I’ve been going to Johnny’s for over 15 years. Let me tell you about the great things he does:
1. Takes same day appointments. Virtually unheard of these days. And will often stay late for his regulats to get them in.
2. Very meticulous about every cut
3. $ 30 haircut is cheap for what he gives you. Go to a downtown salon a pay $ 50. He’s a one man operation in a U District storefront. Can you imagine the rent overhead?
4. When regulars come in who’ve been through trying times, ie a death in family, etc., he gives cut free.
5. If he can tell you’re not in a talking mood, he stays quiet.
I recently went to a party where he was honored by his regular customers. There were over a hundred. Many of those he has cut their hair for over thirty years… since they themselves were students at UW.
I dread the day he retires, don’t know who I will go to that offers that kind of personalized service.

I recently moved neighborhoods and this meant I needed to find a new place to get my ears lowered. After exploring my neighborhood, I noticed Johnny’s Barbershop — and since it had the word «John» in the name, I figure it had to be good.
I called to see if he took appointments. He said that he did, which was nice so I didn’t show up only to realize that there were 3 people ahead of me in line waiting to get their haircut too. I arrived a bit early and found comfortable chairs to sit in to wait. There were several magazines to choose from to browse while waiting, including some surprising «adult» choices. I of course only looked at them for their articles.
While I was getting my hair cut, I learned that Johnny has been cutting hair for over 40 years! He was very meticulous while cutting my hair and made sure that every hair was trimmed to perfection. The haircut took a little over a half hour.
There wasn’t any sign posted about how much he charged for a haircut and I was a bit taken aback when he told me that he was only going to charge me $ 30. I’m not sure how much he charges his regular customers, but that seemed a bit outrageous to me. I did get a pretty nice cut from a very nice man, but I think I’ll be getting my next haircut somewhere else for half the price.
