The water seems to be the star of the show here. With 11 different lakes, there were lots of people out fishing, kayaking and canoeing on a Saturday morning in August. I came down for a random run and found it to be A-OK but not great. I had read on the City of Suffolk’s website that there was a 4 mile bridle trail. There was no map to go off of so I parked by a boat launch and just winged it. Once I found the bridle trail at the far North End, it only amounted to about 2 miles, but was nicely shaded and fairly well maintained. No mile marker signage, but there are arrows to help direct you on the correct path. Since I wanted to get in some more mileage I ventured a different way than a sign directed me and ended up on a farm. The road that goes through the park from the South End to the North End is at least 3 miles one way and is all gravel, so it too is a nice way to get in some running or walking on a soft surface. The only issue is that it gets dusty and difficult to breathe when cars pass by you. Can’t complain too much since it’s a free park and the main attraction is the water, but Suffolk could do a much better job with making maps available and providing clearer info on the trails online.

I decided to update my review for Lone Star Lakes Park(LSLP) because I’ve been coming here more often – needing a run around the loop, taking photographs(you can see I’m a bit addicted), or looking for privacy. Solitude is the big reason why I decided to change my 4-stars to 5. LSLP is not flashy compared to some parks; the playground is boring, no restrooms(not counting port-a-potties), and the trails can be confusing. What LSLP *does* have is nature aplenty, peaceful quiet, and solitude. When I come here, I am able to let go the rest of the world and rest my mind. There is hardly anyone around –mostly people fishing– and no sounds of traffic. This is a blessing and that is why I love coming here. Also, as I mentioned in my first review, I have gone kayaking here three times. Beach access is simple and several different lakes to choose from. My favorite is the lake next to the playground – hardly anyone on the water and lots of little areas to explore. «This principle holds that a reconnection to the natural world is fundamental to human health, well-being, spirit, and survival.» –Richard Louv, «The Nature Principle»

Lone Star Lakes Park is awesome! I spent the day walking the trails around some of the lakes with my son Chris and the dog(Chop). We saw great views of the lakes, people fishing, and walking, great flowers and even a crazy area over run with Kudzu. The weather was perfect and the scenes were fantastic. We also walked along farms that adjoined the park and the fields of lush green were beautiful. I’ve been here a few times but never thought to mention it on Unilocal. If you are in the area and want to visit a quiet and beautiful place this is right up there with the best. Don’t postpone joy — visit Lone Star Lakes soon. I’ve added some photos.

Lone Star Lakes Park is a HUGE, and I mean HUGE Park in Suffolk. By HUGE I mean over 1,000 acres of park and 11 lakes for fresh water fishing. I’m not big on fishing only because I can’t worm, I mean bait my hook and you certainly can’t expect me to unhook the slimy fish. Other than that, fishing is awesome. Lone Star Lakes is not just for those looking for a place to fish. There are picnic areas, trails, boat ramps and an archery field. There really is alot to do. Eventually, I’m planning on taking my bike out there. Be warned that there are bugs galore. That’s to be expected though. Be readily armed with lots o’bug spray.
