Okay, it’s time to get cleaned up! I went in search of Venti’s Elite, but found a cozy little spot called Joe’s Barbershop. Based on the drawn curtains in the storefront window, I did not expect anything chic or even contemporary. Oddly enough, I found some comfort in this. After entering, I was invited to sit in a classic barber’s chair by a youngster, no older than nineteen. Immediately, the answer came before the question, «do you guys take credit cards?»! No. But there was an ATM in the 7 – 11, which was on the next lot. At this point I find that a shave and a haircut is $ 30. I can dig that… No problem. When I get back, I realize that Telemundo is on, and everyone is speaking Spanish. Luis, my barber, asks me in English, how I want it done. I gave him the gist, and my boy went to work. He lined me up, suggested some styling options, and spoke easy with me. I was in the chair for about 45 minutes, and it was relaxing and quite reassuring. I really appreciated the time he took making sure my cut was correct. Heseemed to love what he was doing. About the shop, not the coolest or the greatest, but a welcomed oasis from the pomp and glamour of Ventura Blvd. If you speak Spanish, you’ll love the banter, although there wasn’t too much of it, considering there was not a single man over thirty five in the place. On a final note, background music would have made this a four star review, but I’ll be back to see if they step it up!
