Mushmaus is studio space for small independent artists and provides a venue for musical performances and other events located in the Cherokee neighborhood. Last night I attended a concert called Consonant Drift, which featured various solo performances of experimental ambient music. Most of the music was at least partially synthesized with, for example, an electric guitar looped into a synthesizer with psychedelic video projected as a backdrop. Besides the concert, the upstairs studio had a few art projects strewn about: a lengthy roll of paper, a map with cassette boxes dangling from it, etc. The aesthetic of the building is very DIY; for example, the front door has cracked glass, and this might be an intentional part of the style, or it may be because the whole building is a rehab in progress, complete with the smell of fresh paint. Cherokee is definitely a neighborhood in progress, currently offering a mix of Mexican businesses and bohemian/artsy spots and a few antique shops east of Jefferson Avenue.
