I wish St. Louis had more places like White Flag, and less galleries of pretentious water-color landscape bull-sh*t like we do. White Flag does a lot of fun art shows as well as events. Point in case, Simon and I recently attended a portion of their 24 hour David Lynch marathon extravaganza where they featured the entire collection of Twin Peaks playing back to back. Starting at 9pm on Saturday and going until 9pm on Sunday, this event was BYOB and BYOFood. Everyone brought sleeping bags, chairs, pillows, etc, and had a good olé fashioned sleep over. Now we didn’t stay all night because I had to work in the morning, but we pop in long enough to feel like we were in on the inside-joke style quirkiness of David Lynch’s Twin Peaks saga. I am definitely going to keep tabs on future White Flag fun.

I’ve heard many a story about White Flag Projects, but never knew exactly where it was or what happened there. Well, now I know! If you aren’t familiar with this gallery, it’s located near the intersection of Kingshighway and Manchester, right next to the oil change place on the corner. From the front of the building, you’d never know that this was a cool little event space. Guess they like to fly under the radar… The art exhibit that I was there to see wasn’t all that impressive(a lot of ink blots and penis cut-outs, not really for me) but the space itself is pretty darn cool. Garage doors partition the exhibit areas off and can be adjusted according to whatever the artist would need. And I especially like the comfy loft area near the entrance. Patrons can watch what’s going on below and feel omnipresent. Woooo… fancy! I would be excited to come back for a different exhibit or attend an event here. The space is raw enough for just about anything, but still has a finished feel to it. So you’re not worried about an exit strategy in case the place caught on fire. And some might complain about the neighborhood being a tad sketchy, but it doesn’t bother me in the slightest. Then again, you’re talking to a girl that lives on Cherokee Street :)

White Flag is one of my favorite local galleries. It’s spacious, and there’s a little library area up the spiral staircase where you can look at art books. The walls are white and the ceilings are tall. Oh, and often at openings, the beer is flowing freely(and I mean usually free). Of course, I don’t always love the exhibits, but I often do, and it’s a fun place to hang out, regardless of the art. Sometimes bands play shows, most notably, The Evens, which is a duo with one half being Ian MacKaye of Fugazi fame. Yup, this might be the hippest gallery in town, and the most fun.
