I went here since I read it was St. Louis’ oldest bakery. I bought a gooey butter cake to bring to a friend’s house in Chicago and helped myself to a donut on the way out. All for around 10 bucks! Both tasted incredible. I’ll be back here again.

Did you know that Carondelet is the oldest bakery in St. Louis? Did you also know that one of the type of ovens they use has enough bricks to build a three story home, and they have three of them? Ooooorrrr did you know CB makes a mean gooey butter cake, along with a huge variety of pastries, cookies, brownies and cakes? Well, now you do. This place is adorable and the owners couldn’t be nicer. The fudge brownies are literally some of the best I’ve ever had, and you’ll find all of your traditional favorites here. What I love most about CB is that you get a little piece of history every time you walk inside, along with some of the best treats in the city. How do you beat that? Stop by anytime the craving hits, or even if you need a hostess gift or want to surprise a friend with something special. Huge fan of this St. Louis gem!

I walked in this place with my little girl after breakfast at Riverside. It is such a throwback to maybe the 60’s or even the 50’s. The elephant ears looked incredible, as did the gooey butter cake. If you need a nostalgia fix, want to see what bakeries were like when your mom was young or perhaps just want some baked goods, please stop by. It’s pretty close to the River City casino. Since we just had breakfast, we only got a chocolate donut for the road. It was fine.

Its always a real treat to visit this bakery. The elephant ears are perfect, and the ladies who work there are really nice. Try the coconut-cream filled thingy with powdered suger on top. Can’t wait to order a carrot cake for my birthday!

A very good bakery. We’ve gone here for everything from wedding cakes to special holiday goods(love their cake eggs around Easter) to bread and pastries for parties(try their gooey butter cake and strawberry whipped cream rolls) to a small treat.

Carondelet Bakery has delicious offerings, and it’s such a great location. I tried the sugar cookies and the peanut butter cookies. The PB cookies were crunchy and chewy at the same time, just as they should be. The sugar cookies are so close to the ones my grandma used to make. Since she’s departed(Yo, Grandma! Yours were THE best, I swear!), I’ll satisfy my craving for some at Carondelet.

This is easily one of the best bakeries in St. Louis. It touts itself as the oldest bakery in St. Louis… though I am not sure how true this is, I would believe word of it since the place has been there forever, been owned by the same family, and makes baked goods so old fashioned you can’t find them anywhere else in the city. The highlight of this place as far as I am concerned has to be the grape cake. I know this sounds bizarre, but imagine the best grape preserves in the world, and them combine them with all the yumminess of a gooey butter/crumb cake. It’s devine. The only real complaint I can even muster about this delectable little desert is the fact that they don’t deseed the concord grapes. Just be careful, they can be chewed, but it’s more likely that you will be spitting them out as you munch down. My other favorite at this place are the oatmeal cookies. Oh my, they are amazing. They are soft and filled with just enough cinnamon. I could easily down a dozen of these things in one sitting, feel sick, but still want to consume more. Everything here is fresh and will simply kick the butt of any grocery(and most bakery) goods of the same variety. I realize there’s not a lot of destinations in this neighborhood to head to, but I highly suggest checking this one out if you are looking for some authentic, old timey type baked goods. YUM-O.

Known for their gooey butter cake and for being St. Louis’ oldest bakery, this 125-year-old shop stands in Carondelet’s Ivory Triangle, where farmers once shopped before heading back out to St. Louis County. The owners live upstairs, and wake up at 4AM to begin the process of filling the cases with goodies such as almond crunch stollens, cream puffs, bread, chocolate-chip cookies and brownies. Everything in the shop is made from scratch with fresh ingredients and no preservatives. This is definitely an old-timers bakery and worth a stop off to pick up a treat on the way to Grandmas.
