Ok, I hate to give a lower than usual review because of lack of porta potties. But, when you’re in line to use one before the race and they are announcing that it’s time to line up that is NOT cool. It looks like they brought it a total of two extra. Um. No. That is NOT enough for this size of race. Other than the porta potties(or lack thereof) the race was great! You could sign up through , by calling the Chamber, or by sending in a check. If you live in Texas City, you probably could have stopped by the Chamber as well, I bet. I like when they give you a lot of options. The packet pickup was the day before at the Lowery Fitness Center, and they had it open all day, which is nice, especially if you come in from out of town. You can also do it the day of the race, but I like having everything ready the night before and not worrying about it. The cost for the 5k and the 10k is the same, $ 25.00. Which is NOT a bad price at all. I chose the 10k because hey! Why not run 6.2 miles in the June heat? It actually wasn’t bad. Yeah it was hot. Yeah it was humid. But it started at 7:30 so it could have been worse. The 10k route was through the park and then turned down Skyline Drive away from the dike and it was a nice run! Lots of birds and a nice breeze. It did get warm when the sun came out from behind the clouds but they had plenty of water stations. And lots of encouraging volunteers which helps so much when you’re pushing through a tough run! Plus, for whatever reason there were TONS of runners giving everyone high fives and fist bumps… me included! It really makes you feel like you can tough it out when you’re getting support and encouragement from other runners! It was chip times and had the usual after race snacks… Gatorade, water, beer, bananas, cookies, but the best part? Cool wet towels! Man those felt heavenly after a hot run! All in all this is a definite 5-star even IF they would have had more porta potties! Hopefully next year they will and if I run it I can up the stars!
