This is not the store where I do my big grocery shopping. But is great for the basics. The staff is friendly and helpful. Additionally, these people are good neighbors. They support the neighborhood schools and community activities.

It’s been at least 3 years since I’ve moved away from the area and boy have things changed. Came in at the PEAK of the day and needed a money order for a family member. As I approached the customer service area I noticed it was like a ghost town. A manager informed me that it would be a little while before someone could help me. The entire flow of the store has changed and its flowed over into the customer service of the entire store. Never again!’

People I know call this«the ghetto Brookshire’s,» but I cringe inside at the inherent racism of using ghetto to mean run down and shitty. Which is why I call it «the shitty Brookshire’s.» A generally poor selection and an overall sense of crappiness haunt every nook and cranny. The store borders some less prosperous neighborhoods and so you get some shabbily dressed and sometimes crazy customers. A man once said«hey girl,» to me. And no girl am I. A good place to go if you don’t feel the need to dress beyond the very basics, or are doing laundry. It will probably not have what you are looking for, unless what you are looking for is bologna. They have since redone their storefront and remodeled, but to what end.

This is the most rundown Brookshire’s that I know of, in existence. Which made it all the more shocking that Sandra Bullock and Nia Long shot a scene in the parking lot here for the film«Premonition». Now, every time, I set foot in the parking lot I’m like, ‘Sandra Bullock and Nia Long stood in this very parking lot at some time…’ This store does need a major overhaul and it does seem dirty, but that just may be some of its’ charm coming through as well. I’m pretty sure this store hasn’t changed much since 1983 or so.

I just moved a few blocks away and on my way home from the gym, I popped in for a few items: avocados, tomatoes, kale, bananas, and a certain brand of peanut butter. First off, they didn’t carry the brand I was looking for– one that is available at Kroger, Target, and the Brookshire’s on Line. That was a bummer but a 5 minute drive down the road could remedy that problem. I moved on to the produce section. I actually saw one of the managers walking around and he nodded at me as I walked into the section. If I were him, I wouldn’t have even met eye contact; I’d actually remain hidden behind the scenes in an office than be seen walking that floor. Generally speaking, a produce section should be comprised of fresh items, correct? Like, your avocados should not all have the consistency of a sponge and be buzzing with fruit flies, right? Signs touting sale prices were all around, but everything was disgusting and covered in bugs. The bananas were black. Some of the tomatoes had mold growing on them. They didn’t have kale, but if they had, it probably would’ve been wilting and turning brown and yellow like the lettuce. I even spotted a small package of «fresh thyme» that was wilted and faded, and contained brown water that seeped out of it. It was an embarrassment. I’d pop in here for toilet paper maybe, but for food purchases you’re better suited to take a left on Line and drive down to the cleaner, better stocked Brookshire’s down the road.
