Sonora Union Democrat

Sadly a local newspaper was unable to print the correct date of the Memorial Services of a lifetime Sonora resident.
A family member spoke with the second in command at the newspaper to ask for a correction and was told that the paper could not list it as a «correction» but would instead print a «notice». The family and the funeral home were flooded with calls asking which day the service really was as the Democrat didn’t print the «notice» as a correction so people didnt notice the date change. People just thought it was a death notice. The family was told that the paper «doesn’t print corrections» and our concerns were unaddressed.
Over 200 were in attendance at the Memotial Service. Unfortunately approximately 20 additional people showed up at the Elks Club to pay their respects and visit with the family the next day as, of course, that was the day the Democrat incorrectly printed.
The Editor was supposed to call the family and never did. An apology was never offered. It’s hard enough to have a death in the family. The Democrat only added to the pain.
I remember when the newspaper was titled the Daily Union Democrat and we locals referred to it by its initials as «The DUD». They’ve changed the name… but it and its Editorial staff are still Duds.

I really enjoy our local newspaper and I think they do a great job. I have one complaint that is probably shared amongst other locals as well… they don’t deliver the paper in a timely manner. I don’t know if they just need more employees to deliver or what. Just don’t expect to get the paper in the news stands (or your drive way) first thing in the morning… it’s more like after 2pm.
