The Garden Market is one of Santa Paula’s hidden gems. Hidden because it is off the well traveled routes. It sits up 10th Street a few blocks after Hwy 150 peels off towards Ojai. But for thd locals, it has most of the essentials you might have forgotten to buy but really need now! Also, the meat counter is great. And at the back of the store is one of the best places in Santa Paula to buy some great Mexican take out.

It’s no secret that Santa Paula has an abundance of Mexican food establishments, at least a couple dozen by my rough estimate. Most have had a stronghold in town for years and years, but the one place that has dominated the local burrito scene in SP is the Cocina at Garden Market. The convenience store slash carniceria slash taco shop is tucked away on the eastside off 10th St. amongst a residential neighborhood with an elementary school across the street. I have friends and family in the area and have frequented this joint for almost a decade. It had been a while since I’d stopped by the Market for a burrito; I’ve had many different varieties over the years, including a delicious chile relleno with nopales, but I’m smack dab in the middle of the hunt for the best carne asada burrito in the«Snake Pit» and Garden Market was the 6th stop on the list of a roughly estimated couple dozen. Let’s be up front and honest — food is subjective and burritos are interpreted in a kaleidoscope of opinions, but when a reputation has been formed for a particular spot there’s a reason and a rhyme. My 2 cents? The cooks in the kitchen at Garden Market are burrito masters and very good at what they do. The ratio of rice to beans to steak to cilantro and onions was perfect, the roll was tight and precise, the tortilla was grilled slightly to give it an added crunch. It’s a solid creation. The meat is chopped fine and liberally distributed. The red and green salsas are fresh and tasty, the red has a hint of a kick, the green doesn’t, but I found it to pair the best with the meat burreet. The service has always been fast and friendly for me over the years, though it’s best to come after the lunch rush or early in the morning(if you happen to be in the area, perhaps on your way to Ojai via the 150). The burro comes in at a shade under $ 5 so it’s a great value, but no chips are included. You order and receive your food in the back of the market where the kitchen is and pay at the front register. My 1 to 5 burrito scale of chingon is giving this carne asada a solid, highly recommended 4. Dig in! It’s a popular spot to grab lunch and the family that operates the place are very nice, it’s worth it to leave the kitchen a tip! They definitely have a loyal customer on my side of the coin. Cruise by and get your burrito on!

This is a goto place when I can’t figure out what I want to eat. You can’t go wrong with their burritos, I’ve had their barbacoa, asada, and pastor. My favorite is barbacoa, it’s braised beef with awesome mexican spices. The portion size is enough to fill you up. I can’t say it’s the best burrito I’ve ever had but damn it’s good. I’ve been here for their breafast burrito’s and this is one of the few places that makes bacon perfect, it’s not burned and crispy or raw and chewy, it’s just perfectly in the middle. Also, they have fundraisers where you can buy a dinner plate from this place, if you get a chance to buy a ticket, don’t let the opportunity pass you by, the plate of food you get is awesome and goes together so well. The other part of this place is an awesome butcher shop. The owner(atleast I think he is) always greets you and he’s very friendly and helpful. I swear everytime he’s there I feel like he’s a friend and I walk out happy. If you like sausage you got to try his unique blends. My favorite for BBQ is his jalapino cheddar but they’re all awesome. If you like breakfast sausage you got to try their blend they make themselves, you won’t want to eat it anywhere else again. Try this butcher shop!

I’ve been eating their food for years so I guess I should write a review. I’ve had everything on the menu and it’s all great. This holiday season I bought a dozen tamales and a container of salsa to bring home to mom’s. Service was fast, friendly, and efficient, like always. The tamales were delicious. The salsa is too. They’ve won me over and I’ll be a return customer whenever I visit back home.

This place is a favorite place with the locals. I recently ordered a burrito de lengua; it tasted great, but what I endured afterwards was terrible!

Although this has been a market for many decades and still is, it is the kitchen in the rear that gets all of the attention. Everyone from the owners, Maria and her husband, right through the kitchen staff are pleasant and accommodating. The food is filling but not too much. It is priced right for what you get and a bargain compared to other locales. They’ve got a nice selection of types of meals in addition to types of meat. Of course they’ve got your vegetarian items also. The food is tasty and even when it is busy around meal times you wait is not long. I’ve been coming here for many years and just recently noticed that they also serve breakfast. Lastly try the meat there while you are at it. Maria’s husband, Victor, is very friendly and will give you tips on how to best prepare your meat. Give them a try and your stomach will be pleased.

I know all of the locals will want to come after me but seriously the burritos here are no bueno! Idk what all the hype about this place is. Yeah it’s a good idea in theory, little back counter at your local market, grab a burrito or taco and your out of there in 10 mins but seriously if you can’t execute the food what’s the point? I was so excited to find this place thinking id get a real down home cooking-ghetto fab burrito for $ 5 only to regret each and every bite. I tried the carnitas burrito & it epically failed, bland generally speaking, white-wash tasting rice and the carnitas had very little flavor. I’m thinking I’ll give this place one more chance & go for a carne asada or fish something another, maybe the carnitas just aren’t good and something else will save this place to me who knows. Enough people swear by this market so I’m sure another shot couldn’t hurt.

Yummy Mexican food for affordable prices! =) My favorite thing to get is their breakfast burrito(available all day) —- $ 3.69 each! Service is always as quick as can be & the ladies behind the counter are friendly. =) Don’t be shy about asking for special orders, they do it all the time!

I wish I could give this place 10 stars for their amazing food. I always get the burritos. This is the only place that I order burritos from. Every item they put in their burritos is delicious. Seriously go to Garden Market head straight back and order yourself a burrito. Grab a drink on your way to the register and enjoy that foodgasm!

Many people have raved about Garden Market’s burritos so I decided to order several for my family and try them out. What an utter disappointment! Ugh. If anyone thinks their food is good they have no tastebuds. I didn’t like anything. Yes it was edible but not good by my standards. I will not try it again.

Garden Market is an excellent store that’s a hidden treasure in Santa Paula. Many people view it as a regular market store, but it offers plenty more; especially, their ‘cocina’ in the back. They have the best tortas in all of Santa Paula; they offer delicious pork tamales; and they have liquor and a butcher shop to fill your barbecue needs. They have a wonderful staff that is helpful and amicable. If you’re in Santa Paula, and in need of a quick but delicious lunch, head on over to Garden Market.

Rating des Ortes: 4 Oxnard, CA
The front entrance is a general store that carries typical grocery items and the back is where the kitchen prepares hot foods. The burritos are cheap here. I had a carnitas burrito and it was good for $ 3.85. I wish it had more ingredients(maybe should have gotten the supreme burrito because it does have more) but my carnitas burrito was tender and filling :) Thanks Santa Paula for having cheaper burritos than Oxnard lol
