I absolutely love When Pigs Fly. I stopped in again last night to pick up a loaf of savory bread to bake stuffed with cheese, butter, garlic and chives. It went over really well!(With those ingredients, though, you could hardly go awry!) I also adore their chocolate bread and make a point of picking up a loaf whenever I can. Friends are often surprised that the bread I picked up is not rye or pumpernickel, but a delicious, moist chocolate bread. It distinctly does not have the sweetness of cake, which is perfect, because it is bread. It’s rich but totally worth eating even if you don’t like really sweet sweets. The cocoa in it is delicious, and there are little chunks of chocolate that melt in your mouth throughout. They have a slicer that they’ll happily throw your loaves into so you don’t have to worry about that. Some of the breads are crumbly and don’t slice super well, but they usually let you know in case you worry about that sort of thing. There are always samples of new and tasty breads when I’m there. The latest I tried was a blueberry granola bread, so good! They also take and sell Brown School cards. Okay, now that I’ve started a stampede for their chocolate bread, I hope they make more so they’re not out soon :) Enjoy the bread!

There are two bread places you should go to in Boston/Cambridge: Iggy’s and When Pigs Fly. Go to Iggy’s for the savory bread/focaccia/traditional dinner table bread. Come to When Pigs Fly for fruity/sweet/exotic flavors. They have really fun flavors like blueberry with almonds and granola, cranberry and orange, chocolate(yes it’s doable and it exists!), pumpkin and apple, and others. You won’t find those combos anywhere else, and certainly of similar quality. Their loaves are HUGE, and lasts me months. I actually cut half and freeze and then eat the rest. The frozen ones taste just as good so the bread is magical! Their bread puddings are also a must try. A little too sweet, but it goes great with coffee/tea.

When I lived in the area(a few years ago now), this place was amazing. Based on recent reviews it seems like it hasn’t changed so I want to add my input now. Loved the chocolate, apple & cinnamon and the honey wheat loaves in particular. Just overall great fresh bread every day and service was always very friendly and helpful. Loved it!

I frequent When Pigs on a bi weekly basis. I’ve tried a good number of their specialty breads and have not had a single complaint. For me my true favorite is the german sourdough. If you’re in the are, and like fresh rustic bread then I’d defiantely give this place a try.

I’m trying to be very mindful of how many 5 star reviews I give, but this bread place deserves it! I really think this is the best bread(considering taste, price, quality, service) you can get around the area. Most of their loaves are $ 5 – 7 and they can slice it for you. They generally have some kinds for sampling. They have really great flavors(ie. chocolate(great for french toast!), blueberry granola). It’s kind of gross that I can eat a whole loaf alone in 2 days. They also sell cookies(~$ 2 – 3) and bread pudding($ 5), that I’m interested in trying, but it always seems wrong to not get bread instead They also sell honeys/sauces

Holy Bread! I’ve been getting bread from them at the Kendall Farmer’s Market over the last few weeks. It’s insanely delicious. There’s a ton of little delicious morsels packed into delicious dough that is baked and then packed into my mouth. Everyone I’ve met from the shop has been great and helpful too. To get: Olive Loaf; Orange Cranberry, Walnut & Ginger; BLUEBERRYOATMEAL. Do it. You deserve it.

Im afraid i don’t quite share other Unilocalers’ fondness for this place. About half the time I’ve bought bread here I’ve been disappointed. Apparently I’ve been ordering the wrong thing(bread not a pretzel) but this place does specialize in bread so I assumed it would be great. Once I got a loaf that was very underdone(chewy and soggy and mush in the middle) and once I got a loaf that was just unbelievably bland. The only good bread I’ve had was the olive loaf, which was really, really good. When I get a levelup coupon here I will come get an olive loaf, but otherwise I am not a big fan.

This tiny bread store is the absolute best. Walked over to get bread and soft pretzels for a weekend picnic. I have never seen so many loaves of bread in such a small space! $ 4 — 6 per loaf, which seems quite inexpensive for bread this good. Hearty and delicious. There are also free samples — one savory and one sweet. I can’t begin to describe my feelings toward the soft pretzels, which are chewier than any I’ve had before(in a good way).

The bread from here is amazing. Toasts up amazingly. I would recommend the sourdough, cinnamon raisin, cranberry orange walnut. The chocolate is wonderful too especially for dessert. I mean carbs are the best dessert right?!

If you’ve had When Pigs Fly bread from your local grocery store, you know how good this bread tastes. Imagine getting it fresh at their own store, for half the price. This little store has enough space to fit two or three customers, because two walls are floor to ceiling bread. Lots of different varieties, include three types of sourdough, pretzels, rolls. I haven’t tried all the different varieties, but all the ones I’ve had have been high quality and addictive. $ 4 for a whole loaf here at the bakery, that’s the same price as a half loaf at the grocery store.

I love this place. I went for the first time last year with some friends… We had just come from an exercise class and when we saw the wonderful display of carbs, we just couldn’t resist. The man behind the counter was very helpful as we debated the pros and cons of the different varieties. My favorite is by far the Six Grain and Pumpkin Seed bread. Great crust, delicious center. Reminds me of the bread I had when living in Germany. I’d love to see them come out with a Sunflower seed loaf!

Love this place! I absolutely love bread, and this shop is one of the reasons why. There are so many varieties that are unique and delicious, and the staff is so friendly. If I could buy and eat bread by the loaf, this would be the place to go.

Orange cranberry bread is beyond wonderful. You want it, you need it, it should be a staple all year long. We bought one with the idea of making stuffing from it for thanksgiving but alas, no restraint, we ate the whole thing before hand. Lesson, buy more than one.

Yeah, it’s great. If you get excited about bread(and what sensible person doesn’t?) you won’t be able to resist it. The shop is small and cute, and the staff have always been extremely friendly and helpful. You can buy loaves sliced or unsliced. Great for a dinner party or special meal. You can also find some of the breads for sale at local stores like Star Market in Porter Square, though the shop on Highland Ave has a wider selection. I’ve only ever seen the chocolate bread for sale there, and it’s amazing – dense, fudgy, more like cake than bread. Decadent!

I absolutely love coming here. Into this tiny shop of bread heaven! The people who work here are so nice and will always slice you pieces of different breads to try. When Pigs Fly bread is sooo delcious. The only problem with it is how good it is because then I eat all of it so fast and become a yucky carb monster! The hot pepper olive bread is hands down my favorite one. The garlic onion spinach is also a solid choice. The sun dried tomato bread make amazing grilled cheese sandwiches :). Just whip up some tomato soup too and you are in for one of the best and easiest afternoon meals of your life!!! And what’s that you say? You like dessert? Well I’m here to tell you When Pigs Fly can also satisfy your sweet tooth with their sweet breads, like their amazing cinnamon sugar one. Good luck choosing which bread you’re going to buy!!! PS the red hummus is also delicious

This place is OK, but not the bakery to go to if you’re looking for 100% whole grain bread. When I visited the shop, the staff members were unaware of what that meant(warning sign). After reading the ingredients, I identified only one loaf of bread that was 100% and bought it. A piece of advice — develop a good tasting, fluffy whole grain bread! Just one or two! Anyway, I bought the 100%. Big mistake. It was hard, dense, bran-y, and did not really taste much like bread. There was no softness or fluff. It reminded me of the German pumpernickel bread(Mestemacher) that you can buy packaged in the store.

Absolutely fantastic bread, and the prices are just slightly higher than what you’d pay for a generic loaf at a grocery store. The ingredient lists are provided right next to each loaf, so you can see that your bread isn’t filled with additives or preservatives. This is well worth the extra buck or two in my opinion! I usually go for the 100% whole grain loaf, but when you’re looking for a treat there are various savory and sweet breads(such as chocolate bread) that are much more interesting. The cookies certainly aren’t the focal point of this bakery, but the triple chocolate salted caramel cookie is ridiculously good.

Love When Pigs Fly. Love the samples that they give out at their Davis location. My favorite is the baby spinach-garlic-onion. It’s super flavorful, to the point where I probably repel vampires after I eat a couple of slices(the other thing — the loaves are pretty flat, so it is a bit difficult to make sandwiches with if they slice the bread for you. I usually eat my bread on the side with my lunch). I’m also a fan of the olive. If I liked sweet breads more than I’d like pastries, I’d probably get the lemonade and carrot cake breads more often. Note that the texture of the bread is pretty moist on the inside and dry on the outside. One time my mom brought six loaves to bring back to her friends… out-of-state. That’s right, she lugged them in her suitcase because she too loves When Pigs Fly.

This bread will surely spice up any sandwich. Heck, I’d forgo the ham and cheese and just eat the stuff plain. The sights and smells of this small space are enough to have you buying every loaf in the cases. They’ll also slice your loaf up right there for you! But sights and smells are surely not enough. You need some taste in this huge bread-buying decision, and fortunately these Piggies do not disappoint. They offer various samples at the counter from savory, chewy ciabatta to the sweet, raisin-ridden breakfast loaf. My personal faves have been the spicy pepper and the bread pudding. The prices are also super reasonable at around $ 5 each. Don’t be aloof; grab a loaf!
