I really love this little spot, they have that authentic taste from Guatemala, I recommend the tamales de pollo, atole de elote, pupusas, and the bread is very good as well

My beau is from Guatemala and often he misses the sweet goodies from his country. One day, just visiting San Mateo, we passed by the Tikal panaderia and got attracted to the painting on wood outside the store, depicting a typical pyramid scene(of Tikal, of course:). It was closed that time so we put it in our ‘to try another day’ mental list. We finally went last week and had an awesome time buying Incasa coffee, their most popular instant coffee, as well as different sweet breads(made there, just flying from the shelves). Not overtly sweet as the American pastries and not exactly similar to the Mexican ones either. Check it out, I found everything cheap and good. Plus I liked to play ‘glocery store girl’ and the lady working that day allowed me to feel at home. For my boyfriend was like a trip home minus the flight ticket.

The place is clean. I’m in search of Guatemala coffee and this place has it. One of these days, I’m going to try one of their drinks: Rice, Corn, or oatmeal. Each person came in and got a cup to-go.

The Pineapple cake is sooooo good. The slices are huge three of us couldn’t eat one. This is a no frills little café on the edge of Downtown San Mateo. Perfect for a quick(and cheap) coffee and snack.

Like the Power Rangers say, «It’s Morphin’ Time» when they are ready to take on some bad guys, I excitedly proclaimed, «It’s Carbo-Loadin’ Time» as we stepped into this small Guatemalan bakery. We got some baked bread. Just a hint of sweetness, these firm panes would be great with a cup of milk or coffee. I made the mistake of eating the panes by themselves, which did not do them justice, as they tasted a bit dry. My favorite item was the mil hojas(thousand sheets): a delicious confectionery built with alternating layers of whipped cream and flaky pastry with powdered sugar on top. A bite of the light, fluffy cream and pastry flakes creates an amazing blend of textures in your mouth. We also tried the Pork and Chicken Tamales that were both good. They aren’t huge so they can comfortably complement any other items you are interested in. They do come with bones so don’t inhale your tamale! Piqued by how good everything was, we also wanted to try out the Chicken Quesadilla, Chicken Burrito, and Pan con Frijoles, Queso, Huevo(Bread with Beans, Cheese, Egg), but the server told us they only serve those items in the morning. I guess I’ll have to make a stop here in the morning one day.

This is a small Guatemalan Bakery just on the outskirts of downtown San Mateo. They have quite a large selection of baked goods from Bread to Cake and Pastries at very reasonable prices, most item’s being under $ 1. They also serve Coffee and have a very small amount of seating(1 table inside and 1 or 2 outside in the nicer weather). I really have very little experience with Guatemalan baked goods but I would say the breads are better than the Cakes. I recently picked up a couple of huge cake slices with really very little idea what I was actually getting: Jam Filled Cake $ 1.25( ) Dense, light amount of Jam filling. Not too sweet. The other was some Banana /Coconut based item $ 1.50( ) which was a cross between Banana Bread and Cake. The texture was a bit odd to me — Soft but also juicy(?) not sure what it was coated with but it was pretty good. It also weighed quite a bit, probably around 1lb! You really do get a lot for your money here!

Great place and super cheap! It will probably cost you more gas to drive here. It’s a legit place to get some hot rice milk *yummers!*.

Small Guatemalan bakery with delicious lightly sweetened breads and cookies. It’s run by two families, everything’s baked fresh daily. The bakers come in overnight and start baking up the bread so that it’s ready by morning. A bagful of little breads runs you about $ 2! Great to have with a cup of coffee. If they make you a mocha, it because I told them how to!

Very low key Mexican bakery and café. It’s just outside of the main downtown area so there’s not a lot of foot traffic. Their breads and pastries are solid. Especially the apple filled ones. Give this mom and pop place your business, they’re super nice!
