Me and 3 other friends last minute found the Taliesin estate and tours; so glad we decided to do it! Our tour guide was excellent, he made the tour fun and playful, yet he was very informative. We chose the house/estate tour and it’s a 2 hour tour, $ 50, totally worth the money and time. The only recommendation is make your reservations in advance, they’re really full, and the estate isn’t near any major towns.

We’ve been to Taliesen West and loved it so we planned a stop in Spring Green on a trip to Chicago. It’s really not too far out of the way and a fabulous stop if you are a FLW fan! We toured Hillside and Taliesen with a great guide(Peggy). She gave a fasinating disscusion of FLW’s rather bizarre personal live and the history of the facilities. We highly recommend it!

My husband and I took the Highlights Tour. I read a couple of the books about FLW that came out within the least few years so I was really excited to see the grounds. The tour did not disappoint. We really got to see a fair amount of the property. Thankfully, there are a lot of preservation projects going on so you aren’t guaranteed to see any particular part. It was stunning to see just how poorly executed a lot of the work was at the home. As a fellow northerner I just couldn’t imagine plywood window frames and 2 inch cracks under the door. You have to take a step back and take it in as a whole to appreciate the design. The tour guide was knowledgeable and friendly. He pointed out a lot of details of the architecture that my untrained eye would not have noticed. The whole experience was fascinating. Strongly recommended for anyone interested in architecture or midwestern history.

Wright is nearly universally admired as the worlds greatest architect, but I suspect that a good portion of that is due to an «emperors new clothes» effect. Still, I have a decent amount of respect his work and have enjoyed visiting various structures designed by him. Taliesin, however, is a bit of a mess. I suppose this is because it was the place he and his students used to experiment with various styles — and perhaps because most of the structure started its life as working farm buildings. Also, to me, it appears that all the construction was done by his students, foregoing the quality provided by skilled craftsmen. I understand they need to raise money for conservation, but $ 50 /person for a 2 hour tour still seemed a bit high. Note that if you stand over 6 foot, prepare to be stooped over for half the tour — Wright hated tall people. If you are under 12, you aren’t allowed in. If you are over 80, beware that the footing of the paths and steps is very uneven.

I thoroughly enjoyed the tour of the grounds and architecture. The guide was knowledgeable, but a little reticent to talk about Mr. Wright’s personal life. Café food was not worth the money, but also the only game in town unless one stops in Spring Green itself. I had an eggplant caponata sandwich that was remarkably without flavor. My husband’s Sesame chicken salad was«good.» Great gift shop. A worker informed me that 100% of everything one sees in the shop is available on –line.

I hate to do this with all the other positive reviews, but we were disappointed with out recent visit. Admittedly, we stopped her to find some coupons for The House on the Rock. We did not find any. We were greeted by a front desk attendant that explained that there was a gift shop and a video on an old tune TV. We wanted to look around, but there was little to do beyond a video and a gift shop. The views from the café area were amazing, but the café was closed for the season. We went through the gift shop, and left. I would like to come back, take a tour or two, and check out the café. I am sure I will have a better experience during a different time of hear.

We were there just last weekend, one of the last perfect weekends in WI before it gets too rainy, cold, etc. We took the house tour(stay off the Chinese carpet!) and also the hillside tour(school). Very interesting stuff and it pays to watch PBS… I mean, so much is and has been out about FLW that the questions of the attendees… I digress. We had lunch in the Café which was tasty(clam chowder — very fresh and tender clams) and salads. There weren’t a ton of people eating(it was later, after the lunch rush) which was nice, but our server was very robotic. A little more customer interaction would have been great. My only beef about the place was that the furniture was filthy. I didn’t even want to touch it to pull my chair out. Please donate to the FLW foundation if only to get the café’s furniture cleaned. Bathroom situation — SPOTON. Bus driver — great and tour directors are really good, especially Margaret who added a ton of life to her talks. Can’t say if we’ll be back to tour, but it’s always cool to stop by his Unitarian church to see where his family and Mamah Borthwich are buried.

Café and shop that serves as the visitor center for Taliesin East. The food is good, but the experience of dining in a FLW designed restaurant with a view of the Wisconsin River is unmatched!

This is where you can purchase tickets to visit Frank Lloyd Wright’s Hillside School as well as his home, Taliesen. Tours sell out quickly and demand is especially high this summer, so be aware. The visitor center itself has knowledgeable people available to answer any questions that you may have. They also have quite the selection of pricey memorabilia. There were lamps that cost several hundred dollars that gave off a modicum of light. I think a table and chairs designed by Wright goes for just under $ 10000 all together; so yeah, pricey. I passed on the table, but I did buy a t-shirt for $ 22. The visitor center itself is worth seeing though because it too was designed by Wright — something most people don’t realize when they visit.
