BAR/BRI

I recommend BarBri because (a) the study materials are good and comprehensive, (b) there is structure to help break down the vast task of studying for the bar, © the student helpers and administrators are very helpful and genuinely care about helping you pass the bar; (d) many of the lecturers are great and even enjoyable — Contracts, Corporations, Family Law, for example, (e) if you have any substantive legal questions via email, they answer promptly and very helpfully in a way that explains complexities and nuances and breaks down the law. However, be warned that they purposely make the Bar Exam sound scary and emphasize that anyone, even a smart and prepared student, is likely to fail unless they study 8 – 10 hours a day (which is not true). I think this is unnecessary and that simply providing statistics and giving a caveat that everyone studies differently would be better. In addition, they definitely grade down on essays to motivate you to study; if the actual bar examiners graded the way BarBri graders do, the passage rate would be REALLY low. In a nutshell: BarBri is useful, the people are friendly and helpful, the materials are excellent, but try not to let the scare tactics get to your head and trust yourself if you feel confident with the material and prepared. Watching lectures and doing about 70% of the work was excellent preparation for the bar exam.

I do have to warn potential students, however. They make it a practice of under-​grading your essays to motivate you to work harder. While it does work on that end, it also causes otherwise good essay writers to freak out… something wholly unnecessary prior to taking the bar. I would give only 3 or 4 stars because of that «feature», but a promise is a promise. I passed the bar, Bar/​Bri gets my 5-​star review.
