Always fresh and great service. The owner will make special requests for us. We eat here several times a month and have for years. I highly recommended it

I usually come to this place & they are always excellent. The food is great. Their selection of Sushi is so wide & their different kind of bento boxes are very filling. They really miss the ball when its a busy night. They seated us in the other dining room which I initially thought was great because theres more room back there but they totally forgot about the people they seated back there. We waited for 30 mins & no one came to get our drink order. So we just left. I think this place is great but just not on a busy day.

2.5÷5− Rounding up because they were nice and included the piece of Uni like I requested. Needed an easy takeout item before I headed to the library to study so stopped by here for a chirashi. I ordered using Unilocal’s online system though I’m not sure if they do it anymore. Parking in the area is difficult. I stopped by Takahashi before coming here so I parked in their lot and walked over to pick up my meal which was ready in under 15 minutes. It was around 1pm on a Saturday and the place still had a couple of full tables. I ordered a chirashi which was $ 21 and I requested a piece of Uni if possible(and noted that I would be willing to pay extra). While I’m glad they honored my request for uni without an extra charge, the overall portion was still extremely sad. The meal came with 3 pieces of salmon, 2 pieces of tuna, 2 pieces of albacore, a piece of escolar, a quarter size piece of watery uni and 2 pieces of tamago. None of the fish quality was particularly good and considering that their uni is one of their top items, the quality wasn’t great either. Even if they took out 3 pieces of fish to give me the uni it still wouldn’t have been worth it. Overall I’m disappointed. While the food wasn’t the awful it was overpriced and average. Maybe I’ll give this place another shot in the future.

My wife and I have become regulars here over the past few months. The wait staff is extremely friendly and the food is really good and reasonably priced. It’s all we could ask for from our neighborhood sushi joint. The standouts for me are the salmon and trout nigiri, but I have yet to try anything I haven’t liked.

Fuji Sukiyaki is my favorite sushi spot and honestly just the only place I go for sushi anymore. I’ve gotten too used to the generous portions of fresh fish and the good prices to be satisfied anywhere else. I come here about once a month and Steve, the wonderful sushi chef, and his family are top notch. Service is friendly and quick, especially at the bar. They have a decent selection of sakes and their recommendations of which bottle to choose are pretty much always on point(though your mileage may vary on taste, of course). When it comes to the food, you can’t get much better, especially for the price. Is this nobu? No, of course not. But for a neighborhood sushi spot you really can’t go wrong. Steve’s unagi is grilled and melt in your mouth delicious with a made on location sauce that beats every other place I’ve tried. I highly recommend trying the aji– a truly delicious fish with a beautiful presentation– and the seared walu topped with uni(my favorite!!). I don’t venture out of the sushi and rolls menu too often, but I do love their Kama and tempura every now and then. As far as the rolls, I’m normally full off just two because they’re a pretty decent size. And the crab they use for their rolls is way, way better than your run of the mill sushi place. It’s got actual texture and taste as opposed to the mushy, wet mess that I’ve had elsewhere. Sometimes I like get an order of kani or a California roll just because I love the crab so much. All in all, I’ve been other places, but I keep coming back to Fuji sukiyaki. It’s definitely worth a shot if you’re in the area.

Support family owned businesses like Fuji Sukiyaki! FOOD/DRINK: The food is always consistent with fresh fish and great bento boxes. I spoke with the owner and he actually drives to the supplier and picks up his own fish. Now that’s important, most restaurant get their fish delivered so you don’t have a choice. If you check out their pictures, you can see the difference. AMBIANCE: When you walk in, you’ll see Japanese influences throughout the restaurant. It’ll be immediately clear that you’re not having American food. They have tatami rooms for more private occasions, which is rare in today’s restaurants. SERVICE: GREAT! This is a family owned restaurant so they take their service and treating their guest right. Expect to have enthusiastic waitresses walking about ready to assist you. The Sushi chefs are great too, always with a smile on their faces. CREDITCARD: Yes. PARKING: Street parking, but it’s not the tough part of San Mateo, you should be fine. OVERALL: If you’re looking for a solid sushi joint, come check this place out. Support local businesses!

Don’t be cheated by their beautiful sushi picture, you will be very disappointed when you visit. Those pics were uploaded by one person! The food is really terrible. We order one piece of toro and one piece of salmon. The server did not tell us it’s two pieces per order. The toro looks not fresh at all, and it was 16.8 per order!!! You can get much better fatty tuna in other place. I’m very angry with this place and the person who upload 200 fake photos for this place. Don’t come here!

Fast service! Parking was standard… food was good, but didn’t match the quality of the pictures they had! They could work on the pricing also… I possibly would come back…

I’ve ordered a platter of sushi from here twice and every time, everyone enjoys it. I came here late night with my family and it’s really good. My mom ordered ramen and she said it was really tasty. My dad ordered chicken teriyaki plate. It came with soup and a salad. My dad doesn’t usually order chicken teriyaki because he finds that most places, their chicken is dry. But it wasn’t the case here, he finished all of it. My sister ordered a bento box that came with beef and chicken teriyaki, California rolls, tempura, salad, soup, and rice. This was about $ 19. The beef teriyaki was flavorful and somewhat smoky which gave a really nice taste. For me, I got the dinner combination with chicken teriyaki and vegetable tempura. Usually when having tempura, I find that it is way to oily for me and makes me feel sick. But I like to try tempura at a new place and I am happy to say that I would get their tempura again. The coating is thin but still crunchy. And it isn’t greasy to the point where I need to wash everything down with tea. Overall, I would come back here. Their food is good and their sushi is delicious especially for the price!

It was okay. I still think old town sushi is better. But it was good for the price. Ordered 5 rolls lion king roll, samarai roll, okinawa, tokyo and spider roll and my cousin ordered the sea urchin over rice. The spider roll had a great crunch to it. The sea urchin wasn’t much .and 10x more rice and 4 strips of urchin. Overall everything was OK.

Fuji Sukiyaki is one of those places that is very unassuming from the outside but it is a rare gem for sushi in the Bay Area. We have been to all the sushi places around the San Mateo area, and this is easily the best place. The fish is consistently fresh and the flavours are all delicious. Try the Omakase, Oyster bomb and Sunrise! They aren’t on the menu but if you ask they will know!

I was disappointed thinking that it was a sushi place from looking at the pictures. To be fair, their roll is very reasonably priced and tasted good. But the fresh fish fell short. I ordered the deluxe nigiri lunch but a few pieces of fish looked and tasted mushy, looked different from other’s beautiful sushi picture. Maybe it was an off day for them.

This is a pretty solid place for sushi. San Mateo is full of sushi places, especially places like Sushi Sam’s but I think this is a pretty decent place for that in-between quality of sushi. It’s not all you can eat sushi quality, but also not like $ 100+ omakase sushi. It falls in that in-between category and it does that in-between category well. If you live in the area, this is a great place to go if you have a sushi craving and don’t feel like waiting in line for a long time. It’s not super big, but both times we’ve been, it’s been super easy to get a seat. It’s also a pretty casual environment, and the servers have been really friendly and nice. So far, we have tried: (1) Agedashi tofu (2) Tempura(2 pieces of shrimp tempura, 1 – 2 each of sweet potato, green beans and carrots) (3) Unagi hand roll(BBQ eel, cucumber, tobiko, avocado) (4) Rainbow roll(cucumber, crab, and avocado, topped with different raw fish and tobiko). (5) Honey roll(shrimp tempura and crab, salmon, avocado, and sauce). (6) Aloha roll(avocado, cucumber, crab, and shrimp tempura, topped with red tuna, white tuna, and crunchy tempura flakes and house special sauce and tobiko). (7) Sea Monster roll(avocado, crab, cucumber, and shrimp tempura, topped with BBQ eel, seaweed salad, and tobiko). The appetizers are solid, I can’t really say anything bad about them. The tempura is fried well and the sauce accompanying it is good. The agedashi tofu tastes decent too. If I’m getting rolls, I really like the ones that fill me up. Those are usually the ones with tempura shrimp and avocado — so that’s mostly a common theme in the rolls that I’ve tried. I love the Sea Monster roll… because the ingredients in it are my favorite — barbecued eel, seaweed salad, crab, shrimp tempura. the best. The rolls have all been pretty good. The ingredients are fresh and they’re very large because they don’t skimp on the ingredients, so you definitely leave feeling pretty full. My boyfriend likes the hotate and ama ebi here. They also have uni here usually. This place is pretty good for take-out too.

We go to this restaurant usually on Sunday for lunch. It is a very quiet restaurant, with casual customers and good food where you can relax and enjoy your week-end :) We have been there for years, and i think the we tried at one point or another, everything available on their menu, ha ha

Really fresh sashimi as Unilocaled all over the place! I had the sushi special 5 nigiri and 6 pieces of the San Mateo roll. The fish pieces were very generous. It was so good I didn’t bother asking my lunch mates about their cooked food choices. The price was pretty reasonable. Although, they will charge $ 1.75 for an extra bowl of rice. That’s pretty steep since the bowl is kind of small. I won’t have to worry about that since sushi is my game.

The sushi portions were bigger than I imagines. Coming in, I knew I wanted the seared salmon toro as an appetizer because I heard about it. I’ve only tried seared salmon at another place, but this place definitely beats it without a doubt. The pieces are so huge and thick that it is worth your money. We also ordered 3 more rolls. Maybe that’s a. Bit too much for just two girls haha. I believe we got the aloha, one with a bunch of salmon, and the dynamite. I think my favorite would be the dynamite because it’s so different and they drizzle on a hot sauce that compliments the sushi quite well. I would definitely come back and try other things on the menu,

We’ve been eating here regularly for almost two years now. They have spoiled us for all other sushi places! Now, we don’t even go to any other sushi place unless we’re craving for it when we were out of town. All their stuff are fresh everyday and my husband who is a «sushi snob» will attest to it. Every time we have a guest visiting from out of state or out of the country, we always bring them here and they love it. We’ve even brought non-sushi eaters here and made converts out of them :) And no celebration is complete without coming here! I could go on and on but I’ll never finish this update on my review, which I’ve been trying to make for the last six months so I’m just going to give two highlights: Ankimo(Monk Fish Liver) — you’ll never get it any better than this! It’s so delicate and creamy so if you like fish liver, put this one on your bucket list. I have to warn you though that my husband doesn’t like it. He says it’s too fishy for him! Shrimp Tempura — you can find this in any Japanese restaurant. I’ve never really liked it until I tasted it here when I ordered a bento box. I’m not sure what kind of oil they use and what batter they put on it but I promise it’s nothing like any Shrimp Tempura anywhere!!! As soon as we sit down, Jane and her sister already know this is our starter… just a matter of how many we will order :) Let me just add one more thing: other sushi places are cheap but it’s mostly rice and fillers so that you hardly taste the fish. Others have a good size portion of fish but very expensive… and not always fresh. Here, you can rely on fresh fare everyday, good size portion and very fairly priced!

A cozy little sushi place in downtown san mateo A small sushi restaurant, usually not that crowded, but does have a somewhat wide variety of rolls and nigiris on the menu. The décor inside looks pretty nice, with wooden bamboos and such, although the place looks like it’s been around for a while. I tried to find some of the rolls I saw on Unilocal, like the sunrise roll, but for some reason it’s not on the menu – perhaps you need to explicitly ask for it? Anyways, I got the egg don and also a salmon hand roll. The hand roll was very good, tightly bound, with a lot of salmon, and a lot of sauce, so that when you bite into the roll all the flavor fills your mouth. The egg don is also pretty good. The rice is basically warm sushi rice, and there were a fair amount of chicken. It also came with a free miso soup, that had a lot of tofu bits in it. Overall, an ok sushi place to visit. The food quality isn’t as good as sushi sam’s etc, but it’s still pretty good.
