Please don’t waste your time buying a sub from anywhere else in the Springfield area. Head West makes the best. This small chain packs a big punch. You can put anything on their famous sweet bread and expect it to be delicious. And they don’t short you on meat or toppings. The prices are totally reasonable and you get plenty of sandwich for your dollar. Head West beats any sandwich chain I can think of.

I have never had anything there that wasn’t excellent. The tuna is generously piled on and not gooped down with a ton of mayo. The sweetbread is to die for!

Very good subs, great bread and choices. Love the Reuben. The only thing, when asked to toast the bread, they put the whole thing in the salamander, who wants the lettuce cooked? Otherwise much better than the other sub shops.

Great local chain sub shop. Their subs are comparable to Jimmy John’s but have a more local flare and feel.

I can’t give zero stars. Tried to go here based on reviews and at noon on a Saturday they were closed? No store hours posted and Unilocal said open. What a shame! Had to go to expensive microbrewery around the corner.

I have come to Springfield once or twice a year for a decade and only recently found Head West thanks to a cab driver. I am a vegan so finding(anything in Springfield) a good sub without just standard veggies piled on is hard. I was expecting that when I went here, but was thrilled to see veggie options such as ham and turkey. Now, I don’t crave meat looking items or names, but these offered some different taste and texture to a good sandwich. I imagine it is tough keeping vegan cheese and veganase in stock at any place in Springfield, but it would be great if they tried. Most meat eaters would have no clue if they tried it and I could have everything on a very good sandwich. If they would carry these two items I would give them a solid 5 stars. Regardless, I am going back every time I am in town.

Head West has been making my favorite sandwiches since high school. I crave the stuff when I’m out of town. Their sweet bread is fantastic, as Bethany has noted. My recommendation: #8(ham, turkey and provolone) on sweet bread, toasted. I’ve tried most of the subs on the menu, though, and never had a bad one. If you live in Springfield, like sandwiches, and haven’t been to Head West, then you must listen: Go. Go now.

I have not been to this location, but Head west is a local favorite for subs — made by hippies with the best sweet bread. They also serve Ben & Jerry’s ice cream by the pint. Not too far of a walk from downtown tourist attractions like Lincoln’s Home, Old State Capitol, and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum — plus it has a great view of the capitol!
