Around Christmas of 2014, I stopped into this cute shop and purchased two awesome candles and a funny plaque. I wanted more candles in July of 2015. I went back and the place was closed, but a painter was inside. He said they were just closed for remodeling. I just called their phone number now(September 2015) and directory assistance offered to find me a similar shop since this number is no longer in service. It’s a shame, b/c those candles were really fragrant. I have a hard time finding candles I like. I believe it’s safe to say The Painted Pig is no more.

I’m not sure why this place is reported closed, but perhaps because it’s set back from the street, has no glaring signage, or markers on the sidewalk pointing to an open door, and the few windows that are facing the front are darkened, making it look deserted. In any case, it’s a fascinating store. The hardwood floors creak as you walk in and as you walk around. As your eyes adjust from the brightness outside to the darkened interior, you see first antique pottery and some dried flower and plant wall hangings, at first making you think you’re in some artists workshop. The checkout counter is directly in front, but hidden behind the wall of hanging home décor items. But if you keep walking, you’ll see a hodgepodge of antique furniture, tools, cabinetry, vases, dishes and some appropriate modern-day art and sign knockoffs written in old-time print. It’s nicely arranged and there’s plenty of room to wander, although there’s so much to see, unless you’re looking for something in particular, you probably won’t see it all in one visit. In another room they have candles(and not those ubiquitous yankee candles that show up everywhere) that fit in nicely with the dark wood and the nearby dining room set up. If you like antiquing, or just exploring in general as you make your way around Old Town Spring, the Painted Pig will burn time with all it has to offer.
