Quiet, calm atmosphere. The entrance includes a «fireplace,» chairs, coffee-table, sign-in table, and various niceties. Exercise is available for use in an open area, across the hall from an even more open TV room, which also serves sometimes as a puzzle-building area. And across the hall from that is one of the two dining rooms. In one area, they assign seating, so the residents are always seated at the same table with the same set of fellow diners; it would be nice if residents were allowed to move around and select their own seats, for whatever reasons they might have. There is a small library with a large table and chairs. Some residents play cards there, and it could be used for small conferences. There is another room, more private, where a conference with a few more people could meet. There used to be a couple of guest rooms, offered for modest rent, for family members visiting residents, but I think they converted those into other use, possibly rooms for residents. They used to have an ice-cream machine that residents could make avail of, all week-long. They have since reduced the availability of ice cream to only certain days of the week.(There is the public reason, and then there is the private motivation, and sometimes the two are in agreement; I don’t know if they are in agreement on this issue, however.) There are large lawns, and many apartments have glass doors opening to the outside. Inner apartments’ doors open to enclosed courts with nice lawns, young trees, a rabbit or two, curious birds, and sunlight. Individual apartments are kept very clean by staff, and repairs seem to be handled quickly and properly. A bus takes residents to certain stores in town. I think one or two churches used to provide religious services of some kind at Heartland, but I don’t know if any are currently doing that. This might be a 4-star establishment, but my rating is influenced by the removal of guest rooms, reduction of ice-cream days, and assigning residents where to sit for meals. Time and future visits may bring me to modify my rating.
