dim sum items.

Longest line for dimsum ever! Downside if you have hungry diabetics with you. Yeah their food is way better than the one we go to in Capitol Avenue but this is just ridiculous. Prolly I would enjoy it better if it wasnt too far from where I live. The drive and then the line just killed it for me.

Changed my mind by 360°. Love this place! Delicious deals. Service could be better but its not so bad that stars have to be deducted.

I love this place for its efficiency. Typically, you can only find dumplings and pastries of this size and price in San Francisco. Great flavors, and texture. You can order a la cart, but you can also order by meal combos.
This place doesn’t have the best ambiance for eating in, but its manageable (three tables inside, and two outside).
Pro-​tip: Order extra to go so you can snack on it later.
Pro-​tip: Credit card use is $ 10 minimum.

$ 2.75 per order. At least that was the cost per item for Tess and I. Gavin was sound asleep in his stroller.
I trekked all the way to East San Jose because we wanted dim sum and I need a place that accepts Visa/​MC. I did go to a dim sum restaurant but the line was out the door so this was the next best thing.
Don’t expect friendly service here. Don’t expect cleanliness being the priority here. If you speak Chinese then you are golden but I don’t speak the language so I relied on pointing and saying the names of what we wanted in Vietnamese.
The egg rolls were terrible. They were greasy and cold. The shrimp balls did not taste great. Maybe because they were held in a tray w/​o a heat lamp? It was crunchy but it sure tastes rather old… the shrimp and beef rice roll (banh cuon) was delicious. The sauce that came w/​it reminded me of Kowloon in Milpitas. The dumplings (har gow and siu mai) were plumped and savory.
I would not drive out of my way but if I was in the area and craving dim sum, I know this place would satisfy my cravings.

I just got back from grabbing #2 porridge and dim sum. The chives dumpling was bad smell very bad I couldn’t even eat my meal with it on the side of box. I had to get up and toss it in the trash right away. Boo
Used to always go here and the Milpitas one but I will go Tai pan more often now since the quality has gone down at hwongkok

The Milpitas location is my parents go-​to spot for won tons. I was glad to see they had another outpost in San Jose to serve a different city.
The strip mall location is very casual and reminiscent of other dim sum/​BBQ spots like Tai Pan or Dim Sum King. I ordered some dim sum but mainly stopped by to order their frozen won tons ($ 6.50 for 20).
My parents say that the Milpitas location’s won ton has more shrimp but either way they make a good and quick meal. Prices are better than Tai Kee and while the won ton skins are not quite as silky smooth, they’re full of pork.
I’ve taken frozen trays on plane flights and arrived on the other end, boiled some water and had a great pick me up meal after air travel fatigue. WIN.
New Hwong Kwok accepts credit cards but not American Express.

I only come here for the tapioca milk teas for $ 1.50, which comes with the jelly balls, and it is super delicious.
I haven’t tried other items, but they also sell chowmein, egg rolls, buns, egg tarts, and a bunch of other stuff.
Parking: located in a plaza so plenty of parking

How do I rate this? Well, if you compare it to a sit down Dim Sum joint, I don’t believe the food will match up. It’s not at that standard. But if you were craving dim sum and wanted it quickly, what’s not to like about a take-​out dim sum place like this? It’s cheap and they offer a variety of options.
I usually ask for one of the «lunch» combos (even though I order much later than lunch time. For about $ 6, I get SO MUCH food. Their pork, preserve egg porridge is usually pretty decent (though the last time I had it, it had a burnt taste.). I like their xiu mai and crab ragoon. Their chicken feet. is just ok. They offer milk tea for about $ 1.50 but it’s not my favorite so I skip.
The ladies are pretty nice (helps that I speak Vietnamese with a smile on my face).
