Based on the great reviews from Unilocal,my husband and I decided to stop in for dinner on our way home from Ridgefield. When we walked in the door we stood around for several minutes waiting for a hostess, bartender, or waitperson to help us with a table. The place was very busy but no staff anywhere in sight. We walked into the dining area where my husband finally flagged down a server who was very nice and sat us right away. In the restaurant’s defense, it was a very busy night and the servers were clearly doing all they could to keep up and were always very pleasant despite how hectic it was. It took quite a while for our food to come after ordering and when it did it was really just mediocre. I had a crab cake sandwich and my husband had a buffalo chicken salad. The place had a nice, rustic vibe and the servers were very nice, but it’s not a place we’ll go to again.

Very good food with excellent and friendly service. Went with my 2-year old granddaughter who had a great time running around on the lawn in the back. Clearly popular with families who eat around 6. Good cocktails and reasonably priced.

My wife and I dined at this wonderful establishment last night, and we have nothing but praise for it! This was our second time visiting, and we already look forward to the next time we will go! The restaurant itself is in an historic inn, and it is lovely! The atmosphere is comfortable and rustic. Whether being served in the dining room up front(with a gorgeous stone fireplace), or on the patio in the back, the ambiance is great. There is a back dining room for special events and larger parties, although we were afforded the special-ness of being able to dine there, as the main dining room was filled. There is also a quaint pub there, where you can dine as well as drink. Steven, the manager, was accommodating and wonderful throughout our visit, making us feel valued and very special. He has a wonderful, sincere personality, that helped make our visit even more special than ever. The whole staff was hospitable, friendly, and warm, checking on our satisfaction, and interacting wonderfully as a team. Our server, Travis, was polite, friendly, attentive, and accommodating. He personally whipped up a sauce for my crab cakes because I could not eat the original sauce that came with it due to an allergy. Travis made sure everything was satisfactory, and he was an extremely pleasant and efficient server. The food? OMG!!! The Maryland Crab Cakes are to die for!!! There is hardly ANY filler in them(and what there is are lovely Panko breadcrumbs!!), and they are practically ALL crab meat! There are two VERY generous crab cakes to an entrée, and they are served with a very tasty remoulade sauce. As I mentioned before, if an allergy is present, the staff and management are extremely willing to help substitute something that is just as delicious. The Bleu Cheese dressing for our salads was homemade, with chunks of cheese in it, and such a lovely taste to the dressing. The Mashed Potatoes had actual small chunks of potato in them, adding a wonderful texture to the delicious whipped potatoes. Excellent! The Steamed Vegetables were wonderfully al dente, and it was a very lovely medley of carrots, green beans, yellow squash, and zucchini. The presentation of all the dishes was beautiful, and the portions were generous. We were totally satisfied when we were done with dinner, until… DESSERT!!! And then, we were INHEAVEN! I had the Chocolate Peanut Butter Torte, which was the most decadently WONDERFUL combination of chocolate cake, peanut butter, rich dark chocolate on top, and chocolate sauce beautifully drizzled on it. It was like the most heavenly grown up Funny Bone you could imagine! My wife had one of the dessert specials of the evening: Frozen Chocolate Mousse with Homemade Whipped Cream. She described the dessert as a luscious thick, creamy, chilled rich chocolate mousse, perfectly blended and so satisfying. The Whipped Cream added a perfect accompaniment to the mousse. If you have never been to The Horse and Hound, treat yourself to a spectacular dining experience. If you have been there, know that everything is just as good or better as before. As for us??? South Salem, NY here we come, as soon as we can get away again! Thank you Steven, for your hospitality, and thank you, Horse and Hound, for the wonderful restaurant that your owners and staff are making you! P. S. For those of you who utilize«Restaurant.com», this wonderful restaurant participates in that program!

Went for a late night dinner. Warm welcome. French onion soup was awesome! Steak sandwich was cooked to perfection. My husband had a burger that he said was cooked perfectly. Service was friendly, food was good. You can’t go wrong here.

I have also enjoyed the food the atmosphere and company at the hound. I always thought about writing a review but somehow never got around to it. Last night I had the Rack of Lamp that was out of this world. Perfectly cooked generous portion creamy mashed potatoes, absolutely divine. Don’t miss it…

This was quite the find. My wife took us here on a suggestion from a friend, and we will definitely be back. The inside is small. A 200+ year old home converted to a restaurant. Great, uneven floors and low ceilings. Makes you feel like the meal was made over a wood oven, but it didn’t taste like it. Service was good. Sat us quickly(oddly wasn’t packed on Saturday night). Quick drink delivery and ready with menus and specials. The server was very friendly. We couldn’t remember her name, but she worked there for 16 years, and sold us well. We started with the firecracker shrimp at her suggestion(4 of them, very good). They include a house salad with the entrée which is nice and a long-forgotten tradition. If I had one complaint, the salad was underwhelming. But not enough to go down to a 4. We split the chicken silvana and osso bucco(at the waitresses’ behest). And wow was she right. The meat just fell off the bone. Tasted very fresh. Veggies were good. Silvana was great– light cream sauce and panko crust. Cream seemed to be a theme here, and they did it well. We saved(made) room for desserts because they looked so good. We split a chocolate peanut butter thing and a praline dish. PB was better but both were good. Definitely gained a couple pounds this meal. Will have to eat kale for a couple days before my next trip back. A new favorite of ours. We’ll be back soon.

Great place with a home away from home feeling. The bartender(Steve) was very helpful and knowledgeable about the area. Will definitely be back!

Quite a wedding caterer! This is an overdue review for some great food! My husband and I got married last year in the Sal J. Prezioso Mountain Lakes Park — the Horse and the Hound was one of the park’s recommended caterers. They were great — I highly recommend them. We did a series of appetizers by the park’s lake, including some tables set with cheese and crudités, and the apps got rave, rave reviews(esp spanikopita and firecracker shrimp). Everyone praised the dinner as well — I can best speak to the Pork Tenderloin with Apples and Calvados which was amazing. We had about 200 people present. People got plated a little slower than we’d planned — but everyone was having a great time, and had been well fed with the great apps. Wasn’t a problem. The food was just what we wanted — delicious and well done, not fussy, just very good. Sue and Megan knew the space, knew the park staff, helped in so many ways. They helped me order beer and wine, told me how many water glasses to rent, etc, and helped me make some choices to keep it in my budget. We met on site in person a twice to be sure of the set up. They really went above and beyond, and provided great food for an affordable price, esp for the NYC region. They’re great!

We went to The Horse & Hound Restaurant in South Salem. NY last night with great anticipation for a very special dinner. Having been to this restaurant many times in past years we found it to be mediocre and not at all as we had remembered it. I ordered the Shell Steak 18 oz. medium rare which came closer to medium and found it to be tasteless and rather tough and my husband’s Filet Mignon was dry even cooked at medium. The food presentation was very uninteresting and colorless… mashed potatoes, julienne zucchini, yellow squash and carrots which all blended together and looked as though they had been reheated a few times. My memory of this beautiful inn was also diminished with glass over the tablecloths and everyday silverware on the table… not the way it used to be… I’m sorry to say my disappoint after raving about going here for dinner causes me to now say… I won’t be back…

Felt like I was home literally! Haven’t been there in 12 years and what a mistake, right around the corner… a friend took me there for dinner last Friday night, I ordered the ribs and guess what? They were great and I have ribs all over the country! Amazing… sometimes the best stuff is under your nose. Sometimes you have to breath. The burgers looked great, the lamb from the next table looked better! They even gave a decent portion of vanilla ice cream… a must for guys and ribs… everyone knows that! If it’s great next time I will go to five stars!!!

Love this little place! I stopped in a couple of times while visiting my in-laws and enjoyed drinks and appetizers at the bar. The food was pretty good, but the service at the bar and the fine selection of single malts made the alcohol portion of the bar the real star. I did see some tasty entrees come out of the kitchen while I was there, and I look forward to giving the food a more thorough try the next time I’m visiting the area.

Oh Horse and Hound… Love love love! This is our local haunt, a fantastic one at that! I’ve yet to encounter a mediocre dish and the servers consistently strive to exceed our dining expectations! Comfortable and convenient with heart warming grub, a must visit!

The horse and hound has good food and a great atmosphere. The burgers there are surprisingly good. I went to a bat mitzvah there and the space was a bit small but the outside seating area worked perfectly and the food(especially the apps) were good

The Horse and Hound has been a favorite of mine for years. I have a few top-pick menu items but number one is the Filet Mignon. It’s so incredibly tender and the mushroom sauce is silky and delicious. The homemade balsamic dressing that comes with the salad is bread-dipping-worthy and don’t forget the garlic-infused olive-oil. Be adventurous and spread one of the cloves on a piece of bread. I’m serious. The bar menu has a wide selection of pub food(grilled chicken sandwich is tasty) and glasses are never left empty. Sue, the owner, is friendly, inviting and always sincere. Can’t wait to go back!

Excellent food and vibe here. Restaurant side for more formal dining but still on the casual side. Never know who you might find here! Bar side has great selection of refreshments and bar fare. Entertainment on select weekend nights makes this a fun gathering spot for friends of any age group! Don’t miss this one if you are in town!

Weather you are going to eat from the bar menu or the dinner menu you wont be disappointed! The Horse and Hound is cozy and quaint. The owner Silvano and owner/chef, Sue and their staff will take good care of you and make you feel like family. The bar menu has burgers, nachos, po boys, chicken parm and some amazing french onion soup. The dinner menu has a great salads, salmon, French chicken, stuffed shrimp, filet mignon and linguine just to name a few. You have to try the stout on tap and stay for a set of great live music for all ages. Horse and Hound is always a great choice for us. You’ll feel right at home.

I’ve only been here 1x and sat at the bar but I will be back! The bartender was friendly, as were the patrons. Pub food a bit greasy — but they had some healthier options. Wasn’t expecting much… it’s a pub! Love the atmosphere — looks like a great place to grab a beer or a quick bite to eat. Will be back again!

Ordered the penne ala vodka with shrimp and scallops. Big mistake. While this is a restaurant, it is also a bar/pub. When in a pub, order pub food. If I go back, that is my plan. The penne were tasteless and gummy/gluey, the sauce bland, the shrimp clearly frozen and tasteless, and the scallops fishy. On the other hand, having lived in the area for 12 years, I had never been here, and I WILL go back to sit at the bar and have a beer or two. Friendly bartender and very warm, cozy Revolutionary War atmosphere. I’d give it two stars or less for the food, though maybe a pub burger is better. I would give it 4 stars for atmosphere and the fact that you feel transported to another era, so they get the benefit of the doubt with 3 stars.
