Tried the Mayan chocolate and really enjoyed the complex flavors. As soon as we came in we were greeted by the staff and offered tastings of the different types of chocolate elixirs. It did get a bit crowded and took them quite a while to ring up my friend´s purchases, but we weren´t in a hurry.

I don’t swoon over chocolate perhaps as much as others do, but who doesn’t like chocolate? Came here yesterday after walking around Canyon road. It was quite busy for a Sunday afternoon, but it didn’t take long to order some hot chocolate(comes in teeny mugs) and three pieces of chocolate. The best was the peanut butter chocolate piece. ERMAHGERD so delicious! They have some space inside and outside to enjoy the chocolate. Strangely, no coffee. Seems like the kind of place that would also serve coffee. I swoon over coffee more than chocolate, I guess.

If you love chocolate, you definitely have to come here. Many choices of different chocolate drinks and snacks(ball and brownie). I had an American chocolate, which is mixed with 72% chocolate and almond milk, God, is amazingly smooth, rich. Love it! My husband had Tzul, which. Is mixed with 36% chocolate, almond milk, spice blend, is suitable people who don’t like too heavy chocolate. Btw, the attendant was nice and willing to give us free sample’s’ and suggests. The only thing you have to concern is its price. It definitely not cheap.

This is definitely one of the city’s gem and I recommend folks to drop in for a visit when in Santa Fe. Kakawa Chocolate does not play small and safe at all and often plays with bold flavors and pairings. Sure you can have regular chocolate but why would you when you can have a unique experience. I had the goat cheese sage truffle and it blew me away to see how they were able to make those flavors work in chocolate. The sipping chocolate is what they are most known for but instead of having a European influence, their twist is that there presentation is more from Mexico. After all, makes sense since the cacao bean originated in Mexico, right? The blends of floral and sweet makes the sipping chocolate heavenly. Come out here not only because you love chocolate but you are open in trying something presented to you in a unique and interesting way. I was going to just buy souveniers to bring back to LA but instead, took the moment to enjoy a truffle and coffee in their cozy shop. The crew here is also super-friendly. I would definitely come back here.

My dad, brother, and I are on a trip from Los Angeles and we were told by friends that while we stay in Santa Fe we HAD to check out Kakawa. So we did and it was awesome! The chocolate drinks tasted like straight up liquid chocolate from heaven. And the employee, Erin(Aaron something like that), was so helpful and great at explaining and sampling every delicious flavor. She was funny, fun to talk to and made us feel at home. Mix the American chocolate with a splash of Mayan for a little spice! SOYUMMY!!!

Walking in, the drinking elixir was given to me. Why, oh, why did he give me the Elixir? It was simply delicious. I moved to the counter to check out the chocolates to bring home to my people. I selected caramels with pinion, chili caramels, and dark chocolates infused with chili. Everyone thanked me when I got home. I ordered up some items for Christmas and received a handwritten thank you from the shop. Delicious! Don’t miss it when you visit Santa Fe.

This is one of those snobbish moments where I «knew» him when. The last time I had an experience with Kakawa, I’m pretty sure it was the owner and he was selling down by the plaza. The chocolates were a little too adventurous for me but I kept on the mailing list for years because I knew one day I would buy some. So, I go to the location with a largely empty parking lot that belied the huge line inside. This place was wall to wall people and the varieties of chocolates were staggering. They had sipping chocolates, brownies, non-chocolate cookies, ice creams, truffles, ‘regular’ chocolates. Seriously, something for everyone. For me it was one of those moments when you actually see someone succeed at what they love and it made me very happy. I picked up a a variety of chocolates which they boxed up for me very prettily(gift). The staff were super friendly and helpful in picking out chocolates and they have a very efficient check out process.

Delicious!!! So that part said, it is a tad on the expensive side. That is the only downside to this wonderful place. I had the Mayan drinking chocolate, and bought a healthy amount of other chocolates to share with my wife. I truly enjoyed the Mayan drinking chocolate, wonderful spices, heat from chilis, fragrant nose and full rich chocolate — get the large!

Delicious hot chocolate and great service. You can get tastes of all the hot chocolates, which I highly recommend as they vary wildly in flavors. The truffles were also amazing!

I like to say I make really good hot coco during the winter. But oh how this place killed that idea and left it in a New Mexican dessert to rot. They let me try several samples before I even picked the one I liked the most. I enjoyed the chili hot chocolate but what really got me was the Havana. It was just the right amount of sweet but with a wonderful rum spice to it. It was thick and just full of flavor. I got the 6oz cup and wish I could of had more but it was just so rich. I will have to find away to make my hot coco this way and if I can’t I might have to come back one day to enjoy this amazing flavor. This is the best hot coco I have ever had and that’s not a understatement.

They let you sample a lot of the chocolate, so you are bound to find a thick liquid helping of processed cacao that any child, sweets-lover, and probably even non-sweets-lover would enjoy. Plus, they’re just nice to chat with.

Great option of chocolate treats to include chocolate drinks. I had a variety of chocolates that were great. The only thing I regret is not purchasing one of their versions of brownies. I got my chocolate fix then could’ve gotten one to go maybe. Well there’s always next time.

I’ve had this place bookmarked for a while and was excited to check it out on a visit to SF. We tried the milk chocolate truffle and the green chile chocolate. They were really good! Super rich in flavor and heavy. It’s one of those chocolates that you eat sparingly. One truffle was enough to make me feel guilty, and that’s coming from a chocolate fanatic. Haha The only downside is that their prices are really steep. $ 6.76 for those two little itty bitty chocolates! I think a one time visit was enough because I really don’t think a truffle is worth $ 3.00

A must visit if you come to Santa Fe and like chocolate in any way. There speciality are their warm chocolate drinks. They make unique blends, Meso-American and European, and serve in two sizes, 3 oz or 6 oz. The staff was so friendly and let us try little cups of every type before we settled on what we wanted. While there were some tasty options, especially the Meso-American ones with chili, I chose one called Tzul. It was unbelievable, in some way reminding me of chai, a chocolate with yummy spices. After drinking we bought 12 truffles and have eaten about 6 so far and they all are just delightful. In fact, I just finished a cherry one that was to die for. The shop is adorable, the staff is friendly and helpful — our son has tree nut allergies and they were super careful about separating our truffles and only serving him chocolate drinks without any nuts or nut milk. They also offer organic ice cream that you can get their chocolate fudge put on. The store is adorable and has plenty of tables to sit and enjoy whatever treats you decide to enjoy. If you are looking for something unique and to get your fix of chocolate, make your way to Kakawa.

Ever have a chocolate-gasm? Me either. until I tried Kakawa’s sipping chocolate. It is seriously amazing. AMAZING. I can’t even tell you the extent of it, even if I used more descriptive words. When you arrive, they will give you a sample of the sipping chocolate. In fact, they’ll let you try out whatever intrigues you. They were all super helpful in giving recommendations. I fancied the good old American. It tasted like a brownie in liquid form, yet better, somehow fudgier, and creamy beyond words. It was the best damn chocolate I think I’ve had. It is thicker and richer than your Swiss Miss hot chocolate packets, guys. This doesn’t even compare, not even close. And it’s SO worth the calories. We also sampled a few of their truffles. We had the French dark, blood orange & chili, goat cheese, and tiramisu. My faves were the French dark and the tiramisu, guess I wasn’t feeling crazy adventurous that day. The goat cheese & sage one is definitely interesting and very good. The blood orange one was more orange-flavored, not so much spicy as I though it would be. Still though, the sipping chocolate is what stood out to me. Ah, wish I could have more. Choco-holics and chocolate lovers alike, this should be a destination all its own.

May, 2nd The second time I came here on a rainy day. It was crowded. I ordered a milk chocolate ice cream, which turned out to be too sweet for me. The original chocolate flavor is better. Then I tried dark chocolate brownie, it was wonderful. The texture feels alike to red bean cake.

We’d scoped out Kakawa days before arriving in Santa Fe. The Unilocal reviews raved about the elixirs that they offer and the descriptions of the truffles piqued our interest. On our afternoon self-guided chocolate tour, Kakawa was the 3rd stop. Upon entering the very cute and cozy store, Tony(the owner) offered us a sample of their most popular drinking chocolate — the American. He then mentioned that we could try as many samples as we wanted. So, sample we did! From the Tzul to the Chai, Chili, and Atole(featuring blue corn), each of their elixirs was rich and crafted with such bold and unique flavors. We ended up getting several truffles, caramels, and elixir mixes to go. I tried the goat cheese and sage, prickly pear, and blueberry basil truffles. The goat cheese was the standout favorite. It’s surprisingly a wonderful ingredient to pair with chocolate. While I certainly tasted the goat cheese, it didn’t overpower the chocolate and the hint of sage was perfect. After I devoured mine, a friend went back to the counter to get in line to get another one. She loved it as well. I’m looking forward to making the Tzul at home and remembering the lovely shop in Santa Fe where we expanded our chocolate horizons. The prices were on par with other chocolate shops in the city but the variety of options, the creativity of the flavors, and the hospitality of the employees here was far above what we experienced elsewhere. Everyone working at Kakawa, and especially the owner, was so pleasant, accommodating, and generous. We actually ran into Tony around town the following day and he was just as kind then as he was in his shop. This place is amazing and it should definitely be on the«to-do» list for visitors to Santa Fe. Enjoy!
