Let me dispense with the obvious dig at this place and just rename it «Douche» now to save time(or perhaps«Trash» is more like it)… With that out of the way, let’s get on with a proper review. There were already plenty of stores, both boutique and department, where one could spend too much money on clothes in the Fashion Square… Nordstrom’s, Guess, Hub, etc… but young adults in Scottsdale were clearly lacking something that was not only ridiculously expensive, but that also made you look like a complete retard who spent too much. Some people aim for exactly that look and this store is for them. Originally opened in ’85 on Melrose in LA, this new Scottsdale store is an upscale version of the small trendy chain. This store has only just opened a few months ago and has spent most of its existence thus far fronted by mall refurbishing construction that’s been going on for awhile now. That hasn’t prevented it from catching an eye though… the sign is very Melrose and their window dressings are as well — to an extreme degree. I would venture to say that this store is the beginning of a new trend to make the area a fashion destination and tourism hotspot. The Hub previously held that duty, but was far too understated and hidden to make much of an impact. This store is more in-your-face and quite the opposite of the Hub even though both share a common customer base. I don’t know whether this is a good thing or not, but this along with the upscale shops along the Waterfront should go a long way to creating a population of people walking around looking silly and spending a lot of money to do so. The clothing lines inside Stash are much like regular clothes except everything is bedazzled or covered in artsy craftsy stitchings and decorations. The price tags are good for a laugh. The customers are as well… mostly(heavily assisted) good-looking people with too much money(or those wanting to make it look like they have too much money to spend). Most of the clothing is really ugly and more douche than hip or fashionable. Consider the look that Elvis cultivated after becoming fat and Vegasized… gaudy and silly. Elvis at least had the persona to carry off such a look — most people who would wear clothes from Stash I imagine lack a unique personality to match. People with flashy enough personalities to carry off flashy attention-grabbing clothes are more than capable of putting together their own looks. My limited understanding of fashion tells me that Stash is not fashionable. It’s shit. Overpriced shit. It’s not like the Hub where you can pay $ 300 for a plain black vest jacket that you can get something that looks exactly the same for $ 35… the shit at Stash is all very unique looking — which is a good thing because it would be quite awful if this look spread. That’s not to say that the look you get at Stash is unique — it’s very generic douche. I regard Stash as Hot Topic for adults… I suggest a visit for a laugh, but keep your wallets in your purses or pockets. If you wear clothes from this place, nobody will take you seriously or see you as professional or classy… they’ll see you as a pretentious asshole. To be fair though, I’ve seen a few items there that look somewhat cool, but I don’t know that I’d spend that kind of money for any of it. EDIT on Dec 30: I revisited this store out of curiosity — I checked a price tag of a t-shirt sitting folded on a table and it read over 400 bucks. You read that right too — over 400 bucks. I scoffed at it and a nearby Stash employee offered up his 2 cents saying that those shirts are great and that he owns 4 of them. He then proceeded to say he didn’t even get an employee discount. I was dumbstruck and couldn’t think of much to say beyond«that’s insane» — he replied with«Work hard and spend hard» as if this were his motto. At that moment, I remembered what it was like to truly hate someone I didn’t even know. What an unbelievable asshole. On top of that, he spends fucking 400 plus bucks on a COTTON T-SHIRT and he WORKSINRETAIL! HELLO!!! I want him to die and I want to burn that store to the ground.
