Ishmael is the best server here! Celebrating a birthday and we felt very At home! The cheese dip here is amazing! Salsa just as good ! The fajita mixed with everything was delicious and came out sizzling! Our severe served us patron shots for the birthday boy! Everything was wonderful I would come back to this location any time! Food and service wonderful

I love this place! I ordered the Pollo Michoacan and it was delicious. The service was quick. I will definitely be returning.

My boyfriend and I love this place. They got our complicated orders 100% correct, everyone was super polite, AND they had the Blues game on!

Nothing fancy Mexican food. Most of my lunch was extremely dry and I think it was left over and not at all fresh. I love the one on The Rock Road however this one was much similar to a fast food. Chips were over cooked. Waitress was very nice but seemed surprised when I actually told her the food wasn’t great

This was my second visit, I was really expecting the same wonderful service and food & drink like my last visit 2 weeks ago, I was amazed that it was even possible to beat that, Chris(server) remembered us and my dry humor. lol The food was plenty and the drinks(adult pitcher drinks) was great! Food was fresh made to order and everyone was very friendly and happy! This is our new place to dine!

It’s gotten better. Food was really good and service was improved from last trip. If they keep improving service I’ll write a new review.

I had no idea there was another El Maguey location in South City– this location is much larger and cleaner compared to the Watson location. The décor is much more colorful– lots to look at. I went on a weekday evening and the place was dead. Only one other table was occupied while I was there. So, no waiting! Can’t wait to come back in the summer to sit on the patio(something the Watson location can’t offer). The menu is different here than what I remember. I didn’t see my «go-to» dish on the menu and the waitress was still able to get me what I wanted without second thought. The food was served very quickly and was very hot. Great service and the food was as expected. The only thing that would make this better would be if the food was better– but what do you expect for less than $ 10/person?

Nice low key. In desperate need so help, some to fill water and chips. Food is good, no complaints. The service they had was great but over worked. If they are busy if stay away for now. They are still new. Expect Telmex style not authentic

Expensive for what you get. Pretty much standard El Maguey fare. I, often, judge the Mexican by the chip and salsa routine. In this case, I would give this restaurant a D-. The salsa was decent enough but all I got was a couple of tablespoons in a small container AND, then, if I wanted more, I would have to flag down a food server who would fill with a pitcher of salsa. How long does, literally, two tablespoons last? The food server chose to ignore the empty salsa at least twice. Most places give you a small extra container of salsa and/or you get more to begin with. Not a good idea. Is this a cost saving issue? That, in and of itself is enough to convince me not to go back. Please… serve your salsa in bowls with the usual small glass vial so you can refill yourself!!!

Not my favorite Mexican restaurant near my house but a tasty alternative. Margarita was strong. I enjoyed the quesadilla Jalisco, shrimp quesadilla smothered in queso. Shrimp was cooked perfectly. Guacamole was good with a little kick. Fried rice was good too. They give you a ton of queso so I finished it with chips after my food was gone. My guy had the sampler platter with chile relleno and chicken chimichanga. Chile relleno was delicious. Chicken chimichanga was okay, but the smother of queso was wonderful.

I’ve been to this place twice now. The first time my server decided to keep part of my change(the coin part, which was close to a dollar) without asking me first. Strike one. The second time I went, they pressured me to order because they were closing soon(it was still an hour till their posted closing time). My friend was meeting me and running late. They closed the place 35 minutes early, preventing my friend and I from meeting up. Strike two. I also am fairly certain I have food poisoning from my taco salad, which tasted sort of off. Strike three. Other observations: –The service is not great. It feels like the place is run by teenagers, but not particularly responsible ones. –The food is «meh» at best. It’s pretty expensive for the quality and quantity. –The margaritas are of variable quality, depending on who happens to pour the pre-mix into your glass. I do not recommend. At all. Drive to U-City to Mi Ranchito if you want good, standard tex-mex for a better price, or go to Mission Taco for roughly the same price for much, much better food.

Got a to-go at 11:15am. Paid over $ 18.00 for 3 beef hard tacos, pico de gallo, & white queso. $ 4.00 of which the tiny cup of cheese dip cost. When I arrived home, the cheese dip was all over the bottom of the plastic bag. Pretty(VERY) irritated because when I called back the only worker(Annie) told me she cannot send a gift certificate, instead I must drive 30+ minutes back to her location to get my money back that was wasted or my other option was that she’d remember me next time, when ever that may be(without asking my name, number, or address). No manager was available OR even present in this new location at the time either. I’m thinking… Wtf?! Pissed. I wanted my cheese.

I’ve been to this restaurant before just not this exact location, and I wish I wouldn’t have. My server was nice(for the most part) but I did not care for my food and when I tried to get something different they told me I couldn’t replace what I ordered to get something else. I asked for the manager and she couldn’t tell me when he’ll be in. Awhile after, he comes in and he attempts to argue and get smart with me and not providing good customer at all. I will never go here again. If you choose to dine here I hope you like what you order or else you still will pay for it even if you just tried it!

Feeling 3.5 stars really. It’s not exceptional, but it’s not bad either. I thought food was too expensive for its quantity and quality. Service was quite good however. As another reviewer noted, décor is somewhat bizarre and extremely 3D and colorful. I don’t have experience with acid trips, even though a previous reviewer mentioned don’t do acid and go to the restaurant, I think those that do enjoy lsd might decide for themselves whether or not to trip. I could imagine that it could be an interesting time.

Do not drop acid and then go to eat at this restaurant. I repeat… DONOTDROPACIDANDTHENGOTOEATATTHISRESTAURANT! You will freak out! Between the neon colored chairs and tables with 3-D sunshines with faces, each one brighter than the next, and the crazy murals(like the life size Native American that looks like it was painted by a 7-year old), it will not go well. That little bit of info was free. You’re welcome. I don’t know what’s going on with this location but it is NOT the El Maguey I’m used to on Chippewa. There’s no way this can be the same owners. First off — the prices are out of this world. $ 9.50 for a combo platter? My El Maguey would never! Also, the food was not the same. I ordered my favorite bean and cheese nachos and they came out with melted cheese on top, not queso dip. Aweful! No spicy bite to them at all. I was excited to have a newer, cleaner El Maguey in my neighborhood, but never again. I’m going back to the original Chippewa location.

Meh. I don’t usually go to El Maguey for fine dining, but the food was almost cold in the middle and the drinks(which normally ARE why I go) were even weaker than usual. I doubt I will be going back to this specific location anytime soon.

I really like the service here, but their food is… like every other El Maguey. Not really much to say. It’s usually empty, which is probably why El Toro closed, leaving room for El Maguey to move in. You’re really better off going to Lily’s down the street or Chimichangas on South Grand, just a few minutes away. Pros: service Neutral: décor(toned down slightly from El Toro, not sure if that’s good), food Cons: I just want it to be better.

Formerly El Toro, I decided to try this place based on liking the El Maguey on Chippewa. Food was extremely overpriced, the salsa was bland to the point that we had to dump Valentina in it, just to add some flavor. I had a cheese quesadilla that was minute and barely had any cheese! They do not have a happy hour on anything other than margaritas, which was exactly the same routine as El Toro, which was extremely disappointing. Place was empty and Judge Judy was blaring no music or ambiance at all. One of the staff members left, walked down to Little Caesars and came back with a pizza — I think that says it all.
