This is the 4th annual International Festival in Snellville, but the first year I’ve attended. I’m still feeling confused about the whole event, and I left about 3 hours ago. For starters, the posted start time on the signs around town said 12pm, which a parade starting promptly at 12. We showed up around 11:45, and almost nothing was set up anywhere except some bouncy castles for the kids. It was a nice day though, so we hung out in the shade and waited. Around 12:15, someone announced the parade was about to start. I’m not sure what I was expecting, possibly a parade that runs down a street with some music or something, but the parade was just people holding their country’s flag and walking around a small green space in a circle. The countries were announced as they walked around, but it was pretty underwhelming, to say the least. The thing I was most excited about was the food! I read online that you have to exchange your money at the«currency station» for tickets to try the various country’s foods. Well, one ticket=one dollar, and some food trucks prices weren’t exactly on the dollar. I bought a delicious slice of cheesecake from Tracy’s Tasties for $ 6.50, but they took just 6 tickets. A nice deal for me, but I did feel it wasn’t very fair to the business. Despite my eating cheesecake(haha!), I was in the mood for some international cuisine. Sadly, it was mostly regular American mainstream restaurants were there. Cabana Grill isn’t the authentic Mexican cuisine I was looking for, and other vendors included BBQ and a pizza place. There was one table offering Caribbean food that looked delicious, but that was about it. There were booths set up representing several countries, but in all honesty they didn’t have much to offer. A high-school had a fencing team, there was jump rope to practice double-dutch, etc. Overall, I respect the people who came out to genuinely share their cultures, but it all seemed thrown together by the planners and so underwhelming.
