It was an average hibachi. The food was decent as it normally is at any Japanese steak house and there wasn’t anything above and beyond. What I thought was strange was the ambiance. It had a beautiful, lounge like interior with black and gray everywhere. The walls were a soft gray brick with interesting art. The music was house and top 40(loud) and they had disco balls. They were catering their décor and ambiance to a young, hip crowd that would’ve been the perfect setting in the city. Except this is stoneham and everyone brought their kids. So it wasn’t a lounge even though they wanted it to be one. The chef who prepares our food was in a rush. His shift must have been over immediately after our dinner. Our onion volcano was just a huge ball of fire, he missed the egg twice and just sprayed lots and lots of sake for everyone. He also forgot someone’s order at our table. I just felt like he didn’t want to be there. As for the beginning of the meal, you need to ask for miso soup instead of mushroom. The fried rice barely had flavor and our drinks were watered down and now particularly delicious. It was okay. Nothing special. I don’t think we’ll be back personally, but if you’re looking for a hibachi its average so I wouldn’t NOT recommend it. I’m just not coming back myself.

Plain and simple. This is by far the best Chinese food buffet around. Forget about Cambridge, forget about Saugus, forget about the other big one by the head of the lake in Wakefield/Reading. Do not let the shopping center location deter you. Every appetizer is always cooked to perfection. The rice and noodle dishes are steps above others. They don’t really advertise the fact, but included in the buffet price, is also the option to choose a selection of meats, to have them grill on the hibachi, place to your own personal taste. Service is fast and efficient. But don’t expect to shoot the breeze with your server, because these people work, more than they talk. If everything in our country ran this efficiently, we would not be in the mess we are in today. P. S. It’s the chicken wings, which draw me like a magnet. Always fresh, crisp and golden. Some might think a chicken wing is a chicken wing is a chicken wing. NOT! Tulips wings soar.

Service was terrible — unless your a regular and male you will get over looked and treated poorly. Went with a friend for the first time last night. I have heard lots of good things about this place and wanted to give it a try. We decided to stay at the bar because the restaurant got real busy fast and we had seats already up at the bar. I arrived before my friend and sat for over 10 minutes before anyone behind the bar stopped to ask if I wanted a drink. I ordered a Mai-Tai and watched the bartender turn around and grab a pre-made drink from a line-up of watered down Mai-Tais. Not impressed. There where two women bartenders and one guy who basically delivered the food orders. The two girls chatted up the regular male customers and served them before any other customers. At one point, I just wanted another glass of water… the purple haired bartender stopped finally after I had been saying excuse me and barked«what, I’m not moving fast enough for you?» Really… We ordered standard Chinese food apps and they were alright the fried rice was nothing to write home about. At the end of the day, I won’t be back. The service was that horrible. Overall, the owners need to take a serious look at who they have behind the bar and rethink things. I will tell anyone listening about the poor service and lack of customer respect this place served up. I’m big on tipping 20% and over to servers usually cause I know how hard the job can be and they work for tips… in this case, our bill of close to $ 85.00 got both servers a $ 5.00 tip! Oh and one more thing… the regulars use the emergency exit right next to the bar for their smoking section. Every time the door opens a gust of cold smoky air poured in leading us to have to put our coats back on. Make sure you read all the reviews about this place before you venture out! Right down the street is a great place in Reading called Oye — go there they are really customer oriented and food is great!

This was my first visit to Tulip. It was highly recommended by a good friend that usually enjoys their take-out, but suggested we try the Hibachi. The restaurant was clean but dark. The lighting was so dim it was difficult to read the menu. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. The cocktails are very strong! Definitely NOT complaining :-) We had sushi as a starter. Tasty and the shrimp was fresh, however the rolls fell apart once dipped in soy sauce. The Hibachi chef was beyond entertaining! He was hilarious. I think he enjoyed squeezing Saki from the condiment bottle into the customer’s mouth more than cooking :-) Again, alcohol=no complaints! The stirfry was well seasoned and cooked properly. The shrimp was moist and not overcooked and gummy. The fried rice was a little dry but the ginger duck sauce saved it. The salmon needed to be seasoned, however it was cooked perfectly. The portions are big; it’s a lot of food to eat in one sitting. The prices are good… Especially on the cocktail menu! I will definitely have dinner at Tulip again.

The lunch buffet here is really good. They have tons of things to choose from. The atmosphere is cool too. They also offer hibachi which I have never tried. The staff is can be rude though.

I love this place. It is definitely my favorite for hibachi. The drinks are strong and the food is delicious. I always get a sushi app(usually a volcano) to start and it is always good. I always get the noodles with hibachi and they are so good, way better then rice. The music is always good and the vibe is so fun in the hibachi rooms. We have come here for a few celebrations and always had an awesome time. The service is always a little slow(mainly for drinks), so definitely carve out a little time if you plan on going here.

This is the first review I have ever written and intend to write. Let me start off by saying that I’ve worked in the restaurant industry as a server for many years. I appreciate how hardworking servers are and understand that some people servers have to deal with are intolerable. We have been coming to Tulip for a long time and have always had great experiences there. The chefs are great and entertaining. The servers have always been friendly and deserving of 20% tips(which we tip everywhere we go). Tonight we had a horrible experience with our server. She must have been new because she didn’t know what the«surf and turf» was. It was clearly stated on the menu as one of the options for hibachi. We were understanding at first since we thought she was new and still learning. We were understanding until she forgot our waters, our appetizer, and continued by screwing up the sushi we ordered. When we explained that this was not what we ordered she argued with us and didn’t offer to change it. She continued to be rude at every encounter we had with her which may have been twice or at most three times in almost two/2.5 hours. When the bill came we decided to give her 15% rather than 20% since we had such poor service. She then decided to come back and challenge our decision and asked for more money for her tip, claiming she deserved 20%. She slapped the menu closed in our faces when we showed her what we actually ordered after we had nicely explained what went wrong(which we did previously). We were regular customers at Tulip and are very disappointed in this service.

Excellent food. Quick service. I’ve seen some comments on here referring to the staff as rude but I didn’t find this at all. We had hibachi and our chef was terrific. He did all the typical«gimmicks» you see at any hibachi place but he did them very well. The onion volcano was huge! Price was par for the course with it costing ~25 bucks per person for food then drinks on top of that. Not a once a week thing but fun for a night out. The restaurant itself was very clean and the house lighting looked fancy but maybe a touch too dark. I’d say they could do without such loud music in the bathroom but that’s a small gripe for what was overall a very positive experience. I had a really good time and will be returning.

Good food and a fun time but very RUDE wait staff. Asked for drink order repeatedly. Our chef was very entertaining and the food was good but the waitress had the nerve to say we didn’t tip enough and came back looking for more!

I think they have great food but the service is very bad. I went twice and the bar tender was very rude if your not a regular then you did not matter. When I went the second time I has hibachi and when you asked for anything it wa like you were bothering them. The last straw was when my niece went in for lunch with her friends and they all had money and people were so rude to them. If you like really bad service you should go here.

I went here for a celebration for my friend once and i’m never going here ever again. There’s an open grill where you eat your food which is an EXTREME safety hazard to most people, mainly kids. They made an onion volcano, which was cool, but still a huge chance for a kid to burn himself. They tossed mini broccoli into people’s mouths, which was deadly because somebody could’ve easily choked on it. I ordered the steak and chicken and I got… I don’t even know what exactly I got. Bottom line, it tasted terrible. in fact, it was so bad I had to lie and say that I needed something to take home my «food». Never coming back here ever again.

With 3 friends, I went to Tulips to celebrate something quite special. It’s known around town that the food is mediocre at best but we needed the location and convenience more than a gourmet meal. All of us agreed that we had the worst service ever. We noted this on our bill and left a 15% tip-which we consider to be a bad tip. The waitress never once cleared our table. Never once. We accidentally spilled one drink and we had to go to different tables to get napkins to clean it up. The mound of dirty napkins stayed, along with every dirty dish from appetizers through dinner on the table as we were walking out the door, We will never go back,

This was my second visit to Tulip and I’m still not really impressed. I like the dimly lit atmosphere with its neon light accents scattered about. It has a sort of nightclub feel to it. There is a large bar as you enter the restaurant that is separated from the dining area by a wall. I’m assuming this is a great hangout for Stoneham locals and those not so local too. On my first visit to Tulip I was with a large group. They pushed a couple tables together and accommodated us nicely. We had ordered a couple Pu Pu Platters and apps — decent Chinese that hit the spot. After dinner we gathered in the bar for a couple drinks. Not a bad night out, but nothing special either. Tonight was a little different. I met a friend for dinner and they seated us in the regular dining area. The other options would have been the bar or the Hibachi tables. Our server took a very long time to come over. We were not even offered water as we waited. The server finally arrived and did not apologize for the delay. At that point we were ready to place our whole order — drinks, apps, and main course. Our drinks came quickly, but then so did the food– a little too quickly. The main course arrived first with the apps soon after. Yes, I said that correctly — main course BEFORE the apps! We really missed having the time to enjoy the appetizers and it was just food overload. As we ate the server never returned to check on us. She came by as we were finishing and started grabbing plates and left the check on the table. I had to ask her to put a plate back down that I wasn’t finished with. My friend wanted to order another drink and dessert. The server looked slightly annoyed that she had to take the check away to adjust it and bring us more food. We just felt so rushed. Tonight I tried the sushi and it was decent. I suppose Tulip is worthy of three stars based on their food. It’s not good enough, however, to make me want to come back again especially after the awful service we experienced tonight.

One of the better Asian restaurants in Stoneham. I definitely prefer Sato right next door, but Tulip has the advantage of space, so it’s much better for a group. As for the buffet, I think Mandarin in Reading is much better. The sushi at Tulip is pretty good, and I like that you can get brown rice. I’ll definitely go back, but mostly because it’s close!

It’s good for a group. We came for Mother’s Day with about 14 adults/kids and ate at the Japanese cook at your table section. We eat frequently at Bisuteki in Revere so we knew what to expect. With the teppanyaki meals you get salad, rice, 2 shrimp appetizers, meat or seafood depending what you choose, and vegetables. The meat was extremely bland, you couldn’t taste any teriyaki at all, it literally tasted like they put the meat directly on grill without even salt. The portions of meat were decent, vegetables were good, they didn’t give bean sprout like all the other places I’ve been too, I was missing that. They also don’t include green tea ice cream, or Sherbet which other places I have gone usually include. One adult in out party got the vegetarian meal. I don’t know if the cook screwed up or what but her portion of vegetables was the exact small portion everyone else got with their meat. You would think where the vegetables are the meal she would at least get double. The cook was entertaining and the kids liked it.
