The food was excellent, the service was average, but the med’s bathroom was filthy. Trash was strewn out the door. Management has to do better than this.

Um, I’ve only been to CB once and my first impression was .awesome. My second time around, and I was not disappointed. Maybe it’s the west coast in me, but I find this place much better than an equivalent of Denny’s, IHOP or Roscoe’s. My breakfast of country fried chicken, fried hashbrowns and hot, fluffy biscuits hit home. The chicken was covered to a crisp, the white meat still juicy and delicious, and all covered in gravy. The hashbrowns were like … everything you’ve wanted between a fry and a potato skin. The biscuits? omg. All you need is honey. His dish of chicken fried steak, grits, green beans and mashed potatoes overflowing with gravy was a sight to behold. It was another sight to see it all finished. Why can’t they have one in California?

I ordered the roast beef dinner with sides of corn, macaroni & cheese, and grits. Server looked confused for a moment and wasn’t sure if I could do grits, but went ahead and wrote it down.(Hey, y’all serve breakfast all days, shouldn’t be a problem!) Food was brought quickly. When I went to remove the utensils from the napkin, the knife had particles of food on it and some kind of film on all three pieces. I made the server aware of it, and she quickly removed the pieces from the table. .. and then instead of promptly being me fresh utensils took longer than she should to bring me shiny clean ones, and offered no apology for the inconvenience. Food was ok. Roast beef was certainly tender, the sides were average at best.

I’d heard a rumor that Cracker Barrel’s in the South were better than the North and I think I have to agree. Granted, I do like the one I’ve been to up North, but I felt that everything was made with a little more care and a lot more love. The biscuits were amazing, and the white gravy was heavy without leaving a ball in my stomach. The prices were just right as well. Funny enough, I think our waitress was from Boston. Oh and to add to the Southern appeal? Totally saw a girl my age in full overalls, plaid shirt, camo hat and boots. Yes indeed I am in the South.

I have always been a fan of Cracker Barrel, having gone to three other restaurants before the Staunton one. It proved to be just as good, the wait staff was friendly and attentive, and the food was brought out quickly and accurately. The staff even brought us out free sides and other things because they knew we were stopping in on our way to work with Habitat for Humanity! If you are not familiar with Crack Barrels, they feature a ‘general store’ in the front and often furniture outside. I don’t know why I would be back in this area, but if I was I would definitely stop back in.

Sometimes I’m in San Francisco and I dream of good ol’ country home cooking with greens, catfish, mac n’ cheese, corn, coleslaw, corn bread, biscuits all washed down with a cool glass of sweet tea. Then I wake up and I realize several things. One I’m not living in VA anymore and it’s harder to get that kind of food round SF. Two even if I go home I won’t get that kind of food, cause my Chinese Daddy is not making biscuits. So what’s a girl gotta do to fill her cravings? Well obviously make a beeline for the nearest Cracker Barrel. Their food is so down home and comforting. If I wasn’t Chinese and had a grandma I’d want her to cook like this. Never fails to hit the spot. Plus after wards a game of checkers on the front porch while sitting on the rocking chairs is about the most relaxing thing in the world. Or if you feel like getting rowdy you can go next door to the Texas Saloon & Steakhouse for a beer.
