This is an old school barber kind of place, just like it says in the name. There are people that like the style on offer here. If you are older, haven’t changed your style since 1952 or aren’t in any particular hurry this place may appeal to you. They definitely have that old school barber style down cold. The bargain cut is allegedly less then ten dollars cash, but that excludes so many services that you’ll no doubt be looking at 15 – 20 for a trim no matter what. I’d only feel comfortable recommending this place for small children, as no lie, they have some fussy child handling skills, but if you are wanting anything that’s not short on the top, shorter on the sides mens style of cut, stay away.

Excellent cut well worth $ 10. They could charge $ 12 and still be «Thrifty,» especially given their location in a high-rent district. Knocked off a star for lack of a razor finish. Funky décor is reminiscent of someone’s overgrown memorabilia collections needing a second home. I recommend this place for quality and price; I’d be a regular if I lived here.

WARNING: If you are a woman be especially be warned. I went in with a long, soft layered cut that had grown out. She asked me what I wanted. I said I wanted it layered down the sides over my ears and keep the back longer.(essentially what I went in with but trimmed shorter). I was utterly shocked by what she did. She cut the hair on the sides less than an inch short and the top looked like a man’s flat top. It was a man’s cut. I so was devastated I thought of buying a wig until it grows out.

Loretta is fabulous! Took our 3 year old twins there on a Saturday morning. It was so busy and she was absolutely patient and wonderful(despite one other very grumpy customer). The kids had great and very affordable haircuts and were given toy airplanes and snuggles. She gave me her card and told me to contact her if we came again and we could book a time when she’d be in. Highly recommended!

If I had used these reviews alone, I might have skipped this place. Glad I did not make that mistake. I think most people need to temper their expectations. It’s an inexpensive barber not Paul Mitchell. I got a great fade, trim and shampoo for $ 15 out of the door with no wait. The two women in the shop were extremely personable and the one who cut my hair took just enough time to get it right and made sure it was what I wanted. I’ll be making the trip from Salinas every two weeks for a cleanup, worth every penny.

First off, I was charged $ 15 instead of $ 10. Watch yourself at checkout if you dare set foot in here. I got the worst hair cut of my life. The second worst was the first time I came here. The only reason I came back was out of laziness. It was a Saturday and I didn’t have time to find a barber and wait an hour. Nothing is clean in here. Not the shelves, not the checkout area, not the stylists, not the customers. My barber had two-inch long gray roots. What does that tell you? I went to Great Clips to undo the damage and my stylist actually said, «What the hell did they do to you there?» If you’re looking to get your head shaved, I suppose they’d do a decent job. Otherwise there are a ton more superior barbers in town. Don’t embarrass yourself by going here.

Was there to cut my hair, waited 30 minutes. I thought they did the job which took less than 5 – 6 minutes and I was like whao… but didn’t say anything and saw my haircut, looked like porcupine. They charged me $ 15 dollars for the worst hair cut of my life. I was there like 6 years ago and I had the same experience. My head looked triangular back then coz of the worst haircut, but this time was in different mindset thought probably things have changed. Nope, I couldn’t wait a month to keep my hair like porcupine and went ahead and cut at somewhere else.

For my first visit, I brought my 5 year old son in. The owner cut his hair. She was really good with him while he was throwing a hissy fit cause he did not want his hair cut. She handled it really well. It’s a great old school looking place. The only thing is that they take cash. But a great place

My name is Josh and I have been going to thirfty cuts for the last few months and have always been treated so well. Loretta and the gals always had a friendly and inviting demeanor that makes me feel at home. The ladies are great listeners and do a great job of paying attention to every detail when it comes to my perfectionist needs. I work, live and love santa cruz and the fact that this is not only the best barber shop in santa cruz, but a local one will definetly make me a permanent client. Lastly thanks for the amazing cut yesterday, I’ve gotten a lot of compliments!
