I actually really liked this place, a bit on the pricy side for adding more things on top of your sandwich though. I got the pepperoni cheesesteak and it is was really good. The cashier was an indian lady who also cooked up our sandwiches and asked if we wanted the sweet peppers and onions, no peppers for me! A really nice place for a quick bite to eat if you’re an SJSU student. They also have daily specials as well, they only took cash back then fyi. Parking downtown is never fun either, I guess I’ll have to find a better cheesesteak shop now as good as this location):

Not very good… Just a lot of meat and cheese. Go across the street and get something better. Service is kinda odd… made me think this isn’t just a cheese steak join if you catch my drift… Also made my housemate sick. Not great not even good not even enjoyable. Its closer to a subways idea of a cheesesteak than anything

1. They stay open til 3am thurs/fri and sat nights 2. They have lunch specials 3. They have the best cheesesteak hands down, warm break soft juicy steak, melted cheese and onions. The best cheese steak I have ever had in teh bay area. 4. their fries are very similar to mcdonalds fries. CHECKTHISPLACEOUT, better late night food than La Vics book it.

This was just a weird experience. We had a coupon here so we decided to try it before I had to get on Caltrain Sunday around 4:45pm. They have a big screen TV which was BLARING(no one in the place except the grill guy). We ordered a 8″ bbq cheesesteak«we are out of bbq sauce» So I switch to ordering a Pizza cheesesteak«we are outta marinara sauce»(Mind you there are only about 7 flavors of cheesesteak on the menu, and those 7 include Plain!) so we order 2 mushroom cheesesteaks(I braced for«we are outta mushrooms) BUT finally YATZEE we figured out an order that would work. The guy was real chill about prepping our order(he had to find exactly what he wanted to watch on TV before starting to cook the order, this took about 5 minutes — he didn’t know I had a train to catch) . The area is kinda sketchy. The cheesesteak comes with fries and was actually decent. Not the best I ever had, but better than some. the 8» steak seemed quite large and the fries were crispy. I doubt I’ll be back, but in the end it was a good deal for buy one get one free.

I parked in front of The Cheese Steak Shop and saw Philly Style across the street and decided to check it out. The whiteboard outside gave Today’s Special of 8″ Cheese Steak, Fries, and Soda for $ 7.99. Regularly the 8″ is $ 7.75. I went with the special, but in addition to cheese steaks they also have decent prices on cold hoagies($ 4 for a 6″, $ 6.50 for 12″), burgers($ 6.50 for Cheeseburger & Fries), and wings($ 5.99 for 6 wings & fries). About 10 minutes later(there was one order in front of mine) I got my food( ) which had a pretty generous stack of fries. The Cheese Steak was pretty darn good( ) with a nice portion of lean, juicy, well seasoned meat and grilled onions. Could have used some more cheese which was concentrated at the«hinge» of the roll. The fries were«meh». They were limp, soggy, and bland. I think I offended the guy when I asked for salt for the fries. Oh well, sorry dude, they weren’t that good, but I really liked the Cheese Steak! Cheese Steak: 4.5 stars Fries: 2 stars

Showed up here after a late night hopping around the bars of Downtown San Jose. I had heard from a friend that this was the place to find a good cheesesteak in the South Bay, and it was compared favorably to Jersey Joe’s, which to me is one of the better cheesesteak shops in all of the Bay Area. People working the counter are friendly, so after a nice chat, I ordered my mushroom steak and sat down. Once I got my food, things only got better. Now, I was pretty drunk that night, and having the amount of alcohol I had on an empty stomach was probably not the smartest idea. That said, I cannot think of a better remedy to that than the cheesesteak I had at Philly Style Food. Sure, I was so gone that I couldn’t hold the sandwich at first and was practically tilting it upwards as I dove my face into the tray it was served on, but as I went in bite after bite, it felt like an awakening as I got my strength back and I continued to munch on the delicious sandwich, eventually holding the sandwich and then savoring its final bites as I was finally able to sit up straight. The steak was savory without being overly salty, and the mushrooms on top provided a great texture and flavor compliment to the roll, which was soft and not too chewy or heavy. By the end of it, I was full and plenty satisfied, only wondering when the next time I would be back in San Jose for another. I’d easily recommend this place to any fan of a good cheesesteak.

I would give them ZERO stars if I could. Not only was there only one guy working during the lunch rush, he failed to tell us when we walked in that the credit card machine was broken, mocked me for choosing a remotely healthy option(a sub par veggie burger) at a Philly Cheesesteak place even though I clearly was just tagging along with friends, AND it took him FIFTY minutes to give us our food. FIFTY. To top it off, a roach ran across the wall by the grill while we were waiting. Bottom line: poorly run, filthy, and sub par food. DISGUSTING.

I was a bit underwhelmed by the food. OK that sounds really snooty, and I could picture myself twisting my mustache while wearing a monocle when I typed it. I just don’t love Philly cheese steak in general(don’t defriend me, please!), but one day when my friends and I walked by, we overheard someone saying that this is the most authentic PCS in San Jose. Upon hearing that, I had to try it! Not that I know what authentic PCS tastes like, but if this was authentic PCS… I don’t think I’d ever be a fan of it. It took a while for the food to cook, so we were able to chat with the super friendly owner! They were very nice about our hesitation and questions. Come to think of it, I don’t know what we had to ask — the menu was simple! I ordered a chicken cheese steak. I didn’t get a lot of meat in there, which kind of surprised me. I thought I was going to OD on meat! The skinny fries were a bit salty, but crispy nonetheless. I probably wouldn’t return here again just because well, I don’t love PCS and it didn’t wow me enough for me to return.

The food here was pretty much just average on the whole. Came here for lunch on a Monday with a couple of my co-workers, I got their lunch special which was an 8″ cheese steak sandwich, fries and a drink for about $ 8. The meat in the sandwich was really good, very tender and tasty, but the rest of the sandwich took away from that. For one, they put a large amount of ketchup on the thing. I am not a huge fan of the stuff myself, and i definitely don’t like it in large amounts on anything. The bread was soft, but lacking in flavor. The peppers were also pretty good, but they were $ 1 extra. Fries were way too salty. And they don’t even have a fountain for drinks, i got a straight can of Coke, which means no re-fills. The staff was friendly and the meat was great, but the rest of this place could use some work. 3 stars.

I read some of the reviews and I don’t agree with them. Yes the place may not be fancy, but the food is really good. Do not let these negative or positive reviews make your decide to come here or not, COMETRYITTHEFOODYOURSELF and decide for yourself if the food is good or not. Nothing like the one across the street(The Steak Shop) now that one the food is not good at all!

I have never been so torn trying to come up with the appropriate number of stars for a place as I was for Philly Style Food. I obviously settled on three stars but I kind of wanted to give it two(oh how I wish I could drop 2.5 stars right now) Let’s start with the bad. The place looks… well, dirty. It’s small, kind of dark and just doesn’t feel right. The tables and chairs look like they could have used an update 7 years ago. The day I went the soda machine was not accompanied with straws or lids(this may have been a one time thing or maybe that’s just how they roll in Philly(it might be part of the D.E.N.N.I.S. System… And if you get the reference then we should be friends). The soda machine was also devoid of ice, but even if it had ice you’d have had to scoop it up from an ice trough. I don’t know about you but I don’t want my coming out of an exposed trough. So this was my first impression of the place. Needless to say I was not expecting much out of the food. But when I was served it actually wasn’t bad at all. I got the Philly Cheese Steak with Mushrooms and it was actually really good. The sauce was great. The meat tasted good and the fries were very tasty. The only problem was the bread. It could have been firmer and as it was proved a bit difficult to eat. So over all the food was way better than expected but I’m not sure if it tasted so good because my expectations were so low or if it actually was just good. After writing this review I’m still torn and really want to drop the stars down to two because reliving the experience reminds me how unfortunate the restaurant is, but I think I’ll cut them a break and leave it at three. But just know that I was torn.

Philly Style Food felt incredibly authentic, but probably not for the reasons they intended. Unfortunately I’ve been to Philadelphia a number of times(my cousin moved there for some unknown reason, I’m guessing to prove to the world once and for all that he is insane) and one the few things that keeps the trips from being tortorous is the food. Nothing makes you forget that you that you are in a crappy city more than stuffing your face with a cheesesteak. So what felt authentic? The place was dead at 12:45 on a tuesday afternoon, not a good sign for a restaurant so close to a college campus, city hall, and a ton of businesses. But what is more Philly than a glaring display of our failing economy? After i ordered I went to fill up my soda and noticed that two of the flavors are out of order, not a big deal. Then I noticed there was no ice(normally there is a tray you scoop ice out of, but it was also out of order) … ok that’s annoying on a hot day, but not I’m still trying to keep an open mind. Then I noticed that they didn’t have lids or straws. In Philly you don’t get ice or lids for your drinks, and if you ask for a straw you are going to be using it to drink your meals through it because your jaw is going to be wired shut. Every table in the place was dirty, just like the streets of Philly. And just like in Philly the food was good. I ordered the mushroom cheesesteak and it was stuffed to the brim like a good cheesesteak should be. After I finished I wanted to run the stairs of Philadelphia Museum of Art, but instead I chose to go home and watch a few episodes of «It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia» instead(Kitten Mittens gets 5 stars everytime).

How is this a 4 star? I will never know. I came in and was very excited about ordering my Philly cause I pass by this place all the time. The menu wasn’t very extensive but they do have wings, burgers, salmon burgers, tempura fried mushrooms, tempura fried catfish, cheese sticks, and veggie burgers and fries. First off: –there was only 1 guy running at 12:30. –soda machine was broken. –I ordered the mushroom Philly– I see no onions, no peppers, no mushrooms, and literally no meat! Thank goodness I got the 8″. –they are really and I mean REALLY skimpy on the beef. –I wanted tempura fried mushrooms but the guy said he can’t do that. My biggest mistake was coming here w/relevant expectations. at least now I know to never, ever come here ever again. What a waste of my $ 9 and I actually tipped!

My boyfriend and I went here last night. We were craving Philly sandwiches and decided to Unilocal somewhere in San Jose. We came across this place and seen it had 4 stars so decided to give it a shot. It was also 9 o’clock at night so we both knew there wouldn’t be too many places open late. The place looks a bit older, which is a great look for a Philly place. Once we placed our order it took a bit longer than expected for our food to be ready, especially since we were the only people there. At the same time, food is made fresh so it’s not too bad of a thing. Once we sat down and ate our food, I noticed the portions seem to be a bit small for the price. The sandwich on the other hand was great! The meat was spectacular and the combination with the cheese gave it that extra little boost! The fries on the other hand were bland and greasy. The gentleman helping us was very friendly and personable! Made my experience there good. Overall this place is «OK». If the prices were better OR there was more meat in the sandwichs i’d be giving it 4 stars.

The food here is very good, but expect to wait a bit for your order as nothing seems to be pre-made. The busier the place gets, the longer the wait… The owner is very friendly, and the girls working there are very nice to look at… They lose a star because that bathroom is gnarly…

I understand that this kind of place can be heaven when it’s 2 am and every other place is closed. I believe this place serves food for Freddy J’s next door, so if you’re drinking there, you probably don’t have to see where the food is coming from. Trust me, sometimes it best when you don’t know how they make the sausage. This is a very seedy looking place when lit by daylight. I went here for lunch based on the raving Unilocal reviews. Unfortunately the place didn’t live up to the hype. Everything looked pretty run down, including the Golden Tee game in the corner. The ketchup bottles looked like they hadn’t been cleaned in weeks and mine was almost completely sealed shut with crustiness. The food was very greasy and when I was finished, the paper at the bottom of my basket was almost completely see-through. The absolute deal breaker about this place was that 3 horseflies attacked me as I ate. I had to leave. It was simply unbearable.

Freakin amazing! «Whatever you eat, make it for me» is what I told the owner(Greg) and hooolllly christ on a cracker that sandwich was off the charts. Greg hooked me up with a gooey steak sandwich topped with onions, mushrooms, and peppers. All prepared right in front of me. Fresh and hot. The fries were less than desirable but hey, I only came for the Cheesesteak baby! The owner was really sweet and took care of us right. I’ll be back for sure.

Damn another place where I had high expectations due to the high marks the place has gotten. Now the product is not bad, but it’s not as amazing as some have stated. I guess if I walked out of one of the bars at 2am and was hankerin for a cheesesteak this would definitely hit the spot. However even at 11pm after a show, it did the job but didn’t really excite me. Friends burger came out of frozen so it was run of the mill as reported. Fries were good and the fact that they’re open to 3am is a bonus. 3.5 stars.
