Green & Moncrief Physical Therapy

At 55, I had never had a cast or physical therapy before. I was a little apprehensive going in, but I was immediately relieved as the girls working there were awesome. When I met the P.T., Jonathan, he explained the injury, the cause of my pain, and how WE were going to make it heal properly. Each step, explaining the whys, and hows to each exercise. Great attitudes, great therapist and assistants, and it wasn’t a «Freak show», just wonderfully normal people getting healed!!! Thank you again for teaching me what I need to do to stay healthy!

When I first felt the severe pain in my left shoulder I had no idea what was going on and what the implications might be. I couldn’t reach behind my back with my left arm, barely reach above my head, couldn’t adjust my collar, and couldn’t even sleep through the night. I started with my primary physician at Ross Medical who referred me to Community Orthopedic Medical Group where I met with a Physician’s Assistant. After an MRI and a follow-​up visit with the PA I was prescribed Physical Therapy. I had no idea where to go so I asked them for a recommendation in the area. That led to Green & Moncrief’s location in San Juan Capistrano. I was super happy with the location but had no idea what to expect since I’d never been to Physical Therapy. I also couldn’t help but think the severe pain might be something I would have to live with going forward.
I called to make my first appointment and spoke with Rachel. I warned her I had no idea what I was doing. She was very easy to talk with. She didn’t rush me or make me feel like I was asking stupid questions. I would arrive early to fill out some paperwork and plan for 1.5−2 hours since it is my first meeting with the Physical Therapist, Jonathan. I still didn’t know fully what to expect but I felt good heading into the first appointment.
The paperwork was the usual personal information, background questions, and also a questionnaire to gauge difficulty with daily activities from my problem. This questionnaire would surface a couple of more times throughout my treatment as one of the tools to gauge progress.
The initial meeting and exam with Jonathan was very professional. He has a calm manner and converses well while he gets to know you, your perspective on your problem, reads the information from the referring Doctor, and determines his own opinion on the problem, takes measurements, etc so that he can create a physical therapy program specific to your situation. When I left I knew how many times a week he wanted me to be there but still didn’t know exactly what I would be doing each visit. I probably could have asked but I was taking it one step at a time.
My first regular appointment showed me what to expect for all future appointments. I arrived, signed in, waited to be called, and then either Hieu (Hugh) or Rachel would guide me from one exercise to the next making sure I knew exactly what to do and adjusting as needed for my capability. Once I was independently working through an exercise they would move to another client and then when I was done they were either already back to me or very shortly back to me. After each exercise they would write down some notes on how I did and we’d be off to the next one. During each visit I met with Jonathan for a period of time for him to work on my shoulder and determine progress. If he says to meet you at one of the tables in the open room, don’t stress. He is very attentive and discreet. After my final exercise, and shoulder icing, I checked out with Rachel, paid my co-​pay and was on my way.
After a few visits I was very comfortable. Jonathan, Hieu, and Rachel work together well and create a very comfortable environment. If I ever had to wait for my next direction after an exercise it was only for a very short period of time. I wouldn’t want them to rush with me so I didn’t mind them finishing with other clients before getting back to me. Once I got accustomed to the routine I could also ask one of them what the next exercise should be and move onto it myself. If it requires any set up, they seemed to prefer me to wait for them to set it up before I started and that was okay by me. Over time as I progressed the exercises changed and that also helped keep it interesting.
This is getting really long, but I hope it is helpful for first timers.
So how did things turn out for me? I am extremely happy to say that the pain is mostly gone and much of the flexibility/​usefulness of my should has returned. It’s maybe 90% of what it used to be. From where I started, the pain that I felt, I am very happy with the progress in my ~two months working at it. In my final checkup with the PA she said if I stick with the at-​home program Jonathan created for me there is no reason I shouldn’t get back to 100%.
I am really grateful to Jonathan, Hieu, and Rachel for all their help. I would not hesitate to recommend Green & Moncrief’s San Juan Capistrano location to anyone who needs Physical Therapy. During my time there I saw them help a wide variety of people with a wide variety of issues. I never saw anyone displeased or without personal attention.

I view Jonathan, Rachel, and hugh as a Godsend and they clearly have a passion to help. Jonathan has an excellent memory, understanding of the human anatomy, and the talent to monitor precisely where patients are in their progress.
Rachel has an incredible ability to multi-​task with focus and a smile. And Hugh is on top of each patient’s custom therapy schedule.
Now that I have received care, I realize that the close proximity of the San Juan Capistrano location to my home is just a bonus. Green & Moncrief are worthy of a much greater distance travelled.

Since a stroke 2 years ago I have searched for health assistance in our South Orange county area. These days I mostly ride my trike around town for transportation instead of driving my car. Well I went over a curb and turned over my trike. This accident hurt my hip, back, and neck.
I couldn’t walk at all for a while, but as soon as I could I went to Sol Fire for hot yoga trying to loosen my muscles. I was not healed enough for all of the poses so I went to The Doctor at the Ross Medical Clinic in SJC they sent me for physical therapy with Green and Moncrief.
I received great help from this kind, patient, and knowledgeable staff. They even helped me fill out the insurance paper work. It was very good service. They taught me the simple yoga poses to use for this injury. I believe they used yoga for me because this is the exercise I am most used to.
Encouraging me to use my thoughts in concentrating on core strength building. Explaining to me how to think and focus my energy to the front part of my stomach in order to build the muscles that eases the pain and facilitates healing. I am very grateful for their teaching and treatment.

Jonathan, Hugh, and Rachel are absolutely amazing!
I have seen major improvements since beginning physical therapy a few months ago and I continue to improve because Jonathan is constantly adjusting my regimen to the perfect challenge level. Hugh and Rachel are outstanding assets and the three of them make an excellent team. I laugh and actually have fun while doing PT!
They are on top of your health, scheduling, insurance, etc. The facility is clean, usually has plenty of parking, and contains a wide assortment of PT tools. I truly have nothing negative to say about the staff or location here!

I have suffered a compressed disk between L4 and L5 and for years have been in chronic pain. At the San Juan Capistrano office, Joe and his team are simply excellent at their job. They started me with simple exercise and gradually made things more and more intense. My pain is gone! plain and simple. I am very happy with the treatment I received, cordial, professional and caring. Incidentally, I noticed that Joe knew all the patients by first name and tracks their progress. This is an excellent physical therapy facility with highly skilled and knowledgeable staff. Appointments are booked so that you get personal attention throughout your session from therapists who know your limits but motivate you to doing your best. Their equipment is new, clean, and well maintained. Therapy benches well spaced in the bay while two private therapy rooms are also available. Their front office staff are friendly and efficient and handle scheduling and billing effortlessly.
They are located a few blocks from the old mission in San Juan Capistrano next to a freeway exit for easy access to their facility and many other small businesses and retailers.
