I went to Artists at Work right before they were scheduled to close and got turned away. I understand they were scheduled to close, but a couple extra minutes wouldn’t have hurt them. Why would any company turn away prospective business!!! Especially around the holiday season! I likely will not return and will tell others about the shops inability to serve and their poor customer service.

This is a neat little store but the art all has a same-ness to it.(It’s all bright colored mexican influence day-of-the-dead happy skulls and whatnot.) What’s in the shop is pretty neat but I was hoping for more variety.

After my first visit to Artists at Work, I was very surprised to see upon coming home and checking for what I expected to be at least several glowing reviews of this shop that it has, instead, somehow managed to fly under the radar of Unilocal reviewers thus far(though there are a few mentions of it elsewhere on the Internet). Maybe it’s the location? Being essentially a very 4th Ave. kind of place that’s(obviously) not on 4th Ave., that is. It’s a wonderful amalgam of the works of 16 different artists, including scads of one of my new favorite things, Hamsas(a.k.a. Hand of Fatima, or Mary or Miriam), that are made by the owner, who’s a really friendly, entertaining, informative fellow. They’re in practically every media you could think of, including tile, painting, metal, ceramic, and stained glass, which is what first caught my eye and forced my unplanned detour into the store, the lovely iridescent stained glass Hamsas hanging in the window. There’s also a lot of jewelry, pottery, Southwestern standard and not-so-standard fare, including Dia de los Muertos Catrinas, etc., and so much more that I didn’t get a chance to check out very well due to time constraints and hopefully will get to hear more about from other Unilocalers in the future before I return there myself. With prices that easily fit my pecuniary limits($ 5 stained glass hummingbirds or dragonflies, for example) to high-end goods in the hundreds of dollars range, there’s something for everyone here. I’ll definitely be going back in the future, especially for some nice local handmade artisanry for winter holiday gifts for my loved ones.
