I have an iPhone, a few iPod variations and a work-issued MacBook, but I have to say that besides my phone, I’m not overly impressed by Apple products, making me a perfect candidate to be converted at the Microsoft Store grand opening today. In general, I don’t really get stores like these, but I think that’s due in part to how little budget I have for things that aren’t food, rent, gas, and dedicated to paying off previous dept(turns out, student loans are for life). I went in with an open mind and the intention of walking out with passes to see the totally free Weezer concert they were putting on today in the mall’s annex parking lot… which was a really nice(75 minute) free show. The store is pretty neat and their staff was really friendly, but not in a terrible sales-y way and I felt like the products were more approachable than at the Apple Store(though I’ve admittedly only been to an Apple store once, when my MacBook broke for the millionth time), but I think it has something to do with how everything isn’t white here so I don’t have to worry about my grubby mits getting their stuff all dirty. I was immediately drawn to this thing called a ‘Surface’ that had this keypad/cover thing and was actually really cool, not that I have a use for it, and apparently something that everyone knows about from a commercial that involves a picnic bench, dancing, and young good-loooking people clicking things in and out of the Surface. I guess it was a pretty well-known commercial, but my comprehension level with commercials is very poor and I never actually understood what the thing they were selling was. The store had a special section in back that looks like it’s gearing up for XBox One demos when they become available, but you can also play with the current XBox + Kinect system(which I do own) in store as well. They had a variety of phones in store that my partner had mentioned were supposed to be pretty good. For the opening day special they were offering $ 100 off the Surface + you got a coupon good for $ 25 off any purchase of $ 75 or more, so they definitely made it hard not to go cray and drop a half grand on device that I in no way need. I don’t know that I’m sold either way as far as Microsoft or Apple, I’m convinces I’ll just as easily break and expensive product from either, but it’s nice to have the option to shop around when there is a need for a 1st world electronic device.
