Quick drive thru the area. This is another spectacular view of Columbia Gorge and the dam.

Yeah, this dam is an engineering feat. Yes, it provides renewable energy. And yes, it can be a visual treat when zooming through the Columbia Gorge. But, this dam and many others, have also had severe negative effects on the local environment, fauna, and peoples who have called the area home. Before the dam, local tribes harvested salmon (their livelihood) from the falls which used to exist here prior to the dam. Nowadays salmon have quite a treacherous undertaking to make it back upriver to their spawning grounds.
At any rate, this dam puts The Dalles on the map, it provides clean energy, and there are fish ladders to sort of help the salmon get up river.
