This is a real gem. I live across the street and it went unnoticed for a lot of months. Small, low scale place with absolutely delicious food. Feels just like a home cooked meal. Their idlis are like cotton balls with the coconut chutney. The dosas are great too. Their masala chai with onion pakora on a rainy day is to die for. Lunch buffets are reasonable and quite a decent variety. For the great place this is, they could use better marketing. A must try.

I ordered take out from here and decided I would never go back before I even tasted the food. To say that they have poor costumer services is putting it very nice! I stood in their empty Resturant for ten minutes without anyone ever acknowledging my presence. The man that brought me the food was rude and made me feel like I was bothering him just by being there! I ordered vegetable samosas, palak paneer, and a garlic nan. The samosas were ok. The pastry was not over fried or too hard, and the blend of spices inside were very tasty. So I was shocked when I opened the Palak Paneer and saw what looked like soup with lots of oil in it. Despite the looks I remained optimistic and tried it. It was terrible. It was so oily and lacked any flavor! Indian food without flavor! Even the nan was not good. It was undercooked and tasted like some of the dough was still raw! It was so bad that I had two bites and threw it all away. I would never order anything from here again!

This is one of the top disappointment for me. This place is haunted. There was not a single server when i went in. The food was way to below average. I dont wanna say much, bottomline is i would never ever recommend anyone to go out here. I ordered upma, rava dosa and masala tea.

This has got to be the worst restaurant review I will ever write. Dear fellow human beings, for the good of your own health, and your tongue and palette, please do not go here. If I could give a negative five rating, I would. Here’s why: The food was the most horrible food. It doesn’t qualify to be called food. I cooked better food when I was 10 years old, and I am not saying this to be spiteful or exaggerate. We ordered Idli, rasam, chicken curry and fish curry. Idli’s looked ridiculously small. The rasam was alright. The fish curry was cold. It was tilapia in a very bad tasting curry. Someone would have to try hard to make food taste so bad. I dont understand how anyone could make a curry so horrible. I learnt something new that such bad food can be possible. It was full of garam masala– only garam masala. It was as if they had boiled garam masala, and fish and frozen onion and ginger garlic paste in the most artless way. The chicken curry, oh where do I start. The chicken had gone bad. Yes. You read that right. Stale chicken. It was the same gross gravy that was used in the fish curry. And there was one extra thing in the chicken curry. Raw uncooked green chilies. They were cut to look like beans. I am Indian and have had some real spicy food and even enjoy it. This raw green chilly was raw hot– if you know what I mean. That is the biggest blunder in Indian cooking. Nobody does that to food! I ate it thinking it was beans. It looked raw and was cut like beans. I felt fire in my mouth and throat. My eyes and nose were watering. I was in tears. My husband went to the manager and told her we needed a lassi, because his wife ate a chilly. The manager said ok. I sat there dying and crying in pain and burning in hell fire. No signs of lassi. After 5 mins, my husband walked up to her again and requested that was urgent and we needed the lassi because i was in pain. She said ok. We heard the blender run after 5 mins. I ran out of the restaurant and stuck my tongue out in the cold November air to cool my tongue and my mouth. The lassi came in after 10 – 15 mins, even though I was in visible pain. My insides were burned for until two days . We called the manager and told her the chicken was bad. She said ‘Ok, I’ll give you boxes to pack .’ I dont know if she didnt understand, or she chose to ignore what we said. We were not the only ones to compain of stale bad food. The guys who were sitting at the table behind us had a similar complaint. The conversation went this way: Guy at the other table to the manager: The coconut chutney has gone bad. Manager: No it is not bad. Guy: How can you say it is not bad. Im telling you it is stale. You should taste it. Manager: Ok. ok.(Walks away) The quantities are ridiculously small. The rice they serve is cold and laughably less quantity. Their prices are in the range of the more expensive restaurants and their food quality and quantity are both mockingly ridiculous. I wouldn’t complaint about the quantity though, given the quality of their food. They dont even have paper napkins! They tear out kitchen paper towels from a roll near the manager’s desk when you ask for napkins. I was appalled at the cheapness of this restaurant. They should be ashamed of themselves for attempting a restaurant business. The customers who have given them good ratings, must have gotten lucky, or may be the restaurant had better days earlier. I do not know. From what I saw and experienced last week, I can only hope they close this business and do something else other than cooking. If I may add, the name Arya Bhavan itself is a copy of a very well known restaurant in India. I could see how they had attempted to make the recipe booklet like that of Arya Bhavan. We walked in thinking it was an actual Arya bhavan establishment. Had the food been half as good, I wouldn’t bring up this point. Very sleazy if anything.

My Rating: ZERO. Had been here a couple of months back with a friend for weekend buffet… we were late, and close to closing, and so we checked with the ‘manager’ to see if there will be food available, n he said sure, come in. But whn we got in n took the plates n ‘scraped’ the first serving, he said sorry, no more food, Moreover, even though the restaurant was empty the manager insisted we sit on a really small 2 seat table…, and his reason was that if we sit in a 4 seat table, it wld be more work to clean the table. Me n my buddy got so angry, but didnt have login to Unilocal a post a review… Worst service in the US known to me Cold food… Dont go even if they hand food for free…

Being that half my family loves south indian food and a few of us love north indian, we decided to try this place since they had both. The south indian rice dishes tasted good and were a good portion size. The north indian dishes, however, were subpar! My sister and I are HUGE paneer fans so we decided to order the mattar paneer. That was the first time I have never finished an entire paneer dish/curry. This mattar paneer was ONLYMATTAR(Peas) with very few pieces of paneer! They put way too many peas, which were not cooked properly! In summary, the south indian rice dishes here were good, but north indian food was not.

South Indian items were good. We went around 2pm and most of the items were cold. I gave 3 stars because of the bad attitude of the server.

I came here for the lunch buffet and it was definitely worth it($ 8 – 9 I think, that’s it!). Also, the owner came by with some additional free food, which was delicious. Huge fan since everything is already vegetarian and there are plenty of options for a great price. Downfall? One day I showed up again and they were oddly closed at lunch time. Sad face. Cannot wait to return.

After putting it off for what seems to be years(how long has this place been open?!?), we finally decided to give it a shot. I’m not the hugest fan of South Indian food because I am quite the carnivore and South Indian food is largely vegetarian, but this place is good. I only tried the dosa, which is a thin savory crêpe-like meal, with seasoned potatoes inside and chutney on the side. We tried the garlic dosa, butter masala dosa, masala dosa, paper dosa, and mysore masala dosa. All were good(the garlic dosa was a little intense tho– basically chopped garlic underneath the potatoes– not good news for those who have to go back to work after lunch!) But everything was quite tasty! The food itself is filling but not heavy like lots of other indian food– so while satisfied, you don’t feel the need to take a 3-hour siesta just to be able to move again. Place itself isn’t huge and has a bit of a smell to it– not a bad smell, but that oily smell that clings to your clothes. But overall– yum! Will be back!

We ate here about a week ago and enjoyed the food very much. Love that it’s all vegetarian(appeals to me). The food is not highly spiced so you can ask for medium and not be afraid it will be too hot. We liked everything we ordered. The owner needs to warm up the room a bit with something on the walls and in the evening, to turn down the lights a bit — it was REALLY bright in there so ambiance is not the strong suit but the food is yummy and we’ll be back!

Good South Indian style lunches buffet on weekends. The buffet is limited. The dishes will be familiar but different from North Indian cuisine.

I went to Aryan Bhavan on a Saturday for the buffet since I saw the sign when passing. I was alone and wanted to try something new, and being a vegetarian, I thought that this would be a great choice. I am a huge fan of Indian food, and have been to several restaurants and have a lot to compare it to. That day I arrived at around 2:00PM, so I figured that the food was sitting a bit, so my expectations weren’t very high. The restaurant was completely empty besides the 2 employees, and in the time that I ate, one other customer came in. I thought the food was alright; yes, alright. Every item at the buffet was cold, with the exception of the soup, which was not part of the buffet. I am very forgiving so I went back on the following Tuesday with a colleague of mine. We frequent an Indian restaurant in Hackensack; on an off note, look for Tandoori Chef on Main Street in Hackensack, it’s far superior. I was actually embarrassed bringing my friend there. Not embarrassed of my friend, but embarrassed that I recommended a place that was so awful. Every item was cold, dry, and had ZERO flavor. My friend also tried the soup. I asked him how it was and his response was, «at least it’s warm.» This place does not compare to Tandoori Chef’s worst day. I am not sure who is writing these reviews for this place; it must be the family members of the restaurant owners in India. This was literally the second worst restaurant I have ever visited in my life, and I used to be fat and eat out all the time.

Went for lunch buffet on a Sunday. Food was not aggressively seasoned, love the clean taste, pretty impressive variety(appetizers — pakoras & bhaji, soup — mulligatawny, main dishes, desserts — gulab jamun & kheer, accompaniments — sambar for dosa, papadum, chutneys, raita, pickles, deep fried bread). Buffet lunch included Dosa. It was worth the $ 9.99 price tag($ 7.99 weekdays). Planning to order from the a la carte take-out menu on next visit.

A brand new place on the main road through Teaneck. Totally vegetarian, too… which was a big draw for us. We had a fried potato appetizer, which was light, crisp… yet soft on the inside. Full of coriander and mustard seed flavors. Excellent. The tamarind rice was stunning, loaded with curry leaves, onion, scallion, and an interesting blend of eastern spices. Definitely our favorite dish of the night. We also had these little fried dumplings(fritters) in a light creamy sauce with black mustard seed, garlic, and cilantro. A good accompaniment to the other items we ordered. The onion parata bread was good, too, albeit different than others we had in that it was like the onion was baked into the bread, and not stuffed into the center. Whatever the case… it was still great. Service was attentive, and the cooks even asked how the food was. A big thumbs up here!

Nice selection of veg dishes that are very affordable(dosas start at $ 5, which is the cheapest I’ve seen around). The Sunday buffet featured pakoras, fried potato patties, yogurt thingy(sorry, not sure of all the names), 6 various veg dishes — two with paneer, and two desserts(rice pudding and gulab jaman). Soups were also available. Small, but spacious dining area and great waitstaff. Paid $ 10 for buffet. I will try the menu items next time. I recommend this place.

This restaurant is fantastic. They serve delicious vegetarian South Indian food, affordable, and so charming! Their weekday buffet is $ 7.99 and on weekends I think it goes up to $ 8.99. The chef(doubling as a waiter) told us about how he used to work in the Bombay Hotel in Mumbai and that he catered an event for President Clinton at Madison Square Garden — he’s friendly and clearly knows what he’s doing in the kitchen. Speaking as someone who lived in India for four months and an avid fan of Indian food, you cannot go wrong at Arya Bhavan. The buffet options were great and varied — paneer makhani, cooked cabbage, lentil soup, a wonderful black bean dish, soft naan, and all the fix-ins. Their mango lassi is to die for. A wonderful addition to Teaneck’s Cedar Lane!
