Great East Butcher has great wings… but terrible service. Two weeks ago they were out of our family’s go to wings so another kind of wing was recommended over the phone. I have celiac disease so I wanted to make sure what I was getting was a wheat free product. After being reassured the product(Carolina wing) was wheat free I ordered some and had a family member pick them up. We cooked the wings and ate them– long story short they were NOT wheat free. When I reported what had happened no action was taken and the employee was unapologetic.

Ok I will first preface this with the fact that I really liked the previous management that ran the Meat House here. I had been going to them everytime I was travelling through heading to a Patriots game in MA where I would pick up a bag of maple bourbon steak tips or teriyaki chicken to thrown down for some mean tailgating. I came in for the first real time of diving in to see what it was all about under new management and I was not as wowed as I would have loved to have been. Although the beer selection was vast and wide with everything from Bar Harbor Ale to about fifteen different Lagunitas that I was a fan of so that was a definite positive and might have to swing by if I am working in Scarborough rather than heading over to RSVP or Trader Joes. Ok now to the things that I didnt like too much was some of the pricing on the meats themselves. Thesame steak tips that I was able to get before here for a steep clip at the time of 19 – 23 dollars ready to go were now in the mid thirties and higher and I was not about to fork over that kind of cash when i could just buy regular and marinate them myself for much much cheaper. Second thing was although they had a crazy amount of people working buzzing around like bees behind the counter and they were right on top of people as they were perusing the plethora of meats(which is a good thing) but they just didnt have the same feel as the previous owners where they would give your sample of something that you wanted to try or would sell you on the product that you might have been unsure of to describe it to the nines. One positive was the selection of the meats under the meat smörgåsbord was very wide and vast and if you are looking for something to pick up fresh, then check this place out. So it definitely had some ups for me and some downers but overall it was ok. I will continue to check though because I think we need a good butcher around the area but at a little more reasonable price.

I love the sausage here and no, no euphemism. The space was formerly The Meathouse and is located across from Marden’s in the area by LaRoux and Bullmoose in Scarborough. This store is not affiliated with the previous ownership. The butcher counter is filled to the max. Chicken stuffed with bacon and cheese, chicken marinated in cilantro lime, aged steaks, pork, bacon, marinated steak tips and so much more. I think I counted 6 – 7 different marinaded chicken the last time I was in. Oh, did I mention bacon wrapped meatloaf? Yup, you read that correctly. Additionally, they have a nice selection of craft beers and other beers, bubbly and wine as well as non-alcoholic drinks. They have dry stuffs and spices as well as a cooler with pasta, veggies, cheese and other items to round out dinner. Along with the breads they also sell garlic buttered sliced baguette. We had these on the grill and yes, you need to get some. Don’t miss out on the small salad bar they have during the day either. The staff is friendly, helpful and if don’t see something… Don’t be afraid to ask. I needed just plain chicken breast and didn’t see it, he had it wrapped up and in my hand in less than 2 minutes. Added bonus, $ 5 off $ 25 or more when you check in on Unilocal

The shop was clean and well stocked. The butcher’s and clerks weren’t as friendly and eager to please as The Meat House. We picked up two chicken cordon bleu. They were marinated in a paprika, oregano, garlic, onion, and lime rub with olive oil. It over-powered the swiss and ham in the chicken. The steak tips looked good, we might try those next time.
