I realize it is somewhat juvenile of me to laugh at the name, but I can’t help it. I also can’t help but be impressed by this new sporting goods store that just opened in Slidell. Located in the brand new Fremaux Town Center, this store appeals to my inner dude like only a sporting goods store can. Since I am an equal opportunity reviewer, I will first focus on the section of the store geared towards females: they have women’s clothing. Now that we have that out of the way, on to my review. Hunting I was pretty sad when I realized Dick’s doesn’t sell handguns. There are few activities more badass and manly than perusing a fine selection of handguns. What they did have, however, was a giant selection of rifles and shotguns. There was no one working in that area so I couldn’t fondle any, but the prices looked fairly reasonable, especially on some of the .22 rifles. If hunting birds or large animals is more your style, they also had higher caliber rifles and shotguns. As with most stores, shotgun ammo was available on the shelves with pistol and rifle ammo behind the counter. From what I could see, it looked like they had a good supply of most home defense and target ammo for somewhat reasonable prices. Even the .223 was decently priced(for 2014). In addition to the firearms, there was a large archery section, including what looked like an archery range. There was also a good selection of knives, machetes and even a tomahawk. If you are looking for survival gear, they have what you need. Camping The camping selection here was first rate. In addition to the tents, sleeping bags and camp stoves, they had an excellent selection of backpacking food. Anyone who has been backpacking will tell you that the lighter your pack, the easier your hike. Dick’s had a large amount of freeze dried items which would taste funny, but definitely save weight. They even had astronaut ice cream which I must purchase whenever I find it. Don’t ask me why, but I think that stuff is super cool. This section is also where I found a new folding chair. I am not sure of the official name, but it’s one of those chairs that folds and stores in a bag. I am sure you’ve seen them at the beach, kids soccer games and Mardi Gras Parades. Well, for only $ 30, I got a brand new chair in stylish realtree camouflage. No longer will I be at the beach in a plain blue chair. Hell yes! The aforementioned sections are where I spent the majority of my time, but the store had plenty more to offer. I saw shoes, sports equipment, fishing gear, etc. It really is a one stop shop. The staff I encountered on the floor were helpful and friendly. My only complaint involves the checkout process. I am not sure if it was because the store is new, but checkout was painfully slow. Despite having three cashiers working the wait was far too long. Other than that, I loved the place. If you are in the Slidell area and like dude type things, check out Dick’s. See, that is hilarious.
