Walked in to find a completely remodeled restaurant in place of the old Crystal that was once in this location. The guy working the front was very friendly and greeted me as soon as I walked in. I decided to take my order to go because I had to get back to work — beware there is a small charge for to go orders. Very minimal so I was not worried. I ordered the phở without meatballs and he immediately offered to double the rare beef in place of it for no charge — so thoughtful! While I was waiting he immediately brought me a glass of water and a complimentary spring roll with sauce. This is their promotion for the first month. The spring roll itself was pretty tasty. The wrap was not too thick like most and the fillings were extremely fresh and flavorful. The sauce however was strange. It tasted more like a hoisin and the texture was closer

The Food. Damn good. Ok, ok, you want some actual descriptions. The Mango Salad: I never thought in my life that I would be raving about a salad and definitely not a mango salad. This mango salad however is bright both visually and as the flavors play off each other in a harmonious melody on your tongue. The mango is sweet but still has a bit of that not-quite-yet-ripe crunch. It has just the right amount of chili peppers added in and the lime juice makes the whole thing pop. I’ve also had the short ribs and the sizzling beef both of which are wonderfully tender and flavorful. Even the side soup is simple but delicious. Only thing I didn’t care for was the fried rice but I’m not usually a fan of restaurant fried rice anyway so I’m not sure why I even ordered it.

I had the egg rolls and lemongrass beef with vermicelli. Both were really good and a nice change from the other Vietnamese restaurants in the area. It was great quality for the price! The staff was friendly and attentive. Definitely give this place a try!

A really nice surprise. I’ve made three visits and look forward to working my way through the menu. I’ve had the pork sandwich– delicious with a firey pepper that really made it pop. The two shops I have tasted were quite good and we loved the spring rolls. I don’t understand why the place doesn’t have a crowd at lunch. Its a deal.

We just tried this restaurant. We enjoyed Krystal Bar when it was open, but I think this is much better. The menu is not huge, but there is not need for quantity if what you have is excellent quality. The descriptions of the items were very clear and accurate. We loved the shaken beef, spring rolls, egg rolls and house sandwich. Every thing was very fresh and tasty. For less than what you would spend at McDonalds, you can have a great meal, and good service. We will be back!

I love this place !! Yep everything(except the special weekend menu) is 5.99 or less. They have the best egg rolls that come with a side of some spicy sauce and lettuce and mint. I am not a huge fan of Vietnamese food(I don’t like lemon grass) but I have had on multiple occasions the shaking beef and korean short ribs. The shaking beef comes with sauteed onions/garlic rice and lettuce and tomato. Actually lettuce and tomato come with about everything. The beef is very good and always cooked perfectly to order. The Korean Short Ribs are fantastic however if you are a big eater you might need 2 orders. The service is really good and they are always willing to explain whatever to you. For 5.99 it is a great deal.

A coworker suggested I try this place because she knows how I like ma&pa gems in so city. My boyfriend and I shared two apps and two entrees. Food was great, service was friendly, and place was cute and clean. They have a limited menu but do have a few specials to offer. My meal came with fried rice and as much as I tried to eat ½, I couldn’t control my self… ate. the. whole. freaked. portion, yummy!!! I can’t wait to go back and try other dishes. Best part is the price, 5.99 for good food and nice portions. The mango salad was enough for two, maybe three and deliciously spicy! Must try!

My husband went with friends last weekend and really enjoyed our meal and experience. It’s fairly small with not a lot of frills, but very comfortable, even homey. The food was excellent! We started with spring rolls and our friends also got egg rolls. The spring rolls were very large and incredibly fresh and they were served with a very authentic peanut sauce. Our friends also enjoyed their egg rolls. I ordered the Hue style spicey soup. The broth was very flavorful with slices of beef, veggies and noodles. It actually wasn’t very spicey, but I like things pretty spicey so I just added some of the hot chili sauce that was on the table and it was great. Everyone at the table loved their meal and we all intend to go back. The owners are very friendly… a young couple with great ideas. I hope the community supports them. All the entrees on the menu are $ 5.99, thus the name. The servings are plenty of food particularly for that price. I strongly recommend it!

My husband and I ate here last Friday(2÷7÷14) arrived around 6pm. We didn’t know whether to seat ourselves or wait to be seated. In all fairness, the woman working there was on the phone taking an order. We sat ourselves at the only cleared off table. At least 4 other tables were full of dirty dishes. Our table was wiped down after we were given menus. We were served water fairly quickly and placed our order at the same time. The spring rolls came out within 5 minutes. The«peanut dipping sauce» was anything but a sauce. It was a thick paste, maybe hoisin? But much thicker than a typical hoisin sauce. Nothing resembling peanut sauce. The rolls were filled with noodles, a couple shrimp, and a couple herbs. I wish there was more mint/cilantro in the rolls. Our entrées took another 30 minutes to be served. We were told that the noodles were not cooked yet(don’t noodles take 5 – 10 minutes to cook?) and there was a delay. The«house-seasoned rice» with the shaking beef was very greasy. The portion size was fine, but not anything different from what I could make at home. Just meat with onions. I left most of the onions and rice on the plate since they were lacking in flavor and covered in oil. The Hue style spicy soup my husband ordered was much better. It was served with cabbage and basil to be added to the soup as needed. Overall, not impressed with the service and the food. We spent under $ 20 but we spent over an hour there mainly waiting for service and our food. Not planning on going back.

We stopped in for lunch today. What I really liked was that everything was made fresh to order. The egg rolls we delicious, not oily at all with a wonderful earthy hint of shitaki mushrooms mixed in. I had the shaved beef with noodles, thai basil, mint, mixed veggies and peanuts. It was a huge bowl for $ 5.99. My guest had the beef soup with noodles, shaved beef, a mild sausage sliced thinly. The broth was excellent. The service was great, very friendly and explained anything we had questions about. Overall a wonderful experience. I was sad to see Crystal restaurant go but this replacement more than makes up for it. I can’t wait until they start delivery. 4 big thumbs up from me.

this place is a hit or a miss. love the workers and the price. however the food is ok. been here several times. sometimes the rice is too dry, noodle soup flavor is off, fried rice was sooo burned, chicken so tiny! but I’ll still go back because nothing beats customer service. and the price haha. it’s not so bad for Authentic Vietnamese food, it’s ok.

I went to this restaurant earlier today for lunch just to finally check it out. I knew going in there that $ 5.99 an entrée not to expect to much. I was wrong. Yes the decore is very basic. But thats not a big deal to me. The place was spotlessly clean and had real silverware and dishes not paper and plastic throw aways. Service was good(60% tip good). I had spring rolls and the special house noodle dish w/hot tea to drink. First the spring rolls were average everything was fresh I would have preferred a little more cilantro and some saracha or garlic chili sauce but the hoisin helped. The House special noodle dish consisted of chicken, shrimp, crab, quail egg and a soup on the side. The chicken was small but good, really good the qual egg was delicious. The shrimp and crab were alright over all I really like it. For $ 5.99 it was better than expected. I dont know if its a misspelling or just the font they use on the menu but when crab appears on the menu it looks like it reads crap. Which I assure you it isnt.

So I’ve been here a few times and I’ve not been disappointed. When they opened there were only a six items, but the seem to be slowly adding dishes. Looks like the menu is up to 19 dishes with another marked as coming soon. Phở is good, and I was so excited to see banh mi on the menu. Not a complicated dish, but for some reason hard to find in St. Louis. And you can’t argue with the price: $ 5.99 or less. People are very nice and helpful, too. I have some severe food allergies, so an Asian restaurant with friendly staff who speak fluent English is priceless. In short, definitely worth a try. Good food, good people and not too pricy. I’m a fan of the phở and the fried rice(way better than the Chinese fried rice in this neighborhood).

I am from Los Angeles and we have a lot of good Vietnamese food here but to find a place here is very rare. The place has good décor making me feel nostalgic and they play Vietnamese music; good touch. The menu includes phở(Vietnamese beef soup noodle), com bo luc lac(shaking beef), beef stew, fried rice, fried egg noodles, and most importantly Vietnamese ice coffee. The coffee is very good.

I recently noticed a sign adverting a grand opening for a place called the $ 5.99 Restaurant Got Rice? located on South Kingshighway. This past Sunday I had planned on meeting a friend for lunch and we decided to give the new restaurant a try. When I arrived and was told by my friend that this location used to be a Chinese restaurant called Krystal, and that previously the inside was nothing impressive however the new owners must had recently remodeled. While the inside wasn’t anything fancy it was apparently much nicer than the old. We were greeted by a very friendly employee who told us to sit where ever we would like. Once seated she handed us a menu and took our drink order. The offer a house tea, for 50cents not sure if that was by the glass of with free refills however it was very good. I can only assume that drinks were by the glass since they were also serving sodas by the can. The menu was a single sheet of paper with 6 entrees, this was not what I was expecting. I almost considered leaving at this point but I figured I would give them a chance. I ordered the Crispy Chicken with rice while my friend had ordered the Fried Rice. The food arrived quickly, but not before the waitress could bring out our soup and free Spring Rolls, served with shrimp. The menu did not mention the addition of shrimp to the Spring Rolls, this was a letdown for my friend who does not eat any type of seafood. Once our entrees arrived I tried to take a bite of my crispy chicken only to discover that there was hardly any meat on this fried chicken. It was served with side of sauce however I really think that the piece of chicken had less meat on it than a single Chicken McNugget from McDonalds. I tried the rice and it was actually very good, perhaps some of the better rice I have had. The Fried Rice arrived only for my friend to discover it was served with shrimp, which was not mentioned on the menu. Overall we were very disappointed with the options and lack of information on the menu, overall for a place called the $ 5.99 Restaurant Got Rice I actually expected a little bit more than six options, especially if you are reopening in a place that was a Chinese Restaurant that served a diverse menu less than just 2 months ago. I hope that the menu was limited due to their grand opening, and that they will expand shortly however I do not see myself returning.
