I’ve been to Macy’s stores in 10+ states around the US, and it is surprising how much one location can vary from another. They carry the same products and brands, but the stores themselves can make it feel like a completely different experience. Without knowing the area, I searched for the closest Macy’s to my house to buy some trousers, and the Northland Mall came up. First off, the mall it’s at is like an ethnic melting pot turning into a ghost town. Half of the stores are closed up, and the others are non-national brands. With store names like«Gor ‘Jess» and other strangely spelled signs. It’s hard to feel like Macy’s is a classy department store if you don’t walk directly into the exterior Macy’s entrance. I’ve never seen so few employees in a Macy’s, and this was in mid-December. The peak of holiday shopping. There were piles of clothes unfolded on displays, and many items on the floor. The dressing rooms were full of discarded items and probably hadn’t been attended to in hours. When I checked out, the cashier had a hard time entering my coupon. He scanned it a few times and when it didn’t ring up, told me it was expired(when it was clearly a current coupon). He was pushing the Macy’s charge card in between a side conversation about his crabby high-maintenance wife with another cashier. It’s one thing to be chatty with coworkers… but not when there is a line waiting to check out. Needless to say, I won’t be back.

I was in town for Mother’s Day week and since my birthday is a week later, my mother told me to go to Macy’s to find my birthday gift. The Southfield location is the closest to her house, so I chose that one automatically. I picked out a nice shirt and went to the counter, but the young lady was quite busy that afternoon. At that point I decided to walk back to the side of the Men’s department where I initially found the shirt. A lady had been helping a gentleman with his clothing purchase while I was looking. When I got to the counter(the fragrance counter — located in the middle of the Men’s Dept.), she was helping a young man with a fragrance purchase. When I walked up, she barked«Isn’t she down at the other register?» I told her yes, but she was quite busy, so I walked back down. She told me I had to go back because that was the clothing register. Because I wasn’t in the mood to have my trip ruined by her attitude, I went and waited at the other register. The question I post is did she treat me that way because the man she waited on earlier with the clothing purchase had a shirt and tie on? I was wearing jeans that day because I was on vacation. I am quite sure I have as many suits in my closet and wear my suit and tie just as well, if not better than the gentleman she waited on. GOODBYEMACY’S! My money is more valuable than the attitude.

Macy’s Northland, how do I hate thee? Let me count the ways. 1: pretty much all. I could wax lyrical on the many woes of Macy’s here, but that would be a subsequent waste of time on what was already a complete loss. I suppose this might be the store to attempt shock therapy on an OCD organizer in the family, cheaper than electroshock and presumably less consequences if the sheer mess of mismatched outfits, out of order sizes, and overflowing mini-closets dressed up in a department’s worth of cast-offs induces a breakdown. Macy’s Northland may cause a severe psychological reaction. Stop shopping and get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of a reaction: rage; difficulty speaking; swearing; hyperventilating. If this happens to you, stop shopping at Macy’s and talk with your driver about another store far away before you suffer a disorder. Macy’s messiness may impair your thinking or reactions. Wait at least 2 hours or until you are fully calm before you operate machinery, teach children, perform international negotiations or do anything that requires you to be happy. Do not shop here if you have consumed alcohol, just woken up or had a bad day. You are sharing in communal pain if you experience: * completely uncaring staff; * trouble finding whatever you were looking for; * noxious odors or funny smells; * torn or stained clothing that you weren’t wearing; * severely cluttered aisles; * no cashiers and/or long line-ups at one queue; or * feeling like you might pass out. Less serious Macy’s Northland side effects may include: * daytime drowsiness, dizziness, weakness, feeling«drugged» or light-headed; * tired feeling, loss of coordination; * irritation; * nervous tics; * localized depression on site; * nausea, constipation, diarrhea, upset stomach; * psychological trauma; * headache; and * running outside cursing in foreign languages. Avoiding Macy’s Northland should be habit-forming and used by everyone you know. Keep any innocents ignorant of the evil in a secure place where others cannot get to them, like a much better Macy’s or Macy’ .

Reviewing Macy’s Optical… I’ve been to Macy’s Optical several times in the past which was OK but this was the worst time. I only came to get a couple of glasses tighten and one repair(I love warranty). When I arrived there wasn’t anyone in the department, so since I’ve worked for Macy’s in the past; I just figure a bathroom break. Well NO… I narrowly waited to 30 mins for someone to arrive. You are probably worrying did I get someone paged over… Well I did try to get help from Shoe department right next to Optical but when I asked basically the person said«she’s be here shortly!». The Shoe rep didn’t even reach for the phone. Once the sales person did arrive… she didn’t apologize for wait, didn’t greet me with a smile, or didn’t even said«Woo…it’s been a rough day!» This year I might use my vision insurance at Sears or JCP instead of Macy’s. Right now — I’m glad my warranty will expire in March 2011.

By far the best Macys all around town. What I love about this location is that it is the largest of the area stores and they have the biggest selection. There is space to move around without having to constantly say excuse me and bumping into things. This past holiday season I have gotten some great deals here and I am so happy that they now have a Big and Tall section.

This is Macy’s? Perhaps I was spoiled by the Macy’s store at Queens Center Mall, and especially the one in Herald Square, but this is a pathetic disgrace to the well known department store chain. While I will not even attempt to claim that Macy’s is known for selling only the finest and highest quality products available, which would be very far from the truth, I do expect to see a wide selection of products with a few fairly decent brands in stock. While, the perfume department is decent, though you could always just go to Perfumania in the same mall and get it cheaper, and I have heard of people getting good deals on jewelry(but that might be because they can’t sell that crap at full price), what else do they offer for men? Shoes? I wouldn’t even call this a shoe department. Unless you want to count empty shoe racks, plenty of sizes completely out of stock and a very limited selection. Suits? Boxy, mediocre size selection, vanity sized and baggy. A 38R should not fit like a 40R. And while that’s not Macy’s fault, the lack of brand selection makes it almost impossible to find something which fits me. Dress pants, jeans, shirts? Also incredibly baggy, garish and with very few brands to choose from. Where are the slim fitting clothes? They offer it at the Macy’s in Somerset, and to a lesser extent in Fairlane, but absolutely nothing here? Give me a break

I am completely mystified at the concept of keeping this Macy’s open. I wandered into this cavernous wasteland looking to buy a cup of frozen yogurt while my son got a haircut. The shoe department reminded me of the story«The Emperor’s New Clothes». Were the stores buyers not aware that the shoe racks were naked? The jewelry counters looked like they’d endured a smash and grab robbery… where the thieves were smart enough to leave all of the gaudy Baby Phat«baubles» behind. Worse, after waiting 15 minutes while five of the slowest Market Place employees attempted to clear a throng of patrons, I was notified that the frozen yogurt dispenser was down. Would it have been so difficult to post a sign that the yogurt dispenser wasn’t operational? Absolutely ridiculous! Will not return for another dose of the«Macy’s Nightmare».

When I enter the Macy’s location at Northland Center nothing screams«Thanksgiving Day Parade». Seriously, they should just close the entire store except for the cosmetics and men’s department. I walked by the shoe department and thought they were having a going out of business sale. That’s how scarce the selection was. If you are looking for a gift for a male then you could find something here. The cologne and perfume counters have great selections but don’t get too excited, the women’s department is totally blah. You would never know that this is one of the largest Macy’s department stores in the U.S. Go figure.
